low-cost accommodation
2014-2015
Paris, a capital for young people. A reputation which remains strong! 15 to 25-year-olds
have so much to choose from: budget accommodation in youth hostels, staying with a
Parisian host, or doing a free apartment swap; meeting international students and
partying in the capital’s numerous bars and clubs; visiting classic Parisian sites,
benefiting from reduced prices for young people and discovering the capital in unusual
and fun ways; shopping in hip places for urban, trendy or cut-price designer fashion.
Discover Paris off the beaten track at the lowest possible cost! The City of Paris has a
website for young people in the capital with great ideas for things to do and
information on the latest cultural events, etc. And for young students who come to live
in Paris for their studies, the website offers valuable information on finding somewhere
to live and other initiatives for setting up home in the capital.
LOW-COST ACCOMMODATION
Paris tops the list of cheapest cities in terms of low-cost accommodation, ahead of
Rome, London and New York. Young people love it and find all sorts of accommodation
options around the capital, ranging from one- to three-star accommodation, according
to their budget.

> Parisian apartment exchanges
More than 300,000 apartment exchanges take place all over the world every year.
Today, the phenomenon is growing due to the recession and increased access to
information thanks to the Internet. Paris is particularly attractive as it is full of
accommodation offers ranging from studios to mansions, plus suburban houses and
photography studios. Today, according to Trocmaison.com, some 20,000 residents of
the Paris region, mainly Parisians, use apartment exchanges for low-cost holidays.

> Couch surfing: at a Parisian friend’s house
Couch surfing is the ideal way to enjoy a friendly and authentic stay in Paris for very
little cost. The idea is to invite a person or people to stay with you and offer them a
sofa, a bedroom or a place to put up a tent. You could even throw in a coffee or a
meal!

> Youth hostels: friendly and low-cost
The number of youth hostels in Paris has not stopped growing. There are now around 20
of them in the capital, with more than 2,000 beds in total. These facilities aren’t just
for young people and partygoers; they’re also a low-cost and friendly alternative to
other types of accommodation. At less than €25 a night, hostels offer a comfortable
place to stay, in a private bedroom or dormitory with or without en suite bathrooms,
and several services such as Internet, laundry service, breakfast, etc. New youth
hostels are becoming trendier and more design and with this a new concept of
‘boutique-hostels’ has been born, with establishments such as The Loft in Belleville.
Large foreign operators build hostels with a high capacity and focus on creating
somewhere with a festive atmosphere, much like the two addresses from the operator
St Christopher’s Inn, which offer, as well as accommodation, their Belushi’s bars and
restaurants and a night club. There is also the group Generator whose first address in
Paris will soon offer 1,000 beds as well as a club on the banks of the Canal Saint-Martin.
The Halle Pajol, a project backed by the Paris City Council, opened in 2013. Located a
few steps from Gare du Nord and Canal de l’Ourcq, this 330-bed hostel is a renovated
SNCF railway building. The eco-friendly building is created from wood, concrete, and
glass and produces its own source of energy, as indicated on a sign on the front of the
building which shows in real time the production and consumption of energy. There are
also cultural spaces, a garden, and a cafe.

> Guest rooms and bed & breakfast accommodation: experience the
Paris of Parisians
Staying with a local has become a real trend. The number of guest rooms and furnished
apartments available to rent in Paris is growing thanks to the introduction of labels like
‘Hôtes de qualité’, devised by the Paris City Council, the Paris Convention and Visitors
Bureau and the relevant professionals, ‘Eco-friendly guest rooms’ or the ‘Authentic
B&B’ quality charter created by the FPPCH (federation of Parisian guest house
professionals). An accommodation solution that will get you closer to Parisians.
Examples of this growing trend include Meeting the French and Rue Amandine, which
both offer you the chance to stay with Parisians and benefit from their personalized
advice. Restaurants, nights out, culture, shopping, guided tours and activities, off the
beaten track and in the shoes of a local.

