Benouarka P4 P5 THE WORK L ‘OEUVRE The El Nour Wal Amal Association (Light and Hope), a non profit organization, was founded in 1954 by late Istiklal Radi with the aim to create an environment where young visually impaired girls could develop their potential. To date, it has provided free education and vocational training to more than 300 visually impaired women. The Music Institute was established in 1961 by the former Dean of the Conservatory of Cairo. It numbers 70 students including the 41 musicians of the symphonic orchestra with all 4 sections: strings, woodwind, brass and percussions. Special techniques and methods have been developed to enable these girls to perform without the need to read the notes and without the dependance on the "batin" of a conductor. The orchestra has traveled around the world, visiting over 20 countries (Jordan 89,Koweit 90, Japan 94, EAU 95 and 2007... East Europe 2011, Germany 2013) presenting works from the classical Oriental and Occidental repertoire. P6 P7 THE LIBRETTO LE LIVRET The artist offers a sensitive and poetic interpretation on the theme of the exploration of consciousness and memory. The legend of the Heart Tree evokes a world that everyone carries in themselves, different for each of us, and finds its meaning in sharing and harmony. The story is a tale in which two stars and heavenly soulmates, Nour and Amal, will first discover, then lose one other, only to be finally reunited... And in the ballet of their two beings and their gently woven feelings, emerges the idea that everyone needs someone else to exist... The narrative becomes the vehicle for a philosophical quest, an internal reflection, with -- at the heart of the story -- the Heart Tree, a Tree of Knowledge that symbolizes the road to wisdom. P8 P9 THE STORY L’HISTOIRE At the confines of space is an area of peace surrounded only by emptiness, a valley suspended in a deep cosmos that the ancients called Far. There, solitary and majestic, a tree of unknown essence grows, the Heart Tree, with powers and virtues so great that nature chose to hide them. In front of this mysterious world, time, incarnated in the body of a wind, is waiting bent and wailing, held captive as in the sails of a ship, by immense forces until the Heart Tree consented to bear fruit... A heart-shaped fruit... as rare as life. A heart, sensitive and beating, that could be taken by whoever could reach it... So, freed, the big wheel resumed its mad rush, taking everything in its wake, within the time of a season, before the fruit falls or is picked and that immutable cycle ends in absolute immobility. The Heart Tree was the keeper of the shrine where no being, no force could enter except in dream, because it was an imaginary world. And that day, announced by the birth of a strange light, came… Nour, arriving hesitant and confused, approaches the tree, attracted by that supernatural and mesmerising heart. But, at the moment he is about to seize it, Amal appears, just as lost and fearful, pleading to share the treasure. She and he came from far away, survivors of a world of stars once glorious and bright, but now extinct. The Tree, and it was the only time he did, consented. The Heart separated into two parts so that each of them could exist. At that moment, before all the muses of creation, the two stars gave back their eternity, and their outlook on the world would change forever… They wanted to live, to be, to exist! ... Just for the time of a dream... To taste, even for a few days and nights, all the beautiful and essential feelings associated with the beginning and end of things: The Emotions of Life… P 10 P 11 THE SCORE LA PARTITION The score brings together opera singing in Arabic and symphonic music with romantic and Orientalist accents. The orchestration highlights each instrument on a journey through tonality and melody that intertwines... P 12 P 13 THE AUTHOR L’AUTEUR Franco-Algerian artist, Tarik Benouarka, is a multi instrumentalist, pianist and player of the Arab lute. Indeed the action often moves forward during narration and sung scenes can not be dramatised. Echoing the miscegenation of the music, I divide the characters so that they are embodied by both singers and dancers. Fantasy, including that of the Tree Heart, will unfold through scalable video graphics projected on a large net curtain, representing a passage between the worlds. Thus, orchestra, singers, dancers, narrator, video, staging and lighting are invited on stage to tell this eternal story. In a commitment and desire to transmit and share, Tarik Benouarka and his producer accompany their creations with an introduction and education to music and the creative world.
