LETTER FROM CHAIRS
Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of the Organization Committee, and of the four bodies involved in this venture since the beginning, we are happy to
welcome you in Juan les Pins for this third meeting of ECIL.
ECIL is now four year old and goes on its main objective: help the hematology and infectious diseases community to optimize
the management of leukemia and stem cell transplant patients. Our previous meetings have mainly focused on drug prophylaxis
and therapy of infectious complications and those of you who already attended ECIL1 or ECIL 2 know how much these previous
meetings were interactive. They were also productive: the slide kits of ECIL are available on each of the websites of the four
organizations involved: the EORTC Infectious Diseases Group, the EBMT Infectious Diseases Working Party, the European
Leukemia Net, and the Immunocompromised Host Society. The manuscripts of ECIL 1 were published in 2007 in the European
Journal of Cancer and the viral guidelines of 2007 were published in two original articles in Bone Marrow Transplantation, in
2008 and 2009.
Our goals for ECIL 3 are the following:
1) To update the previous antifungal and antiviral guidelines whose first versions were the purpose of ECIL 1 and ECIL2,
respectively
2) To address a hot and difficult topic: the non-invasive diagnostic procedures for invasive fungal infections.
We will again focus on the leukemia patients, even though data from other populations will be considered.
Thank you so much to all of you who have kindly accepted either to update your previous guidelines, or lead, or participate in,
new working groups. Once again, ECIL should be a place where experts work for the community, and we are confident that you
all will help the working groups to finalize their proposals.
