Le Centre gériatrique Maimonides vise à devenir le premier
centre de soins de longue durée au Canada à être désigné à titre
d’organisme Planetree, à l’avant-garde des soins axés sur le client.
Un comité de direction Planetree, formé d’environ 20
membres du personnel de toutes les disciplines ainsi que de
résidents et des membres de leur famille, a été mis sur pied et se
rencontre une fois par mois. Tenant compte des commentaires reçus de la
communauté de Maimonides, le comité a décidé de se concentrer sur ces
secteurs à améliorer : le processus d’admission, l’expérience culinaire des
résidents et l’amélioration de la communication.
Ci-dessous, les 10 composantes des soins continus dans le cadre du
modèle Planetree qui sont maintenant au cœur de tout ce que nous faisons à
Maimonides.

Maimonides is working towards becoming the first long-term care
centre in Canada to be designated a Planetree organization at the
forefront of client-centred care.
A Planetree Steering committee made up of about 20 staff
from all disciplines as well as residents and family members has
been set up and meets once a month. Based on feedback from
the Maimonides community, they have decided to focus on the
following three areas of improvement: the Admission Process, the Dining
Experience and Improved Communication.
Below are the 10 Continuing Care components of Planetree now at the core
of everything we do at Maimonides.

New elevators up
and running
Two new elevators on the south side of the building are now up and running.
The oversize elevators, located exterior to the building on the garden side, are
very spacious and allow for quicker transport of our residents and visitors. The
elevators include enhanced security features for the safety of wandering
residents. New atriums have replaced the balconies that lead to the elevators.
Long waits have been an ongoing concern for residents at Maimonides who are
dependent on them to get anywhere in the building. The addition of the new
elevators will greatly enhance the quality of life for Maimonides residents.
Funding was provided by the Provincial government.
Deux ascenseurs neufs
pleinement fonctionnels
Deux ascenseurs neufs situés du côté sud de l’immeuble sont maintenant
pleinement fonctionnels. Installés à l’extérieur de l’immeuble du côté jardin,
ces ascenseurs surdimensionnés permettent aux résidents et aux visiteurs de se
déplacer plus rapidement d'un étage à l'autre. De plus, ils sont équipés de
dispositifs de sécurité pour protéger les résidents qui sont sujets à l’errance. De
nouveaux atriums ont remplacé les balcons qui menaient aux ascenseurs. Les
longues attentes importunent depuis longtemps les résidents de Maimonides
qui doivent prendre l’ascenseur pour se rendre à tout autre endroit dans
l’immeuble. L’ajout de ces ascenseurs neufs améliorera énormément la qualité
de vie des résidents du Centre gériatrique Maimonides. Les fonds pour ce
projet ont été octroyés par le gouvernement provincial.

There seems to be a real need for information about
the process of getting into Maimonides and its
Community resources. A new brochure, produced by
the Communications Department, is flying off the
shelves. The goal is to help family members access the
various resources overseen by Maimonides. “It is often
very difficult for family members to understand what
to do when their loved one can no longer live alone. It
is a very stressful time and the need for information is
great,” says Lucie Tremblay, Director of Nursing and Clinical Services.
Maimonides oversees the Helen and Sam Steinberg Day Hospital, short-term
respite stays, accredited homes in the community, Intermediate Resources and
a 387-bed long-term care facility. If you would like a copy of the brochure,

Il semble y avoir un besoin criant d’information sur la marche à suivre
pour être admis au Centre gériatrique et accéder à ses ressources
communautaires. Une nouvelle brochure, préparée par le service des
communications, s’envole rapidement. Le but est d’aider les membres des
familles à accéder aux diverses ressources administrées par le Centre
gériatrique Maimonides. « C’est souvent très difficile pour une personne de
constater qu'un de ses parents ne peut plus vivre seul. C’est un moment très
stressant et il y a un grand besoin d'information », affirme Lucie Tremblay,
directrice des Soins infirmiers et des services cliniques. Le Centre gériatrique
Maimonides encadre l’Hôpital de jour Helen et Sam Steinberg, les services
de répit de courte durée, les résidences agréées de la communauté, les ressources

Maimonides Battle
of the Bands... a oneof-a kind event!!
The 6thth annual Maimonides Battle of the Bands was a rock’n
success generating $225,000 towards the Suite Dreams
Capital Renovation Campaign to refurbish all of the residents’
rooms. The who’s who of the Montreal Jewish community
packed Metropolis on Wednesday December 3rd and Thursday
December 4th to hear eight amateur bands made up of
dentists, lawyers and other professionals belt it out to raise
funds for Maimonides Geriatric Centre.
“The amount we raised is amazing given the tough economic
climate. This is truly a gem of an event and we are thrilled that
the community supports us year after year,” says Gerry
Kandestin who co-chaired the 2008 Battle of the Bands with
Rory Olson and Terri Klein.

