Il me faisait trop enrager. The three works on this disc illustrate two significant moments in Ernest Chausson’s musical production. The Concert in D major, Op. 21 (for piano, violin and string quartet), written between May 1889 and July 1891, is emblematic of the mastery attained by the composer at this precise point in his evolution: along with the Symphony in B flat, Op. 20 (September 1889-August 1890), it is the work that consecrated Chausson as a major musician of his time. The String Quartet, Op. 35 (left unfinished) and Chanson perpétuelle, Op. 37 mark the final term of the composer’s work and bear witness to the further progress made during the decade since the Concert - a period during which other masterpieces came into being, in particular the song cycle on poems by Maeterlinck, Serres chaudes, the Poème for violin and orchestra and the Piano Quartet, Op. 30. Much has been written about the Concert. In his monograph devoted to Chausson, Jean Gallois stresses, in regard to the work’s title, the composer’s interest in 18th-century French music and, in particular, Rameau - the author, precisely, of Pièces de clavecin en Concert, transcribed in the form of concerts in sextet1. Chausson’s Concert doubtless derives part of its force from the way this reference to the Baroque spirit, and the corollary clarity of the arrangement, blend with the Franckist influence. The latter is especially evident, as we know, in the recourse to the cyclic process whose function is to substitute unity of a thematic nature, in music modulating continuously, for unity that was previously based on the play of keys. In the Concert, however, no theme returns from one movement to the next in a form that is immediately perceptible. Rather, what ensures the work’s thematic unity is much more the underlying presence of a matrix from which musical ideas, always different and highly individualised, are elaborated quite freely. Particularly striking is the way in which the changes of sound texture, permitted by the Concert’s unusual instrumentation, ensure the articulation of the form. Schematically, three types of situation arise, creating a form of dramaturgy that continually evokes one or another of Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos 1 See Jean Gallois, Ernest Chausson, Paris, Fayard, 1994, p. 289. Gallois mentions the fact that, in December 1888-January 1889, Chausson had re-orchestrated various pieces by Rameau, including the IVe Concert en sextuor. 13 Livret Saphir LVC 1092:Mise en page 1 02/07/10 17:15 Page14 (which originally also bore the title ‘Concerts’): sometimes the musical discourse is concentrated in the dialogue of the principal violin and piano, as if this were a sonata, and sometimes it is the opposite: in the absence of the principal violin, a piano quintet sonority will give a passage its particular colour; and finally, the ‘concert’ of six instruments sounds at times like a veritable sextet with piano. In detail, Chausson uses the possibility of varying the sound combinations with great delicacy and intelligence: the main theme of the Grave, for example, is played at the outset by the principal violin alone over a piano ostinato; when this theme comes back at the end of the movement, with an intensity increased tenfold, the principal violin, in the high register, is doubled at the octave by the first violin of the quartet, and the piano deploys the melody over three octaves, whereas the ostinato goes to the other three instruments of the quartet. Unlike the Concert, the String Quartet in C minor remains ill-known even today. Yet it would have been one of Chausson’s major works had his sudden death not prevented its completion. Chausson himself mentioned the originality and ambition of the project he had in mind - his final project - in a letter to violinist Mathieu Crickboom in July 1898: « I am working on a string quartet for you. […] I believe it is neither Franck, nor d’Indy, nor Debussy, but I fear there may be a bit of Beethoven. In the final analysis, one is so sure of not truly resembling the latter that there’s nothing really wrong with emerging from it a little! » 2 Beyond certain resemblances of detail - Jean Gallois rightly noted the kinship of the third movement theme to that of the Scherzando vivace in