Avec 568km de parcours chronométré, 250km de liaison, quelques 600
notes sur les 116 pages des road-book des copilotes, l’étape 5 du Silk Way
Rally fut une rude journée. Malgré une voiture #100 désormais attardée,
le Team Peugeot Total se maintient aux avant-postes : deux des trois
équipages figurent aux deux premières places du classement général
provisoire.

Fort d’une expérience grandissante, tant en pilotage qu’en matière de
navigation et lecture du road-book, le duo Cyril DESPRES / David CASTERA a
signé le meilleur chrono sans faire d’erreur. Résultat : une nette victoire
d’étape et la reprise de la 1ere position au classement général.

Les nouveaux leaders sont suivis au classement général par Sébastien LOEB
et Daniel ELENA, 5ème de l’étape du jour après avoir eu, comme beaucoup de
concurrents, des soucis avec la navigation.

Au kilomètre 416, deux dangers consécutifs de niveau 2 et 3 (alerte
maximum) ont entraîné la PEUGEOT 2008 DKR #100 de Stéphane
PETERHANSEL / Jean-Paul COTTRET dans une série de tonneaux. Accusant
de nombreux dommages mécaniques, l’équipage a redoublé d’effort pour
repartir en course et tente actuellement de ramener l’auto au bivouac ;
l’ensemble des techniciens Peugeot Sport les y attendent et sont prêts à
réagir pour qu’ils puissent s’aligner au départ à l’aube demain matin.

« La performance de Cyril et de David est remarquable aujourd’hui. Ils ont réussi à créer
des écarts important grâce à un magnifique sans faute . Malheureusement trois
kilomètres avant le CP3, Stéphane et Jean-Paul ont commis une erreur d’appréciation sur
un danger indiqué dans le road-book. La voiture est lourdement abimée avec des dégâts
sur les suspensions avant gauche et arrière droite. Nous ne savons pas encore si ils seront
capables d’atteindre l’arrivée de la spéciale puisqu’il leur reste environ 150 kilomètres à
parcourir. L’objectif de notre participation au Silk Way Rally est aussi de cumuler les
kilomètres pour tester nos améliorations apportées à la voiture, et nous ferons donc le
maximum pour que Stéphane et Jean-Paul repartent demain. La course est encore
longue. D’autres concurrents auront des problèmes. Nous sommes très satisfaits d’avoir
deux PEUGEOT 2008 DKR aux deux premières positions du classement général. »

« C’est la première fois que je participe à une spéciale aussi longue. C’est du vrai
rallye-raid ! La spéciale était très belle avec beaucoup de changements de rythme
dans la végétation. Ce n’est pas évident à gérer car je dois à chaque fois adapter mon
pilotage. Si on m’avait dit ce matin qu’en partant dixième, nous allions ouvrir la piste
sur les 100 derniers kilomètres, je n’y aurais pas cru. Nous sommes des marathoniens
avec David. Quand l’étape commence à être longue et dure, nous pouvons tirer notre
épingle du jeu. Ça a été le cas aujourd’hui. »
Sébastien LOEB – Étape 5ème / Général 2nd
« Nous étions très bien partis. Nous avons doublé Vasilyev et Stéphane, avant d’ouvrir
la route. Nous avons perdu une douzaine de minutes à jardiner entre deux Way Point,
puis quelques minutes également lorsque nous avons aidé Stéphane à remettre la
voiture sur ses roues. Notre accélérateur s’est bloqué à 100 kilomètres de l’arrivée.
Nous n’avons pas pris de risque ensuite, l’objectif était de finir la spéciale. Nous
faisons le quatrième temps malgré tous ces problèmes. Notre rythme était vraiment
bon. »

Cyril DESPRES recovers the lead as
Stéphane PETERHANSEL hits trouble

With 568km against the clock, 250km of liaison distance and a staggering
600 pace notes across 116 pages in the co-drivers’ road books, Leg 5 of the
Silk Way Rally was a punishing day indeed. Notwithstanding a lengthy
delay for the #100 car, Team Peugeot Total remains in charge at the front
of the field, with its other two crews occupying the top two places in the
overall standings.

Growing daily in confidence and experience – both in terms of driving as well as
navigational skills and road book reading – Cyril DESPRES / David CASTERA
produced a flawless run to post the fastest time of the day. In so doing, they
took a commanding stage victory to reclaim the top spot in the overall
classification.

Their team-mates Sébastien LOEB / Daniel ELENA are in hot pursuit of the new
rally leaders, after setting the fifth-fastest time today. Like many of their
competitors, the French duo encountered a number of navigational issues.

416km into the stage, two consecutive hazards – a level two followed by a
maximum alert level three – sent the PEUGEOT 2008 DKR of Stéphane
PETERHANSEL / Jean-Paul COTTRET into a series of rolls. With the #100 entry
sustaining significant mechanical damage in the incident, its driving crew did
their utmost to rejoin the fray and are currently attempting to get the car back
to the bivouac where Peugeot Sport’s team of technicians are awaiting them
and ready to get to work to allow PETERHANSEL and COTTRET to restart the
rally at the crack of dawn tomorrow.

“Cyril and David’s performance today was simply outstanding. They didn’t put so much
as a wheel out of place, which has enabled them to establish a very solid lead in the
overall standings. Unfortunately, just three kilometres before CP3, Stéphane and JeanPaul made an error of judgment at a hazard that was marked in the road book. The car
suffered significant damage, particularly to the front-left and rear-right suspension. We
still don’t know if they will be able to make it to the end of the stage, because they still
have approximately 150km to go. One of the objectives behind our participation in the
Silk Way Rally is to put miles on the board so we can test the improvements we have
made to the car, so we will do everything within our power to allow Stéphane and JeanPaul to re-start tomorrow. There is still a long way to go in this rally, and other crews
will similarly run into difficulties. We are extremely satisfied to have two PEUGEOT
2008 DKRs at the top of tonight’s order.”

“This is the first time I have competed on such a long stage – this is real cross-country
rallying! It was an exciting challenge, with plenty of changes of rhythm in the
vegetation. That wasn’t easy to manage, because each one requires you to adapt your
driving style accordingly. If you’d told me this morning that having set out in tenth
position, we would be running first on the road for the final 100 kilometres, I would
never have believed it. David and I are both marathon men, so we really come into our
own on long, demanding stages like the one today.”

“We began the day in good shape, passing [Vladimir] Vasilyev and Stéphane to run first
on the road and we settled into a strong rhythm, but then we dropped around 12
minutes when we got stuck between two Way Points and we conceded further time
when we stopped to help Stéphane get his car back onto its wheels. As if that wasn’t
enough, our throttle then stuck open 100 kilometres from the end of the stage! We took
no further risks after that, with the goal being simply to get to the finish and despite all
of those issues, we still set the fourth-quickest time.”

Tomorrow marks the final leg before the rest day and the rally’s arrival in China). It
takes the form of two timed sections of respectively 111km and 224km, linked by an
intermediate liaison stretch. The first stage to feature sand, the total distance to cover
will be 848km.