> Unusual restaurants
Several places in the capital provide fun dining experiences in original settings. These
out-of-the-ordinary venues offer an unforgettable meal in the jungle, in a church, by
the sea, on an island, etc. Some themed restaurants immerse diners into a unique
atmosphere for dinner: a decor inspired by the little house on the prairie, the world of
superheroes, a reconstructed train, etc. Others offer a new and fun experience: take
part in a food juggling performance in a Japanese teppanyaki restaurant, drink wine
from a baby’s bottle in a fondue restaurant, put yourself in the shoes of a blind person
and dine in the dark, be seated on a tatami mat on the floor, etc.

> The best of French gastronomy at low prices
Student training restaurants, where apprentices and students can put their training into
practice, enable you to enjoy elaborate, even semi-gastronomic meals, at ridiculously
low prices. These establishments are open to the public, by reservation only, at
lunchtime and sometimes in the evening at specific times during term-time.
Another way to taste great French cuisine without spending a fortune: ‘bistronomic’
tables. This term is a combination of ‘bistro’ and ‘gastronomic’ and refers to
restaurants that combine low prices (menus around €30), a small team, a small venue,
a relaxed atmosphere and inventive cuisine made from simple, tasty products. These
restaurants are often managed by chefs that have been trained in the most well-known
catering schools.

PARTYING AND NIGHTLIFE IN PARIS
> Parisnightlife, the essential website
Parisnightlife.fr is the official guide for nights out in Paris proposed by Paris City
Council. The website, in both English and French, is dedicated entirely to nightlife. It
provides lists of bars, restaurants, clubs, theatres, etc., which are all geo-located,
reviewed and include practical information such as dress codes and events calendars.
The ‘Events’ page gives you access to all Parisian events on a particular date.

> Districts to go out in
There are many places to go out in the capital and Paris’s nightlife is not just limited to
the historical city centre. Without spending several months in Paris, it seems difficult
to take advantage of all Paris has to offer in terms of evening festivities. Fortunately,
Paris is such a cosmopolitan and diverse city that each district has its own public and
specific characteristics.
Fans of student nights and relaxed atmospheres will enjoy the Latin Quarter (SaintMichel/Mouffetard) or the Mabillon/Odéon area. The 8th arrondissement, towards the
Champs-Elysées, attracts fans of select clubs and VIP nights, while rock, underground
and dance bars are numerous in the 11th arrondissement between Bastille, République,
and Oberkampf. The South of Pigalle (‘SoPi’) in the 9th arrondissement, surrounding
rue du Faubourg Saint-Denis (10th) and the Haut-Marais next to rue de Bretagne and
rue des Filles du Calvaire (3rd), have a record number of new venues. These three
districts, home to many cocktail bars, small clubs, and local bars that have become
very trendy, are frequented by the largest number of hipsters in the capital. The
Marais, towards the Beaubourg and Saint-Paul areas, is a classic choice for gay nights.
The Jaurès-Stalingrad district and the north of the 19th arrondissement are undergoing
a complete revival and extend, along the Canal de l’Ourcq, the bobo surroundings of
the Canal Saint-Martin (10th); the 13th arrondissement near Gare d’Austerlitz is also
changing, particularly with the opening of the Docks - Cite de la Mode et du Design in
2012. This modern, multi-functional venue boasts restaurants, shops, bars, and hype
clubs. The Wanderlust is made up of a terrace on the edge of the Seine, offering a huge
range of activities (yoga, cooking, etc.), an indoor and outdoor restaurant, and a 386m² nightclub. Rooftop nightclub Nüba can also be found here. It offers a large beachlike terrace with deckchairs and a beach hut for the DJ, as well as a programme of
concerts every evening that take place between two electro music sets. Finally, the
Moon Roof boasts an enormous heated terrace where you can smoke a hookah and take
in the panoramic view, see live concerts, shows, and stand-up comedy. This part of the
Seine is also where you will find the boat La Concrète for the only regular all-day party
in Paris, created in 2013, which has revolutionized the Parisian clubbing scene to
become a veritable institution. Based on underground evenings in Berlin, this is a party
that starts at 6am on Sunday and doesn’t stop until 2am on Monday. Held on two
Sundays a month, these events bring together the crème de la crème of electro,
techno, and house DJs in Europe.