Beethoven’s Opus 127 3 -, it is doubtless, more profoundly, the work’s overall conception that takes inspiration from the Beethovenian model. Nonetheless, the language is clearly post-Wagnerian as attests the omnipresence of dissonance engendered by leading notes, altered notes, appoggiaturas, etc., and the exacerbation of specific forms of tension resulting from them. In this regard, it suffices to compare the melodic handling and expressive character suitable for the themes with which, respectively, Beethoven’s Quartet, Op. 59 no. 1 and Chausson’s Opus 35 open; one thus measures how both composers exploit the resources of tonality but in a thoroughly different spirit. From this point of view, it would be instructive to compare Chausson’s Quartet and Schönberg’s earliest chamber music scores (composed during the same period), in particular Verklärte Nacht. The composition of the first movement (Grave – Modéré) was spread over several months, with the end of the manuscript bearing the date of 25 October 1898. In a letter sent a few days later to Henry Lerolle, Chausson wrote: 2 3 14 Quoted by Gallois, op.cit., p. 501. Ibid., p. 513. Livret Saphir LVC 1092:Mise en page 1 02/07/10 17:15 Page15 « Indeed, I’m dropping the Quartet, at least for the moment - it was pestering me too much, and I was becoming stupid. You must believe that the fault lies even more with it than with me, for since I packed it in, I feel infinitely better; I’m even surprised to find myself working without difficulty on a song (orchestra) that Madame Raunay asked me for quite some time ago. » 4 The movement’s structure conforms to sonata form, which is, however, treated quite freely (the two principal themes of the Modéré, for example, are in the key of C: the first in minor, the second in major). More important here is the dialectic that is established between the theme of the long slow introduction (Grave) and the opening theme of the Modéré. Although related on the melodic level, these two musical ideas contrast sharply on the expressive level: the melancholy languor of the first as opposed to the energetic, wilful character of the second (one will note the determining role played, in this characterisation, by the sixth degree, minor in one case - A flat - , major in the other - A natural - , the latter giving the melodic line a Dorian tint). It is with a final echo of the theme of the Grave that the movement dies out in resignation, leaving an impression of something unfinished. The finale would have corrected that impression, but we will never know how, it having never been written. The second movement (A flat major, 6/8, Très calme) - of which the manuscript is dated 1st April 1899 is somewhat reminiscent of the Sicilienne of the Concert, Op. 21 but, unlike the latter, which serves as a scherzo, it is the slow movement and in its very developed central part, achieves singular expressive intensity. One might be tempted to believe in the existence of a ‘hidden programme’, owing to the presence of a literal, absolutely explicit quotation from Siegfried Idyll 5 at the end of this section (fig. 30 in the score). To that is added the fact that the rising chromatic pattern, characteristic of what is called the ‘desire motif’ (Sehnsucht) in Tristan, haunts a large part of the piece. The third movement - of which the beginning of the manuscript is dated 24 May 1899 - is the one that was interrupted by the death of the composer. On page 12 of the notebook in which Chausson was noting down the text, is inserted a sheet of paper with these lines, written - according to the catalogue of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France - in Gustave Samazeuilh’s hand: It is at the spot marked by a cross […] that Chausson interrupted his sketch in June 1899 to go for a bicycle ride with his daughter, during which would occur his tragic, unexplained death. The third piece of the Quartet was completed, at the request of his family, by Vincent 4 5 Quoted by Gallois, op.cit., p. 505. The song mentioned here is Chanson perpétuelle, which we shall come back to later on. See bars 59-61 of Siegfried Idyll (and, at the end of the work, bars 328-331). Only the final chord of the progression is rewritten enharmonically by Chausson: B flat-D-F instead of A sharp-C double sharp-E sharp. Let us point out that the published score of the Quartet (like those of the Concert, Op. 21 and Chanson perpétuelle) can be downloaded on the Web site of the International Music Score Library Project (http://imslp.org/wiki). 