For me the Edinburgh Festival Fringe says a lot about this city – a world class event
organised in dramatic surroundings, in a very friendly atmosphere, where anybody
from any part of the world with a story to tell can join in, catch an audience and
possibly achieve success. That’s very much what this city is all about.

The Institut français d’Écosse returned to the Fringe in 2011 with Two Johnnies
live upstairs which we were very proud to produce. For our 2012 programme we
have selected 8 shows especially for you. The children’s shows – Lapin wants ice
cream; Adventures of the Litte Prince – add a tasty French flavour to the Fringe kids
programme. For cabaret we picked Jacques Brel: in song and dance and Morceaux
de choix featuring amazing singers, dancers and musicians. Theatre is represented
by three great productions – It’s so nice; Elephant Man and Rock – the latter being an
adaptation into English of our coup de cœur at the Festival d’Avignon in 2010.
As for Ma biche et mon lapin, well we couldn’t imagine doing any Fringe programme
without the puppeteers of Collectif Aïe Aïe Aïe because we just love their work and
so do you according to the tremendous reviews they received last year...
Wishing you a great Edinburgh Festival Fringe. “Vive le Fringe !”
Vincent Guérin, Director of the Institut français d’Écosse
The Cultural Olympiad and London 2012 Festival
The London 2012 Cultural Olympiad is the largest cultural celebration in the history
of the modern Olympic and Paralympic Movements. Spread over four years, it is
designed to give everyone in the UK a chance to be part of London 2012 and inspire
creativity across all forms of culture, especially among young people.
The culmination of the Cultural Olympiad will be the London 2012 Festival, a
spectacular 12-week nationwide celebration bringing together leading artists from
across the world with the very best from the UK, from Midsummers Day on 21 June
and running until the final day of the Paralympic Games on 9 September 2012.
Principal funders of the Cultural Olympiad and London 2012 Festival are Arts
Council England, Legacy Trust UK and the Olympic Lottery Distributor. BP and BT
are Premier Partners of the Cultural Olympiad and the London 2012 Festival.

JACQUES BREL:
IN SONG AND DANCE
Christine Bovill and Heels
Over Head Dance Theatre
Jacques Brel’s songs
have survived the
test of time and have
created a cult following
surrounding his life
and work. From Jarvis
Cocker to David Bowie
via Leonard Cohen,
numerous artists have
endeavoured to keep
his creative spirit
alive. Christine Bovill
and Agathe Girard
(HHDT) bring a fresh,
modern, exciting and
unique interpretation
of Brel’s work through
multimedia, music and
dance. Raw and intense,
poetic and captivating.
Mostly playful, like his
songs. Let yourself be
transported into the
Belgian chansonnier’s
world and experience
for yourself why he has
remained such a vibrant
musical icon.

IT’S SO NICE
COMPAGNIE OH MY GOD!
This conference /
performance / video
screening creates a
link between past and
present. The audience is
invited on a guided tour
through a portrait gallery
featuring two symbols of
femininity and power of
the 16th century: Mary
Stuart, Queen of Scots,
and Elizabeth I, Queen of
England. Barbara Sylvain
and Lula Béry question
our world of political
intrigues and influence
games, while exploring
the thin line between
love and hatred, true
and fake, magnificence
and ridicule. This
kaleidoscopic drama
shuffles the cards of
power plunging the
audience headlong into
a right royal burlesque
tragedy.

‘You can’t help hanging on Pierre Baux’s
every word. Vincent Courtois performs
in-between words – or underneath –
and from his cello gets astonishing
monologues’.
Libération, about ‘Les Contes de Grimm’
ROCK
ATELIER DU PLATEAU
In this musical show,
presented at Avignon
Festival (2010 official
programme), actor
Pierre Baux and cellist
Vincent Courtois give life
to 70s rock’n’roll New
York through dialogues,
memories, dreams and
digressions collected by
Legs McNeil and Gillian
McCain in Please Kill
Me. This uncensored oral
history of punk played on
stage is haunted by Jim
Morrison, Patti Smith,
Allen Ginsberg, Iggy Pop,
Philippe Marcadé.
Baux and Courtois
have been successfully
working together on very
different repertoires
– Grimm, Borges,
Andersen, Kafka – but
they really rock here
when celebrating the
birth of a new, crazy,
revolting, fascinating
music!