> Unusual bars
Paris is full of bars designed for young people. These diverse, out-of-the-ordinary bars
don’t lack enthusiasm or imagination! Return to your childhood at Zéro de conduite,
where you can watch cartoons whilst drinking cocktails from a baby’s bottle. Try out a
cat bar, dive into the realm of geeks at the Dernier bar avant la fin du monde, or
amateur wrestling tournaments at La Lucha libre. Enjoy the Igloo-like atmosphere at
the Hôtel Kube’s Ice Bar or a journey to Japan at the Manga Café. Have a drink at
Footsie, where the prices are aligned with your student grant. Discover the former
USSR at Le Kremlin or a bar hidden behind the cold room of a pizzeria at Moonshiner.
Have a game of ping pong at the brand new Gossima or play on vintage arcade games at
Fantôme. Unusual evenings are on the horizon with Paris’s vast offer of themed bars.

> Electro clubs
Electronic music has its own special venues: Le Social Club has become a reference
point and is known overseas, thanks to the growing renown of French electro. Le
Batofar and Le Showcase programme electro nights and other clubs, such as Le Red
Light have made it their speciality. Some of the most demanding alternative music fans
attend the La Villette Sonique festival, which is held every year at the end of May at
the Parc de la Villette, as well as the electro nights organized at the Grand Palais or
Palais de Tokyo. And, the second edition of the Weather Festival, a marathon of
electronic music lasting 3 days and 3 nights, will take place in Paris and Montreuil
between 6 and 9 June 2014,

> Student and International evenings
Paris attracts young people from all around the world. Numerous venues organize fun
and friendly events which bring them together. First of all, there are multilingual cafes
for practicing a foreign language. Each participant wears a badge showing the
languages they speak and the languages they wish to practice, and discussions follow!
For more of a party atmosphere, there are the famous Erasmus club nights that take
place regularly in various venues within the capital. Generally, the big pubs around the
Grands Boulevards and the bars in the Saint-Michel/Mouffetard district are frequented
by students, especially international students. In some establishments like the four
Hideout pubs, various entertainment is provided throughout the week (quizzes, blindtests, tournaments, dance evenings, themed nights, etc.) providing plenty of
opportunities to meet new people.

> Dance bars
Those who aren’t crazy about night clubs or who are on a tight budget will undoubtedly
love the capital’s bars which transform into improvised dance floors with a joyful
atmosphere after a certain time. The tables and chairs are pushed aside and people
begin to dance when the DJ arrives, normally in the second half of the evening.

> Unusual evenings
Looking for evenings with a difference? Do you want something new and surprising? The
spotlight is on the most original evenings of the moment!
The new types of Paris nightlife take night owls out to party in the most unusual venues
offering the most unusual activities. During evenings ‘on ice’ at the Espace Pailleron,
held once a month in the winter, party animals skate to the rhythm of edgy DJ sets.
An increasing number of concepts are now available to meet new people and have fun
at the same time. Reflex et vous organizes late-night photography classes for singles in
groups of 15, finishing with drinks in a bar. Dating site Meetic organizes evenings in
different venues in Paris for those who want to go beyond the virtual world. Fans of
underground events and original nights out look out for evenings modelled on those of
European cities such as London and Berlin. Such events are organized by groups like
‘Sonotown’, ‘Die Nacht’, ‘Spirit of star’, ‘Weather’, ‘Bon Esprit’, ‘Institut Bonheur’, or
‘We are the oracle’, who produce ephemeral events to suit their artistic tastes in
atypical venues that they have uncovered (disused printing house at Asnières, Etoiles
Lilas cinema terrace, a bunker, chateau, empty swimming pool, garden, artists’ squat,
etc.).
With the huge success of La Concrète (an evening on a barge starting at 6am on Sunday
and finishing at 2am on Monday), other concepts have confirmed this passion for parties
that start during the day and continue into the night. On sunny days, different groups
offer brunches and fun afternoons outdoors in several Parisian Addresses. La Villette
enchantée invites Parisians to come and relax on a chaise longue or on their lawn with
a cocktail and some tapas to the sound of ‘chilled’ electro-lounge DJ sets played at the
end of the afternoon. In summer, La Bellevilloise offers a whole host of activities on
Sundays (massage, ‘vide-dressing’ [buying and selling your second-hand clothes], yoga,
etc.) in a room with the decor of a meadow. Live music sets are also performed
throughout the afternoon. In the heart of the Buttes Chaumont, during the summer,
trendy Parisians come to the Pavillon du Lac to clink glasses and network at Le
Friendly events held on Sunday afternoon, accompanied by live music and DJ sets. At
the bucolic Chalet des Îles restaurant in the Bois de Boulogne, the group The Island
offers copious brunches and entertainment for children. In the afternoon and evening,
live music and clubbing are programmed. Evenings by Diablo bring together fans of
electro music on a trendy barge near the Eiffel Tower.
Partying at a hotel is another new trend. With its huge lobby consisting of several bars,
restaurants and live stages, the Mama Shelter is undoubtedly the Parisian pioneer in
this field. In February 2012 it was joined by the Hôtel W Paris-Opéra, an American
establishment which brings the energy of New York to the Opéra district, as well as the
very arty Jules et Jim in the Marais district. At the Streets Hotel, musicians and singers
are invited to perform on certain week nights, while the Kube and Pershing Hall invite
DJs to play in their design bars. ‘Suite n° 7’, a series of private concerts in palaces, is a
confidential event which has taken place in Paris and in the French provinces every
month since September 2012.
Buses transformed into mobile nightclubs are the latest trend among Parisian
partygoers! On board there is a DJ on the decks, strobe lighting, multicoloured
spotlights and disco decor as well as optional drinks and appetizers. The bus travels
through the streets of the capital, stopping occasionally at some of Paris’s most
beautiful landmarks.

