C'est en 1897 que la Fabrique Nationale (F.N.) de Herstal
conçoit son premier Browning HP 35 sous licence, un
pistolet inventé et mis au point par l'américain John Moses
Browning. La collaboration belgo-américaine a été croissante,
jusqu’à l'intégration de Browning Arms Company au sein de
Herstal Group, en tant que filiale. Au départ, Browning n'avait
jamais travaillé avec des designers. D'ailleurs, aucun fabricant
d'armes de sport n'avait ressenti le besoin de s'intéresser
à l'esthétique industrielle, explique Serge Rusak, Designer
indépendant qui rejoint les équipes R&D de Browning pour
des missions ponctuelles. Le nom Browning a acquis une
forte notoriété, entre autres, grâce à sa spécialisation dans les
sports de raquette, de golf, de pêche, de chasse et de tir. Sa
section golf dirigée par Bernard de Cléty, concevant des clubs
en graphite et inox comme la ligne Acera est particulièrement
réputée. Dans le secteur des armes de loisir, l'effort esthétique
a été l’un des facteurs qui a permis de propulser les ventes.
Ainsi le modèle Shorttrac, qui connaissait un succès commercial
relatif, a rencontré une grande popularité après son relooking.
Les caractéristiques techniques de l'arme n'ont pas évolué mais
le travail sur l'ergonomie et les formes lui a été bénéfique. Serge
Rusak explique C’est en observant une chaussure de jogging
que m'est venue l’idée d'intégrer du gel dans la plaque de couche
afin d'absorber le recul et d'augmenter le confort du fusil. Ce qui
était parfait au niveau de la course à pied est devenu un élément
incontournable de confort des armes modernes. C’est là tout
l'intérêt d'un œil extérieur dans un domaine très pointu. Avant
cette première expérience chez Browning, Serge Rusak ne savait
rien des armes. Son regard neuf et sa capacité à comprendre
les contingences techniques ont facilité son intégration au sein
de l'équipe. Nous avions affaire à un professionnel qui avait des
notions de mécanique et des connaissances dans le domaine
des matériaux. L'intégration s'est faite de façon très naturelle.
Serge Rusak s'est adapté à notre mode de travail en apportant
ses touches personnelles qui, au final, sont bénéfiques pour nos
produits et notre marque, explique Thierry Dumortier, Directeur
du service R&D. Cette entente professionnelle a d'ailleurs donné
son nom à un fusil : le Cynergy.
It was in 1897 that the Fabrique Nationale (F.N.) at Herstal created
its first Browning HP 35 under licence, a gun invented and
perfected by the American John Moses Browning. The BelgoAmerican collaboration had been growing, until the integration
of the Browning Arms Company within the Herstal Group, as a
subsidiary. In the beginning, Browning had never worked with
designers. In fact, no sporting arms manufacturer had felt the
need to be interested in industrial aesthetics, explains Serge
Rusak, a self-employed designer who joins the Browning R&D
teams for specific projects. The name Browning has acquired a
strong notoriety, among other things, thanks to its specialisation
in racquet sports, golf, fishing, hunting and shooting. The golf
section led by Bernard de Cléty, creates clubs in graphite and
inox, the Acera line is particularly well known. In the weapons
for leisure sector, the effort which has gone into aesthetics has
been one of the factors responsible for the surge in sales. Just
like the Shorttrac, a relatively successful model, which found
great popularity following its relooking. The technical features
of the gun haven’t changed, but it has benefited from work on
the ergonomics and the shaping. Serge Rusak explains that
It was by observing a running shoe that that the idea came to
me of introducing a gel into the plates in order to absorb the
kick-back and increase the comfort of the gun. That which was
perfect for running races has become a key element of comfort
for modern arms. Thereby lies the interest of an external eye on
a very specialised area. Prior to this first experience at Browning,
Serge Rusak had no previous knowledge of guns. His fresh look
and his ability to understand the technical contingencies have
facilitated his integration within the team. We were dealing with
a professional who had a limited knowledge of mechanics and
materials. The integration happened in a very natural way. Serge
Rusak adapted himself to our style of working whilst bringing his
personal touches which, in the end, are beneficial to our products
and our brand, explains Thierry Dumortier, R&D Director. This
professional understanding has in fact lent its name to a gun :
the Cynergy.