La sixième édition de l’événement Battle of the Bands du Centre
gériatrique Maimonides a connu un succès retentissant, amassant
225 000 $ au profit du projet de rénovation Suites royales qui a pour
objet de moderniser toutes les chambres des résidents. Le gratin de la
communauté juive de Montréal a rempli le Metropolis le mercredi 3
décembre et le jeudi 4 décembre pour assister au spectacle de huit groupes
de musiciens amateurs formés de dentistes, d’avocats et d’autres
professionnels qui se sont dépensés pour recueillir des fonds au profit du
Centre gériatrique Maimonides.
La somme amassée est incroyable si l’on tient compte de la morosité du
climat économique. « C’était un bijou de soirée et nous sommes heureux
que la communauté nous appuie bon an mal an », déclare Gerry
Kandestin, un des co-présidents du Battle of the Bands de 2008, en
compagnie de ses homologues Rory Olson et Terri Klein.

has come that a parent can no longer live
independently. The fact is that many families wait
until a crisis thrusts them into the maze of senior
care. It is much better to plan ahead and avoid the
crisis altogether if possible. Below are some questions
that can clarify your parents’ needs and identify if
home alone continues to be the best option for them.

assessed and explore options that could avoid a future crisis such as a fall or hospital
admission. The best way to do this is to contact your local CSSS (formerly CLSC) and ask for
the intake Social Worker.

Larry Nachshen received the Outstanding Service
Award in recognition of his exceptional
dedication to Maimonides. Larry has been
involved with the Centre and Foundation in
many capacities for about 10 years, including
four years as Foundation President and is slated
to be the next Centre Board President. He is a
true champion for the cause, whether being the
first to sponsor a bed or a room or getting his
friends on board as sponsors for the Foundation’s
latest fundraising events. Larry has been truly
instrumental in making many dreams a reality
including the Beds Campaign, the purchase of
countless pieces of new equipment, the growth of
the Research program and the Suite Dreams
Capital Renovation Campaign.

during the Annual General Meeting. CSL has been very gracious to allow
Maimonides to use its boardroom for day-long retreats which are an integral part

A GIFT FROM THE HEART
Thanks to a generous donation from Foundation Board member Randi
Greenberg, the Maimonides Geriatric Centre Foundation recently purchased
a new state-of-the-art electrocardiogram (EKG) machine. This user-friendly
portable device enables nursing staff to check the residents’ heart rhythm or
detect any weaknesses in the heart muscle. Immediate results can be stored or
printed. The machine also has the possibility to eventually be able to email
information directly to a hospital
or to a doctor who is not on-site.
As well, this gift is an integral part
of a new research project.

Grâce à un généreux don de Randi Greenberg, membre de la Fondation
du Centre gériatrique Maimonides, le Centre a récemment acheté un nouvel
appareil électrocardiogramme à la fine pointe de la technologie. Cet appareil
portable convivial permet au personnel infirmier de vérifier le rythme
cardiaque ou toute autre d’éfaillance cardiaque du muscle cardiaque des
résidents. Les résultats immédiats peuvent être conservés ou imprimés.
L’appareil pourrait éventuellement avoir la capacité d’envoyer les résultats par
courriel à un hôpital ou à un médecin qui n’est pas sur les lieux. De plus, ce
don fait partie intégrante d’un nouveau projet de recherche.

eligible to come to Maimonides or any other Jewish long-term care centre in
the province. That means that whether you live in Laval or Ste-Agathe or any
other area, you can come to Maimonides. “The new CSSS structure is
designed to provide health care close to home. However, for Jews in Quebec
who require long term care, and want to live in a Jewish environment,
Maimonides is always an option. We have always been accessible to all
members of our community and this has not changed. It’s important for the
public to be well informed and to know they have the right to be at
Maimonides if they choose.” says Len Lewkowict, Centre Board President.

Empowering Seniors for Healthier Community Living at the 9th Global
conference on Aging which was held in Montreal.
Barbra Gold, Executive Director, Karen Flam, Foundation
Director, Lucie Tremblay, Director of Nursing and Clinical Services
and Len Lewkowict, Centre Board President, were the guest
speakers at the Excellence in Eldercare symposium that was held in
Fredericton, New Brunswick. Barbra Gold and Karen Flam also
spoke at the 2009 annual AJAS conference in California about
“Partnership of the Development Director and the CEO.”
Georgia Graphos, Clinical Nutrition Chief, gave a presentation
about Tubefeeding at the 2008 American Association of Food and
Nutrition Conference in Chicago, Illinois. Georgia also spoke about
Malnutrition in the elderly at CLSC René Cassin.
CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE
A delegation of about 25 people from the Japan Association of Health Service Management
Consultants recently visited Maimonides to learn about its award-winning programs and
services. The delegation comprised of doctors, surgeons, hospital administrators,
pharmacists, accountants and architects were particularly interested in learning about the
partnerships with Accredited Homes and Intermediate Resources as well as the design
elements of the Suite Dreams project.