> Night transport
Getting around Paris late at night, enjoying being in one place then another, and
getting back to your hotel or home is now easy thanks to the city’s new improved
network of night buses. They pick up where the metro and daytime buses leave off.
The Parisian metro service now runs until 1.15am Sunday to Thursday and until 2.15am
(arrival of the last train at the terminus) on Friday, Saturday and on the eve of public
holidays. Service resumes at 5.30am (departure of the first train from the end of the
line). Other options for complete freedom include the Vélib’, the self-service bicycle
hire network available 24/7 and the more recent Autolib’, a self-service electric car
hire available 24/7. For a comfortable journey without the hassle of finding a taxi, you
can now use numerous applications on your Smartphone to reserve a passenger vehicle
with a driver.

> Art deco and the Musée du Louvre
At the Musée des Arts décoratifs, during the ‘Vivez Lézards!’ (Long live the arts)
evenings for 18-25 year olds, participants are welcomed by speakers and Art History
Masters students who accompany you on your visit and help you discover the
exhibitions. A similar initiative can be seen at the Musée du Louvre where on certain
days, students from the École du Louvre, the Université Paris I, the Conservatoire
national de danse et de musique, as well as the American University of Paris talk to
visitors in front of works linked to their field of study. The under 30 age group
represents almost half of the museum’s annual visitors and are well-looked after.
Holders of the Louvre Jeunes card also benefit from free access with a guest on
Wednesday and Friday evenings.

> Urban culture and trendy bookshops
Paris’s reputation as a graphic and urban city is also recognized among young people.
Urban culture enthusiasts are found in its mix of places. Artazart, a fluorescent orange
building on the edge of the Saint-Martin canal, is full of urban themed books and
organizes exhibitions. The gallery-shop Artoyz offers urban figurines and designer toys,
as well as books, clothes, wall decorations and accessories with graphic designs
influenced by urban culture, illustration and contemporary art. The bookshops found in
contemporary art museums also offer a great selection of works of art and illustrations
as well as magazines on fashion and graphics.