15 Livret Saphir LVC 1092:Mise en page 1 02/07/10 17:15 Page16 d’Indy whose writing will be recognised starting at this sign. 6 Jean Gallois, doubtless basing himself on d’Indy’s correspondence, presents things differently: As concerns the Quartet, [Madame Chausson] long refused Vincent d’Indy the right to finish the third movement, wishing to keep the work as was, just as her husband had left it. She ended up giving in to the objections of the author of Fervaal who convinced her […] that no publisher would agree to publish a truncated score - which would surely have condemned the opus 35 forever. 7 Unlike what happened with Lulu, of which, at the time of Berg’s death, there remained only to orchestrate part of the last act, already written down in short-score, in the present case, it was during the composition of the third movement of a work that was supposed to have four that Chausson died accidentally. Even though there exist a few pages of sketches relative to the fourth movement, it was impossible to finish the Quartet, based on them. Only the possibility of ‘completing’ - as Samazeuilh wrote - the unfinished movement could be envisaged. This had been conceived as a Scherzo, manifestly of a tripartite structure (like that of the Piano Quartet) in the key of F minor. After many deletions, Chausson had established the text of 220 bars, which consisted of the initial section - the Scherzo, strictly speaking (3/8, F minor, Gaiement et pas trop vite) -, the middle part - in 2/4 (quaver = quaver), E major (the A flat of the F minor scale changing, at bar 84, into third degree major - written G sharp - of the new scale) 8 -, and a large part of the reprise of the Scherzo 9, which breaks off at the peak of a long, modulating progression, on a harmony of the B flat major dominant. The task was not easy, insofar as the notebook contained no rough draft of the following part of the movement. The solution adopted by d’Indy is nonetheless quite problematic: instead of really ‘completing’ the third movement of the Quartet, he wrote an ending for it as if it were the finale, modulating almost immediately - by means of a highly academic ascending sequence (bar 235) - into the key of C, which would have doubtless been that of the fourth movement, and bringing back the 2/4 of the middle section, which consequently breaks the unity of style of the Scherzo as originally conceived, along with the very balance of the construction (the text composed by d’Indy represents almost a third of the movement) 10. The highly conventional brio of the concluding bars verges on caricature. 6 The spot in question is indicated by an index in the present CD (the third movement thus consists of two tracks). Ibid., p. 519. The marking at this spot in the published score (Le double plus lent, or ‘twice as slow [crotchet = quaver]’) is misleading. Rather than maintaining the quaver = quaver equivalence at the moment of going into 2/4, four bars earlier (bar 80) - in keeping with the lesson of the manuscript - , d’Indy has in fact chosen, quite curiously (Chausson noted under the viola part: soutenu or sostenuto), to have these four bars played once faster, which leads to slowing down as much the speed of the crotchet when the new theme in E major is heard. In the present recording, the Parisii Quartet has, as for other details, followed the autograph manuscript version. 9 This return (bar 173) is expressly indicated by the marking ‘1st tempo, Gaily and not too fast’. 