I am thrilled to be invited to judge at the 2016 AAC Nationals! Currently, with assistance from husband Dave, I am owned and operated by a pack of 6 wonderful Bernese Mountain Dogs. I am kept happily entertained as a professional Pet Groomer, and in my other life as a trainer and coach for DAWG in Nanaimo instructing various dog sports such as trick classes, rally-O, draft, obedience and agility. In the 20 plus years as an AAC agility judge, I have had the pleasure of meeting many dog friends and seeing some of the best competition agility team efforts ever performed! I know how it feels to be standing on the start line, knowing you can do the task ahead and hoping it will go as planned. Ending up on the podium feels fantastic, but far more important is the joy and work we put in towards that end goal with our fantastic dogs running by our side! As a previous AAC Regionals and Nationals organizer, I am grateful for the dedication of all the volunteers who will make this magical event happen, and wish all participants a great weekend of fun with their dogs! 8 Bonjour Agilistes ! Hello agility enthusiasts! It is an immense pleasure to be participating in this event as a judge and I extend my thanks to the organizing committee for the invitation. I will have the pleasure of witnessing your success on the field. In my opinion, the National Championship is the ‘not to be missed’ agility event of the season! I started agility with Scarlette, my Giant Schnauzer, in 1995. While our initial competitions were ‘just for fun’, I quickly became an agility addict. In 2001, Scarlett and I were one of the 43 teams who participated in the very first Regional Championship in Quebec. Agility is a fantastic sport that I subsequently shared with my Briards, Ebène and Leelou. My current team partners are June, a 7 year-old Briard who is always ready to share my passion for agility, and her daughter, P!NK, who is just 18 months old. Since my start in agility, I have been a member of an agility club in Quebec City called Les Mordus de l’Agilité. I am proud to have participated in the organization of 5 Quebec Regional Championships with my fellow club members. I have been an AAC judge since 2003. I have had the privilege of judging the Regional Championships in numerous provinces and this will be the second time I will judge the National Championships. Whether this is your 16th participation or your very first, I hope that you have lots of fun and come away from the event with wonderful memories. Because after all, even at this elite level of competition, never forget the most important goal in agility: to have fun with our furry friends! Happy training and we’ll see you in Montreal in August! It is with great pleasure that I am preparing to judge the 2016 AAC Agility Championships for the first time. When this prestigious event was held in Montreal in 2004 (organized by the Club D ‘Agilité de Montréal), I was a new Masters level judge and I did not think I had enough experience. Now, with 15 years of judging experience, I feel ready to take on the challenge. I am proud of the experience and knowledge I have acquired and shared since my start in 1993. My daughter, Marie-Noëlle, competed in several world championships and became a judge. Now my grandson, Antoine, is following in the family footsteps; as I write this text, he is officially an apprentice judge for Starters and Advanced. I am proud to say that we are three generations of judges who share a passion for the sport of agility. On a personal note, I started agility with an Akita in 1995 and subsequently switched to Australian Shepherds. I love the breed – they have that combination of great work drive and fun! Currently I have an Aussie (Kazoom) who is working towards his Expert Gold titles, as well as a 6-month old Border Collie who is beginning his training and is full of potential. From the outset, I was active with several agility clubs who were able to benefit from my experience and knowledge. As founder and President of Club D’Agilité de Montréal since 2003, this club is my priority. I have been the AAC Provincial Representative for Quebec for more than 6 years I wish every competitor good luck and above all, lots of fun and pleasure during every moment of the event. Even if your goal is a spot on the podium, the most important thing is not to win, but to participate. Give everything you’ve got; this is your moment of glory! I am honored to participate in the 2016 National Championships as a judge. It is a hat I will wear with pride, a presence that warms my heart and a mission I will undertake with rigour for every competitor. For those who do not know me well, here is a snapshot of my AAC career. I have been a competitor since 1995 and a judge since 2000. I had the privilege of participating in the AAC National Championships from 2002 to 2009 and at the World Championships 3 consecutive years with my Belgian Tervuren, Sonic. While Sonic is now deceased, she taught me the true definition of ‘a team’ and made me feel that team spirit to the core of my being. She was my heart dog….she taught me to live the sensation of being one with your dog, alone in the world during your run, the seconds of the run ticking as you accomplish the current challenge together. It is an extraordinary feeling that you want to live and relive… Since 2009, I am privileged to work with a canine partner in my job. Forming a team with my German Shepherd is critical to accomplishing our daily tasks. Today, my wish for each of you is to form a team, to experience the pleasure of being ‘one’ and to be successful in accomplishing your tasks and goals for the National Championships. Let me introduce you to my dogs: ‘Boomer’, my retired German Shepherd, ‘Jack’, my current work partner, and my smallest and newest, ‘Clic’, a Shetland Sheepdog who thinks she is a German Shepherd. Her name carries significance for me... the desire to forge a new agility team. I look forward to watching you run at the Nationals! 