Dans la Cité impériale, sous la dynastie Tang, à l’an 746, l’empereur Li donne un
banquet pour célébrer la beauté de Yang, sa concubine favorite. Les invités
présentent leurs hommages à la Belle. Les mets sont servis. L’encens se consume.
Toutefois, deux éléments manquent à la fête : les délicieux letchis commandés pour
satisfaire aux caprices de la concubine… et l’Empereur ! La favorite s’impatiente. Elle
boit. Où est l’Empereur? Il est en compagnie de Sun, la plus jeune des concubines.
Rongée par la jalousie, Yang se comporte alors scandaleusement devant
l’assemblée, en s’imaginant des voluptés infidèles. Aiguisée par les effets de l’alcool,
la douleur qu’elle ressent poussera son cœur d’amante blessée à basculer de la
douceur à l’amertume, la conduisant même à de bien âpres extrémités. Flirtant
sensuellement avec l’érotisme, le film d’animation Le banquet de la concubine, de
la jeune cinéaste chinoise Hefang Wei, aborde l’une des histoires d’amour les plus
célèbres de la Chine impériale. Dans ce récit, la jalousie est amère. Rien n’adoucit
le palais d’une amante délaissée, pas même le letchi tant aimé!
In the Imperial City in the year 746, during the Tang Dynasty, Emperor Li gives a
banquet in honour of his favourite concubine, Yang. The guests pay their respects to
the great beauty. A magnificent feast is served. The incense burns down, but the
celebration is still missing two essential elements: the delicious lychees which the
concubine craves and the Emperor himself. As Yang’s impatience grows, she drinks
more and more. Where can he be? With Sun, the latest concubine! Imagining their
sensuous intertwining, Yang is consumed with jealousy and behaves scandalously
before the assembled dignitaries. Her frustrated desire and the pain she feels at
the Emperor’s infidelity harden her heart. She is unappeasable. But it is another
who will taste the unjust deserts. Delicately flirting with eroticism, the animated film
The Banquet of the Concubine, by young Chinese director Hefang Wei, recounts
one of the most famous love stories of Imperial China. In this tale of bitter jealousy,
nothing can sweeten the heart of an abandoned mistress, not even the luscious
lychee.
À PROPOS DE LA RÉALISATRICE
ABOUT THE FILMMAKER
D’abord diplômée de l’École des beaux-arts du Sichuan, en 2001, la jeune cinéaste
d’origine chinoise, Hefang Wei, effectue ses premières expériences en cinéma à
Beijing. Désirant poursuivre sa formation cinématographique, elle s’inscrit alors à
l’école de réalisation de film d’animation La Poudrière, située à Valence, en France.
Elle y réalise trois films courts, soit Chant de klaxons (2009), À moi (2010), Prix du
jury Canal J, Espoirs de l'animation, Annecy 2010, et Chroniques du pont (2010),
son film de fin d’études, un court métrage qui a reçu plusieurs prix, notamment le
Prix du meilleur film d'animation francophone SACD, au Festival international du
court métrage à Clermont-Ferrand en 2011. Parallèlement à la réalisation,
Hefang Wei pratique également diverses activités reliées au cinéma d’animation :
élaboration de scénarimages, animation, décoration, mise en images et composition. Pour son tout dernier film, Le banquet de la concubine (2012) – produit par
Folimage, Foliascope et l’Office national du film du Canada –, elle s’inspire de la
calligraphie et de la peinture chinoise traditionnelle, un univers iconographique
qu’elle connaît bien.
After graduating from the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 2001,
young Chinese filmmaker Hefang Wei began working in
animation in Beijing. Wishing to continue her studies in film
directing, she enrolled at La Poudrière, the renowned
animation film school in Valence, France, where she made
three short films: Song of Horns (2009), It’s Mine (2010),
winner of the Canal J Jury Prize (Espoirs de l’animation)
at Annecy in 2010, and her graduating film, The Bridge
Chronicles (2010), which garnered numerous honours, including the SACD award
for best francophone animated film at the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film
Festival in 2011. In addition to directing animated films, Wei also does various
related jobs, such as storyboarding, animation, sets, camera and compositing. Her
latest film, The Banquet of the Concubine (2012), co-produced by Folimage,
Foliascope and the National Film Board of Canada, is inspired by traditional Chinese
painting and calligraphy, an iconographic world with which she is very familiar.