> Vibrant Paris, contemporary Paris
The French capital is becoming ever more trendy and contemporary, a leader on all
fronts. As for culture, contemporary art institutions such as the Pompidou Centre and
the Musée d’art moderne de la Ville de Paris stand alongside ultra dynamic art centres
like the Palais de Tokyo and the Plateau, or private establishments like the Maison
Rouge and the Fondation Cartier which are changing the Paris art scene. The
CENTQUATRE, which opened in 2008 on the former site of the Paris municipal funeral
service, is a shrine to current artistic creation. This establishment, managed by the City
of Paris, has a surface area of 39,000 m² split into different areas and aims to facilitate
exchanges between visitors and the numerous multitalented artists. All art forms have
a permanent place here in artists’ residences and during festivals. The CENTQUATRE
houses businesses, a cafe and a restaurant and parties are regularly organized here.
Several centres specialized in digital culture have recently opened in the capital. The
studio 13/16 at the Pompidou Centre opened in 2010 and was designed to be a big
workshop equipped with Ovni chairs with integrated audio and video. Everything has
been done in order to offer young people aged 13 to 16 a ‘connected’ experience. They
can connect their iPods to the multimedia docking station and participate in
interactive, futuristic activities with artists who come to liven up this new type of
laboratory. In 2011, the City of Paris created La Gaîté Lyrique. It is a cultural centre
dedicated to digital arts and current music, offering residential spaces, exhibition halls,
a show room, a media library and a media theatre.
Since the end of 2013, Les Docks – Cité de la Mode et du Design has been home to Art
Ludique – Le Musée, the first museum in the world dedicated to contemporary art
inspired by entertainment. Eventually, it will host huge temporary exhibitions all year
round as well as a chronological display that starts with the most influential figurative
artists of the 19th century, followed by the first ever creators of comic books, and
finishing with contemporary artists from around the world working in comics, manga,
cinema, animation and video games.

> Fun events
Every year on the 3rd weekend in September, European Heritage Days present an
opportunity to visit numerous sites which are usually closed to the public. As well as
masterpieces of civil and religious architecture, industrial and agricultural activity,
parks, gardens, archaeological sites, furniture and literary, fluvial and military heritage
are also honoured.
Paris is the city that created the La Nuit Blanche (Sleepless Night) event, which has
since spread to Rome, Amsterdam and Toronto. For an entire night, on the first
Saturday of October, works of art, screenings and installations by contemporary artists
take place throughout the city. Some are installed in the open air and others allow the
public to discover particular venues open especially for the event (Église SaintEustache, Monnaie de Paris, etc.). The festivities last from 7pm to 7am and various
trails are organized by theme or by area. Another similar event takes place in May
every year: La Nuit des Musées (Museum Night). The city’s museums stay open all night,
free of charge, offering culture lovers the unusual experience of visiting the Musée de
la Chasse at 1am in the morning, or the Cité de l’Architecture by torchlight! Music is
celebrated on the 21 June every year when groups and orchestras take to the streets
until the early hours of the morning. Certain areas are pedestrianized and bars open
their doors to musicians ... Over the years, this event has become a veritable festive
institution, with the young and the young-at-heart strolling streets filled with music,
which often continues throughout the night.
In spring and autumn, the popular artists’ open days are held. Several groups and
associations of plastic artists, painters, sculptors and photographers offer everyone the
chance to see an artist at work, surrounded by their works, while at the same time
discovering a Parisian district.
Each year, from July to mid-August, the Seine riverbanks on the Right Bank as well as
other sites (La Villette, etc.) are transformed for the ‘Paris Plages’ (‘Paris Beaches’)
event. Paris also hosts several big music festivals and events such as Solidays (June),
Festival Fnac Live (July), the Fête de l’Humanité, the Techno Parade (September),
Rock en Seine (August), and the Pitchfork Musical Festival (October-November). Every
year in June, the LGBT community organize a huge festive parade to celebrate their
sexual freedom.

> Shows at affordable prices
To take advantage of shows (concerts, theatre, dance, etc.), there are many places
where you can buy affordable tickets. Theatre kiosks sell same day theatre tickets for
half price. A top tip: the three Parisian kiosks (Montparnasse, Ternes and Madeleine)
offer a wide choice of shows with at least four seats in the most popular theatres. Stop
by during the week to avoid queues.
Supported by the Paris City Council, the Théâtre Parisiens Associés, which includes
some 50 theatres throughout Paris, offers theatre tickets for young people. These can
be bought either by phone or directly at the theatre box office. These discounted
tickets are available for performances on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, but
some theatres also offer them on other days: telephone for more information.
For a free concert, go along to a live recording session for one of Radio France’s radio
shows, ‘Un Mardi Idéal’. Every Tuesday at 7.30pm, musicians from all walks of life come
together to perform live. Invitations can be collected from the box office in the Radio
France lobby 1 hour before the show.
Last minute tickets: The Comédie-Française offers tickets at their box office from €6
for under 28 year olds one hour before each performance in the Salle Richelieu. These
tickets for under 28 year olds are free on the first Monday of every month. The Opéra
Bastille also offer cheap last minute tickets. You must arrive 1hr30 before the start of
each performance and collect your ticket from the automatic ticket machine.