9 Présentation des Juges Presentation of Our Judges 10 J’ai eu des chiens toute ma vie. I’ve had dogs all my life. I took my first obedience class in my late teens and was hooked. I joined a local dog club and the CKC in my early twenties and never looked back. As my obedience training experience grew, I volunteered to help the local instructor and soon was assisting, with hopes of one day becoming an obedience judge. That goal became a reality in 1995. Since then, I have had the opportunity to judge all across Canada and in Bermuda. My judging responsibilities are shared between agility, obedience & rally-obedience with the CKC and the AAC. I was Vice President for 1½ years and I continue to perform course approval. I’ve had the honour of judging the AAC National Championships five times, several AAC Regionals and many obedience specialties for breed clubs. I chose my first Shetland Sheepdog in 1985 and bred Shelties for 10 years. When I moved from the city to the country in 1991, my first Belgian Shepherd Dog became part of the family. I rejoined the Sheltie world in 2012 when I brought home my newest Sheltie puppy from Cassbar Shelties. I feel privileged, and very excited, to be selected as one of the judges for the 2016 National Agility Championships being hosted by Club d’Agilité de Montréal. It is an honour to be working with my fellow AAC judges involved this year as well as the countless volunteers who will be contributing to the success of the 2016 Nationals; without them, it would not be possible to host this special event. Achievements with my dogs include an OTCH and the first National Agility Trial Champion award in Canada with my first Sheltie, Phoenix. I also have a variety of titles in obedience (CD, CDX) and in agility (ADC, AADC, MADC) along with several Masters game titles. I still compete occasionally in obedience and agility with our family’s dogs. When I’m not judging, training my dogs or giving classes, I spend my weekdays working as a cabinet maker for Nygard International in Winnipeg. I still ply my trade as a licensed carpenter on a part time basis, specializing in the finishing aspect of construction and occasionally building agility equipment. My wife and I are excited to have started ‘Backyard Agility Dogs’ (BADogs), an agility training and trial site near Petersfield, MB. I would like to extend good wishes to all competitors participating in the 2016 National Agility Championships in Montreal. Enjoy and have fun! My agility journey began in 2001 with my first Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Chance. In 2004, I co-founded my own agility club, The Agility Connection (TAC), which now hosts three annual AAC Trials at Lake Ontario Park in Kingston and monthly fun matches during the indoor season. My judging experience began by designing and judging courses for TAC. I attended my first judge’s clinic in August 2009 as a Starters/Advanced candidate and completed my practical judging exam “at home” in 2010. In 2014, I organized my first judge’s upgrade clinic and went on to complete my practical judging assignment at Absolute Agility (AARF) later that year. Since then, I have had the opportunity to judge Starters, Advanced and Masters events at thirteen trials for eleven different clubs with another eight judging assignments currently scheduled for 2016, aside from Nationals. I am passionate about the welfare of less fortunate dogs, having organized many successful fundraisers and volunteering for numerous dog-related charities, including the emergency shelter for Humane Society International (HSI) in Quebec. Since finding my passion for rescue, I have had the privilege of welcoming nearly forty dogs into my home for stays anywhere from one night to nineteen months. I currently share my heart and home with four Chesapeake Bay Retrievers (Auden, True, Forrest, and Lyric), a Border Collie X (Livy, in agility training with my daughter) and an all Canadian (Fayth). I very much look forward to the opportunity/experience of adding the 2016 National Agility Championships to my judging portfolio and I wish everyone the very best of luck. I started agility in Ontario in 1998 when moving to Ontario from Nova Scotia. I started with my fabulous Dalmatian, Apache. She completed her VADC, VAADC, VMADC and VMJDC before leaving for the Rainbow Bridge in August of 2005. She also competed in the 2004 Ontario Regionals and qualified for Nationals, where I was VERY proud to have the only Dalmatian competing in the 2004 AAC Nationals in Montreal, Quebec. I have taught agility since 2000 and have been loving it ever since. I’ve had the privilege of volunteering at many club trials in Ontario and have learned how important volunteers are. Agility has brought me so much more than ribbons and titles; it has taught me a lot about life. Take the time to enjoy the things around you and take the opportunity to remove stress from your life and replace it with positive energy. And as a dear friend of mine has said to me, “The most important thing to bring home from a trial is your dog ... after all ... Isn’t that who it is all about!” I have competed in AAC, CPE, USDAA, UKI and PDSC with 5 of my 6 dogs. I currently have 3 Border Collies, 2 Dalmatians and 1 All Canadian. My veteran dog Fredericka (who I lost in December 2015) and I completed Lifetime and Lifetime Versatility awards, earning every title the AAC has with the exception of the Challenge Silver and Gold Expert awards. She and I won several Regional championships and 1 National Championship. Fredericka and I placed in the top 6 at Nationals from 2008 to 2015. I have been an AAC judge since 2007 and am also a judge for CPE, PDSC and UKI. I enjoy the opportunity to travel and meet so many fabulous people who love this sport as much as I do! I have been on the committees for the Ontario Regionals from 2006 to 2016 in addition to five Nationals. I am currently on the Judges’ Standing Advisory Committee with the AAC and am the Recording Secretary for the AAC Board of Directors. I also judged AB/NWT Regionals in 2014 and 2016 and the MB/SK/NU Regionals in 2015. Have fun and Enjoy every Moment!