7 8 16 Livret Saphir LVC 1092:Mise en page 1 02/07/10 17:15 Page17 The manuscript of Chanson perpétuelle (in C sharp minor) is dated 10 December 1898. The piece was written just after the first movement of the Quartet 11, and its composition clearly marks a pause in Chausson’s work: the complexity of harmony and rich contrapuntal fabric are replaced here by a pronounced spareness of the sound texture, linked to the search for immediate, almost spontaneous expression (the melody is marked ‘Slow, in the feeling of a folksong’). Here, Chausson sets a poem by Charles Cros, ‘Nocturne’, taken from the collection Le Coffret de santal 12. It is the lament of a woman abandoned by her lover and who is preparing her suicide - blending, in a morbid fantasy, the idea of death with that of voluptuousness (’And the green rushes will enlace me. / And my heaving breast will believe / Under the caress of the entwinement, / that it is submitting to the embrace of he who has left.’). Chausson deleted four of the poem’s 16 tercets - including the last two, preferring to let the singing break on the word absent (‘left’ in the translation), declaimed by the voice, in a pathetic gesture, on a high G sharp, the climax of the whole song - after which the viola and first violin do no more than share, by way of an epilogue, shreds of the initial theme, combined with the evocation of the ‘bien-aimé’ (beloved). In a curious letter written whilst composing the work, Chausson revealed his difficulty in identifying with the character whose music must express the feelings: « Certainly, I feel happier at the moment, just when I am writing a lugubrious song for Madame Raunay! It’s coming along rather well. I don’t understand anything. It is about a violent despair of love. I am not at all in this frame of mind. So what, sincerity? A joke? Or I am preparing myself a trick… Not at all. I’ve found it. I feel the pain I would have if I found myself in that position and I feel it even more because I find myself happier. » 13 Chanson perpétuelle exists in three versions: voice and piano, voice and orchestra, and voice with piano and string quartet; it is the last one, the most frequently played, which is recorded here. It is also in this form that the work was premiered on 28 January 1899 - with great success - by its dedicatee, Jeanne Raunay. Jean-Louis Leleu Translated by John Tyler Tuttle 10 The idea of the reformulation of the theme of the middle section in 5/8, which is abundantly exploited to this end, was manifestly inspired in d’Indy by two bars that Chausson had written then scratched out in what constituted the first draft of the passage where the semiquavers of the theme in question turn into quaver triplets (fig. 41 of the published score). 11 See the letter from late October 1898 quoted above (note 4). 12 ‘Chansons perpétuelles’ (plural) was the title that Cros gave, in the second edition of the collection (1879), to the first series of poems which includes ‘Nocturne’. On this question of title, see Jean Gallois’ remarks (op. cit., p. 506). 13 Quoted by Gallois, op. cit., p. 507. 17 Livret Saphir LVC 1092:Mise en page 1 02/07/10 17:15 Page18 SANDRINE PIAU, SOPRANO A renowned figure in the world of Baroque music, French soprano Sandrine Piau performs regularly with such celebrated conductors as William Christie, Philippe Herreweghe, Christophe Rousset, Gustav Leonhardt, Sigiswald Kuijken, Ton Koopman, René Jacobs, Marc Minkowski, Fabio Biondi, Michel Corboz, Josep Pons and Louis Langrée. That journey would prove decisive, with his meeting Isaac Stern, David Oistrakh, Pierre Fournier and Nadia Boulanger. A few years later, won over by his playing, Zino Francescatti invited him to record Bach’s Concerto for Two Violins with him, for Deutsche Grammophon. In the words of a critic from Le Figaro, ‘his straightforward, full sonority, his scrupulous attention to phrasing, his remarkable technical ease and his overall accuracy and appropriateness’ are qualities that were quickly recognised by orchestras, which invited him as soloist in France and abroad (Japan, United States, Germany, Hungary, Czech Republic…). Régis Pasquier regularly goes on ‘musical world tours’, playing chamber music (and particularly with the Pennetier-Pasquier-Pidoux Trio) as much as with orchestra. A very fine Rachmaninov recording with the Trio, was previously released by Saphir Productions. In the summer of 2009, in addition to numerous festivals in France, Régis Pasquier performed in Canada, Japan, Brazil and Finland. Since 1998, Régis Pasquier plays a magnificent 1734 Joseph Guarnerius (Del Gesù) violin, made in Cremona. 