The overall incidence of illness in the cohort was 20.7
(95% CI 18.5 to 23.1). For all teams, the incidence of
illness according to location and travelling was
significantly higher in the time period following
international travel (32.6; 95% CI 19.6 to 53.5) compared
with the baseline (15.4; 95% CI 8.7 to 27.0) or after
returning to their home country (10.6; 95% CI 6.1 to
18.2).
Conclusions There is a higher incidence of illness in
athletes following international travel to a foreign country
that is >5 h time difference and this returns to baseline
on return to the home country.

Increased Risk of Illness

This study shows for the first time that elite athletes
travelling to international destinations >5 time zone
differences from their home country is associated with a
2–3 times increased risk of all illness, respiratory tract
illness, GIT illness and all infective illness. Identification of
this period where athletes are at higher risk allows the
team physician to plan certain preventative measures and
have increased vigilance during this time.

State of Emergency
Declared in Burma
Burma’s president, Thein Sein, has declared a state of emergency
in the town of Meikhtila and the surrounding region due to
ongoing violence between the Muslim and Buddhist population
in central Burma.
The violence allegedly began when a Muslim owner of a gold
shop got into a dispute with his Buddhist customers. Muslims
are now fleeing the area and seeking refuge from marauding
Buddhists who have killed an estimated 20 people and have
burned homes and at least 5 mosques in the town, according to
news reports...
Escalating violence and rioting has led the police to evacuate
close to 1,500 people from Meikhtila. A veiled Buddhist monk
even put a knife to the neck of one Associated Press
photographer and forced him to surrender his camera’s memory
stick. Attempts to suppress press freedom are not unusual, but
these events demonstrate that despite Burma’s relaxation of
media censorship, protection of press freedoms is not a given.

The government called for an end to "religious extremism"
Curfews have been imposed on three more Burmese towns as attacks on Muslim
communities spread closer to Rangoon. Mosques and other Muslim buildings have
been attacked by crowds of Buddhists in towns on the road from Rangoon to
Pyay, about 200km (125 miles) to the north.
The US has warned its citizens to avoid travel to parts of Burma due to the
violence, which began a week ago. A state of emergency is in force in the central
town of Meiktila, where some 40 deaths have been reported.
Soldiers clearing debris from buildings torched by angry mobs retrieved eight more
bodies in the town, the New Light of Myanmar newspaper reported on Tuesday.
In Bago region to the north of Rangoon, state television said Muslim religious
buildings, shops and houses had been damaged.
Residents outside the capital said they did not feel safe.
"The situation is better than the previous day but we can't sleep well at night," one
man, a Buddhist, told Reuters. "People are still afraid of buildings being set on fire
because there isn't security everywhere."

countries, is thought to be related to the
increase in international travel, pest control
strategy changes in travel lodgings, and
insecticide resistance. Bed bug infestations
have been increasingly reported in hotels,
theaters, and any locations where people
congregate, even in the workplace,
dormitories, and schools. Bed bugs may be
transported in luggage and on clothing.
Transport of personal belongings in
contaminated transport vehicles is another
means of spread of these insects.
