A l'Est de Central Park, l'Upper East Side s'étend de la 59th street à la 96th
street entre la 5th Avenue et l'East River.
Ce quartier résidentiel et familial a été parfois surnommé le "District des bas de soie"
(Silk Stocking District), il est habité par une population très riche, et le prix de
l'immobilier se situe parmi les plus élévés des Etats-Unis. L'Upper East Side est
réputé pour ses habitants célèbres comme Georges Soros, Woody Allen, Michael
Bloomberg, Ruppert Murdoch ou Madonna mais également pour ses prestigieuses
écoles privées, le Lycée Français, ses hôtels luxueux (Plaza Hotel, Carlyle Hotel,
Plaza Hotel Athenee, Four Seasons, The Pierre Hotel), et ses lieux de sortie connus
à travers le monde, des magasins de luxe aux restaurants chics. Le quartier est
équivalent au 16ème arrondissement de Paris.