20 Livret Saphir LVC 1092:Mise en page 1 02/07/10 17:15 Page21 PHILIPPE BIANCONI, PIANO Philippe Bianconi’s playing is recognised for ‘always going straight to the heart of the music and filling space with life and poetry’ (Washington Post); ‘extraordinary musicality and technical mastery (The Times); ‘an impressive diversity of colours’, ‘a touch that is both imperious and tender, a perfect sense of sound balance [...] that results in a maximum of emotion’ (Le Figaro). Trained at the Conservatory in Nice by Simone Delbert-Février, then in Paris under the aegis of Gaby Casadesus, Philippe Bianconi then pursued his knowledge of the German and Russian repertoires with Vitalij Margulis. First Prize at the International Young Musicians Competition in Belgrade in 1977 and the Robert Casadesus International Competition in Cleveland (1981), in 1985, he won the Silver Medal at the Van Cliburn International Competition. His first major recital at Carnegie Hall, in 1987, was highly acclaimed. Since then, he has appeared in the most prestigious halls, in America and Europe, as well as in Japan and Australia. Philippe Bianconi has also been the guest of the leading orchestras, including Cleveland, Chicago, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Saint-Louis, Montreal, the Orchestre de Paris and Orchestre National de France, under the direction of such conductors as Lorin Maazel, Kurt Masur, Christoph von Dohnanyi, Marek Janowski, James Conlon, Georges Prêtre, Jeffrey Tate, David Zinman... He has participated in numerous festivals, including La Roque d’Anthéron, ‘la Folle Journée de Nantes’, ‘Piano aux Jacobins’, ‘Piano en Valois’ and Ravinia (Ohio) Festival in the United States. A keen chamber musician, he has performed with Jean-Pierre Rampal, Janos Starker, Pierre Amoyal, Gary Hoffman, Tedi Papavrami, the Sine Nomine and Guarneri String Quartets and Hermann Prey, with whom he recorded Schubert’s three great Lieder cycles: Die schöne Müllerin, Winterreise and Schwanengesang. 21 Livret Saphir LVC 1092:Mise en page 1 02/07/10 17:15 Page22 QUATUOR PARISII, Arnaud VALLIN, first violin Jean-Michel BERRETTE, second violin Dominique LOBET, viola Jean-Philippe MARTIGNONI, cello The members of the QUATUOR PARISII met as students at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, where the quartet was formed in 1981; all four members obtained premiers prix in chamber music at the Conservatoire. The QUATUOR PARISII’s repertoire encompasses all the major Classical and Romantic works for string quartet (Beethoven, Brahms and Webern complete works). In addition they are noted for their Interpretations of the contemporary repertoire, particularly of contemporary French works (Gilbert Amy, Pierre Boulez), Ivan Fedele, Richard Rodney Bennett. 22 Livret Saphir LVC 1092:Mise en page 1 02/07/10 17:15 Page23 The strong complicity between the four musicians has allowed them to take on and constitute a vast repertoire in a sound and style uniquely theirs.Their curiosity and enthusiasm have taken them from Boccherini to contemporary music, as well as major works of Beethoven, Brahms or Webern. The QUATUOR PARISII does not want to confine itself to a specific period or to a specific type of music. Rather the musicians attempt to interweave the different epochs and resonances through their playing. The QUATUOR PARISII doesn’t hesitate to interpret innovative contemporary creations, both French and foreign, among them works by Gilbert Amy, Gérard Pesson, Philippe Boivin, Garcia Roman, Guillaume Connesson and E. Canat de Chizy, that they interpret with a brio widely acclaimed by the critics. Their many recordings show the influence and eclecticism of this formation: Debussy, Ravel (‘fff’ Télérama and ‘Choc’ of le Monde de la Musique), Fauré, Franck, Webern (‘Nouvelle Académie du Disque’ prize ), among them. The recording of Reynaldo Hahn’s chamber music with two string quartets and the world premiere of the Quintet with piano were unanimously hailed by the critics. Their recent recording of Pierre Boulez’s Livre pour Quatuor, and of Darius Milhaud’s 18 string quartets (Grand Prize, Académie Charles Cros), show the audacity of QUATUOR PARISII’s commitment to contemporary composers. Their latest recording, produced by Saphir Productions, illustrates the great variety of Arthur Honegger’s chamber music, through the string quartet and various instruments (flute, harp, oboe bass and voice). This recording received the distinction ‘Diapason Découverte’. Translated by Lisa Boyle 23 Photo © A.
