De Gaulle: A Quiet Holiday presents original photographs
from the Kennelly Archive of De Gaulle’s visit to Ireland after
he left power in May 1969. Portraits of the McCartans, De
Gaulle’s Irish ancestors, will also be exhibited.
Padraig and Joan Kennelly, founders of a small photo-graphic
studio in Tralee, followed the trail of this noted visitor and
recorded the excitement caused amongst the inhabitants of
Sneem, County Kerry. They called their collection “A Quiet
Holiday”.
The exhibition is presented by the French Embassy in Ireland
in association with the Irish Presidency of the Council of the
EU and The Gathering Ireland 2013. The original exhibition was
conceived by Isabelle Galy-Aché and presented by the Irish
Cultural Centre in Paris in 2011, with the support of the
Kennelly Archive, Fondation Charles de Gaulle, Ireland Fund of
France.
De Gaulle: A Quiet Holiday will be officially opened by Lucinda
Creighton T.D., Minister of State for European Affairs, Barbara
Nolan, Head of the European Commission Representation in
Ireland, Emmanuelle d’Achon, Ambassador of France to
Ireland, Jacques Godfrain, President of the Fondation Charles
de Gaulle, Paddy McCartan, Dublin City Councillor and Isabelle
Galy-Aché, Curator.

"KALEIDOSCOPE: CONTEMPORARY ART FROM EU MEMBER STATES"
1 MAY - 30 JUNE 2013
Kaleidoscope: Contemporary Art from EU Member States is an
exhibition of a selection of contemporary art works from the 27 Member
States of the European Union. This exhibition has been organised by the
Department of Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht and the Office of Public Works in
collaboration with the Embassies and various cultural organisations throughout
Europe. The exhibition forms part of Culture Connects, Ireland’s 2013 EU
Presidency Cultural Programme.
France is represented by Pierre Soulages, one of France’s greatest living artists
and a major international figure in post-war abstract painting. Brou de Noix sur
Papier 1998 13, the work shown at the exhibition, represents his continued use of
walnut stain throughout his career to create powerful abstract works.

AT THE
2013 GUITAR FESTIVAL OF IRELAND

French interpreter, composer, arranger and improviser, Roland Dyens was
recognized in 1985 as one of the “100 Best Living Guitarists” in all styles by the
French magazine “Guitarist”. In 2007 he was honoured by the Guitar Foundation of
America (GFA), which chose him to compose the set piece for its prestigious annual
competition, held in Los Angeles.
To celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Guitar Festival of Ireland, Roland Dyens
along with GuitaRIAM, the Royal Irish Academy of Music guitar ensemble, will
perform his new commissioned work for the occasion.

THE LARTIGUE MONORAIL & MUSEUM

Located in Listowel, County Kerry, the Lartigue Monorail & Museum offers
visitors of all ages the opportunity to experience a unique form of rail travel.
The original steam-powered monorail was designed by Frenchman Charles
Lartigue and ran for 9 miles between Listowel and the seaside resort of
Ballybunion. Operating from 1888 to 1924, it carried passengers, livestock and
freight along a rail supported on A-shaped trestles. It occupies a special place in
railway history as the only monorail of its type to operate successfully on a
commercial basis.
On Saturday May 4th, French Ambassador to Ireland, Emmanuelle d’Achon,
will officially open the Lartigue Monorail & Museum.

HAYDN: THE SIX "PARIS" SYMPHONIES

Haydn composed six great works for the French capital that represent one of the
pinnacles of the late-eighteenth-century classical symphony. Known collectively as the
Paris symphonies.
One of the Paris symphonies will be performed by The Orchestra of St Cecilia as the
concluding work in each of the concerts in this, the third of six annual series devoted to
performing all 108 symphonies of Haydn.

GALWAY - EXHIBITION: SCIENCE/FICTION: A JOURNEY IN THE HEART OF LIFE
MAY 2013
The French Embassy in Ireland, in partnership with the Alliance Française
Galway and INSERM, the French National Institute of Health and Medical
Research, is delighted to present the exhibition Science/Fiction: a journey
in the heart of life from April to May 2013.
From living organisms, observed at the microscopic level. And from the
work of France’s most visionary writer, Jules Verne. The panels on
display are a superimposition of scientific photographs from the Inserm
image bank and old engravings illustrating the writings of Jules Verne.
These striking images are the creation of Eric Dehausse, an
iconographer at INSERM.