Stefania Iapaolo, Risk Manager, and Paula Levinson, Head Nurse,
gave several presentations about our award-winning Fall Prevention
program including at the National Collaborative on the Prevention of
Falls in Long-term Care from the Safer Healthcare Now campaign
which was held in Halifax and the Kunin-Lunenfeld Applied Research
Unit conference in Toronto.
Paula Levinson, Head Nurse, was a Poster Judge for The Challenges
of Inter-professional Practice symposium which was held in
Montreal.
Lucie Tremblay, Director of Nursing and Clinical Services, gave
several presentations on the minimizing the use of restraints
including at l’Association des Résidences et CHSLD privées du
Québec, 5e Colloque Québécois-Positionnement et Mobilité in SaintHyacinthe. Ms. Tremblay was a guest speaker at the renowned
“Journée de rencontre gérontologique” which was held in France. She
discussed the human side of care. Ms. Tremblay also discussed
“Éthique dans un milieu institutionnel” to the UQUAM School of
Social Work. Most recently, Ms. Tremblay was a guest speaker at the
Canadian Nurses Association Leadership Conference which was held
in Toronto.
Kim Weippert, Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, received the
Professional of the Year award from the Canadian Therapeutic
Recreation Association.

AUSTRALIAN VISIT
Fiona Steel, from New South Wales, Australia recently visited Maimonides to learn how the Art For
Healing galleries have impacted the lives of our residents. Fiona works for Operation Art, an
Australian government project that takes school children’s art and places it in hospitals. Maimonides
was selected as a study site (one of only 4 in Canada!) due to our terrific involvement with the Art for
Healing Foundation. Maimonides is in good company. During this education visit to Canada and
the USA, Fiona also visited Columbia University and the Yale Children’s Hospital.

Fiona Steel, de Nouvelle-Galles-du-Sud, en Australie, a récemment rendu visite au Centre
gériatrique Maimonides pour se renseigner sur l’impact des galeries de l’Art pour la guérison sur la

NEW CHAIR OF AJAS
Barbra Gold, Executive Director, was recently named Chair
of the Board of Directors of the Association of Jewish Aging
Services of North America (AJAS). The AJAS membership is
comprised of over 115 organizations with Jewishsponsored nursing homes, housing communities, and
outreach programs throughout the United States and
Canada. AJAS was founded in 1960 and continues to
function as the central coordinator for homes and
residential facilities for Jewish elderly in North America. “I
am looking forward to working with Barbra as she brings
an enormous amount of experience, caring and concern for our Association. Barbra has
served as a chair and member of many AJAS committees and task groups, that have
enriched, grown and developed programs and services for our member organizations, their
staff and those they serve throughout North America.” says Harvey Tillipman, CEO of AJAS.

NEW ROOMS
We are proud to say that all of our resident rooms have now been renovated
as part of the Suite Dreams Capital Renovation Campaign. The renovation
of the small chapel, multi-purpose room, dining rooms and activity rooms
will be complete in the coming months. The Maimonides Foundation
continues to install recognition plaques outside rooms which have been
sponsored. A special unveiling ceremony and reception are held to honour
each of the room donors. We still need room sponsors. It costs $7,200 to
sponsor a room. There are 255 private and 66 semi-private rooms to be
sponsored. Consider sponsoring the room where your family member
lived or now calls home. It is such a meaningful way to honor them.

Twenty-four black and white photos by the late
local artist Morrie Bakerman have been
grouped together for a gallery on the 3rd floor-A
Wing. The photos were donated by his sister
Susan Witt, and the framing was made possible
thanks to a generous donation by David and
Gail Auerbach, friends of the late photographer.

Twenty-three original oil on canvas works of
art donated by noted artist Rita Briansky and
her late husband Joseph Prezament create a
gallery on the 6th Floor in the main area just
outside the elevators. The works are a
combination of abstracts and colourful
country scenes.
90 year old artist Anita Ein Shapiro has donated
27 original works of art, in oil and watercolor
that have been installed on the 4th floor, B wing.
Her work is colourful and vibrant with subject
matter that varies from animals to plant life and
vast landscapes.