> Visit Paris in a different way
To discover the most secret areas of Paris just follow your guide!
Many types of agencies organize original tours in Paris, and each package is completely
unique. Visit Paris by Trikke, a 100% environmentally friendly mix between a scooter,
skis and a skateboard, by tuk-tuk or by Vespa. You can also take part in a cinema trail
in the footsteps of Amélie Poulain or The Da Vinci Code.
Are you familiar with the hidden side of Paris? The Catacombes, the Musée des Egouts
de Paris, the Père-Lachaise and Montmartre cemeteries represent the capital’s
memories and deserve more than just a passing visit. Paris is also full of underground
surprises, between abandoned ghost stations and old signposts. The Mysteries of Paris
agency offer a tour following the trail of ghosts, serial killers and various other
personalities as well as an opportunity to relive the darkest hours of history at
legendary sites like the Catacombes and the Musée du Louvre. Le Manoir de Paris,
which opened in 2010 in the 10th arrondissement, brings 13 Parisian legends to life in
an impressive haunted house with actors. Sensitive souls beware!
Several associations also offer international visitors the chance to discover Paris off the
beaten track by enabling them to experience life as a local. At Café-Info for example,
Parisians that are passionate about their city welcome visitors looking for information.
These locals accompany small groups within their district to share the district’s secrets
and show them some of the most confidential Addresses. The members of Meeting the
French offer host accommodation and guided tours, while the Paris Greeter volunteers
help tourists to discover the true Paris of Parisians, whilst sharing their love and
enthusiasm for the capital.
Another original way to discover Paris and have fun is through games. Qui veut pister
Paris and Démasquez Paris offer the chance to discover Paris and solve enigmas through
different districts in Paris, just life a life-size version of Cluedo!
Finally, to discover Paris in complete freedom, ambling along at your own speed,
there’s nothing quite like a bicycle! Thanks to the Vélib’ system introduced in Paris in
2007, renting a bicycle has never been so simple. Available 24/7, the self-service
system enables you to borrow a bike from one station and return it at another. Stations
can be found in all districts and there’s never more than 300 m between two stations.
Note: Many companies offer guided tours by bicycle in several languages.

TRENDY SHOPPING AND BARGAINS
Poulain)

> Shopping hotspots
There are shopping districts throughout the capital but some areas are reputed for
being hotspots for fashionistas. The range of shops make it possible to find all the items
to round off men’s and women’s ready-to-wear clothing: shoes, watches, jewellery,
bags, books, music, games, cosmetics, accessories, everything is there — including
places for a gourmet break, for a good day’s shopping.
The most touristic districts have a record number of visitors on Saturday, so it’s better
to go in the morning. In some districts, shops are open on Sunday (all day or in the
afternoon): on the Champs-Elysées, at the Carrousel du Louvre (decoration, beauty,
accessories and art shops, the Apple Store, etc.), at Bercy Village (decoration and
health shops), around the rue des Francs-Bourgeois, in the Village Saint-Paul (antiques
and designer shops) and along the canal Saint-Martin.
There are two major sales periods in Paris: in summer (generally end of June /
beginning of July) and in winter (usually at the beginning of January), but there are
also ‘floating’ sales — the dates of these sales are chosen by the shops themselves.
Right Bank
The Haut-Marais (around rue Vieille de Temple, from rue des Francs-Bourgeois up until
République): Young designer fashion shops and more renowned brands (Zadig & Voltaire, Abi

> Young urban fashion
Streetwear, rock, electro, hip hop, hipster, skater and casual... so many trends for a
young urban style. The Citadium concept store combines several of these trends for
men and women, in a place where shopping goes hand in hand with fashion, music and
events. The roads around Les Halles (rue Mandar, rue Tiquetonne, Etienne Marcel, etc.)
also have a large number of general or specialist streetwear shops, including the Royal
Cheese’s 5 shops (with no less than 3 on rue Tiquetonne). As for the hyper creative and
trendy Surface 2 Air and Kistuné, they are firmly established in avant-garde trendy
boutiques, mixing fashion, music, design and lifestyle. The Swedish brand, Cheap
Monday, known for its reasonably priced, high-quality jeans, should soon be opening its
first Parisian boutique in the Marais. For those who love sneakers, the British brand Size
recently established itself in Paris and offers a choice of styles and colours that is
unrivalled in the city. Cufflinks, bow ties, socks, scarves: all the essential items for the
perfect dandy of today can be found at the recently-opened The Nines.

> Cherished Parisian designers
Young Parisian designers are really going places! Well beyond the country’s borders,
the French touch is all the rage, a symbol of style and casual glamour. A trip to Paris is
the opportunity to take home a few pieces created by up-and-coming quintessentially
Parisian designers, to give your life a bit of that sharp bohemian style with a touch of
rock ‘n’ roll. Recently, designer Martin Margiela opened an address dedicated to his
MM6 clothing line, designed to offer more accessible prices and clothes that are easier
to wear every day.

> Big brand clearance stores
Paris is certainly the city of leading luxury brands, but it’s also the city for bargain buys
where you can find affordable designer labels. A large number of brands have clearance
shops offering reduced-price items from previous collections with very large reductions.
Many of these stores are located in the 10th arrondissement, near the Jacques
Bonsergent metro station (in rue Beaurepaire and rue de Marseille). In the suburbs,
there are also many shopping centres specializing in reduced-price designer items, in
particular the outdoor Vallée Village which specializes in luxury brands.

> Very fashionable concept stores
Between chic bazaar and trend lab, the idea of the concept store or multibrand shop
with many types of products is founded on the exclusivity of the product, the gadgets
and designer items, all with a good dose of culture (books, expos, records) and fashion.
Often, they also have places to take a break from shopping and discover culinary
concepts (Colette’s water bar, Merci bookshop café, etc.) Recently, three members of
the webzine De Jeunes Gens Modernes opened their concept store The Broken Arm (a
multibrand shop cum Scandinavian-style coffee shop) in a fine 20th-century building,
opposite the Square du Temple.

> Amazing flagship stores
Like all the big cities and fashion capitals of the world, Paris also has befitting
showcases for brands. The flagship store embodies the brand. Not only can you find
more than you would in other brand shops because of their bigger size, but these shops
are also better equipped with technology. For example, the Adidas Performance Store
makes various equipment available to the public, such as a treadmill that measures
your balance, spring and speed enabling you to find the pair of shoes which are best
adapted to your needs. Repetto enables you to create your own ballerina shoes and
Ralph Lauren has a gourmet restaurant. The more recent Levi’s store features a
workshop where you can customize your jeans. A real shopping experience! Over the
last few years, several major international retailers have appeared in the capital in
huge shops offering shoppers a chance to discover brands previously only available to
globe-trotters (Abercrombie & Fitch, Banana Republic and Marks & Spencer on the
Champs-Elysées and, more recently, American brands Forever 21, with their 4,500 m²
flagship store on rue de Rivoli, and & Other Stories, the latest concept from H&M
which groups ready-to-wear clothing, bags, shoes, jewellery, lingerie, and beauty
products over their 800 m² shop).

> The inimitable flea markets
The world’s biggest market is situated in the north of the capital! At the historic flea
markets at Saint-Ouen/Clignancourt, antiques and second-hand goods dealers are
concentrated in several distinct markets (Biron, Paul-Bert, Serpette, etc.) and on the
edge of the antiques market there are many clothing and novelty businesses. Don’t
forget to negotiate to get a good price. Afterwards, relax over lunch at Ma Cocotte, the
new restaurant by Philippe Starck, designed by the decorator as a giant 1,000 m² bowl
for enjoying mulled wine or hot soup.
For more of a car-boot sale style ambiance, you can also go to the Montreuil or Porte
de Vanves flea markets, two bric-a-brac markets which will please bargain hunters.
With clothes, trinkets, small furniture, spices, books, sports items, tools and much
more, you will find everything you want, be it new or old, at all kinds of prices.
