To His Excellency Thoas.. Carlton Govr..Capt.. Genl.. And
Commdr.. in Chief in and over the Province of New
Brunswick and the Teritoreys There on Depending
Chanceler and Vice Admal.. of the Same &c&c &c
The Humble Memorial of Zimri Armstrong most Humbly
Shewe\th/ That Haveing agreed with Saml.. Jarvis in
Stanford in Connecticut in new England that the aforesaid
Sam.l Jarvis for and in the Consideration of my Serving him
for the space of two Years, did bind him self to me that he
would purchase my wife \and family/ and pay my passage
hear to this province and after my being free was to set me
up at my trade
Zimri Armstrong déclare que Samuel Jarvis, de Stanford, au
Connecticut, a fait une promesse à Armstrong selon laquelle, si ce
dernier acceptait de travailler pour lui pendant deux ans, Jarvis
achèterais la femme et les enfants d’Armstrong, qui sont des
esclaves, et payerait leur voyage au Nouveau-Brunswick. En plus,
Jarvis établirait un commerce pour Armstrong à la fin de la
période de deux ans.
when I Came to this province the aforesaid Sam.l Jarvis sold
his land and went back to the states having left me destitute
of both Cloaths and provisions in a Strange Country to
provide for my self after my being sick neither Sam.l Jar\v/is
nor either of this brothers gave me the vallue of one penny to
support me when I was not able to supp\ort/.myself and now
is gon back and sold my wife and family now John Jarvis
demands me as his in behalf of his broth-er to serve out my
time which is almost expired

Après l’arrivée d’Armstrong au Nouveau-Brunswick, Jarvis vend
ses terres et retourne aux États-Unis, laissant Armstrong démuni.
Jarvis a aussi l’intention de vendre la femme et les enfants
d’Armstrong. De plus, John Jarvis, le frère de Samuel Jarvis,
insiste qu’Armstrong travaille pour lui jusqu’à la fin de la période
de deux ans, pour respecter le contrat de deux ans qu’il a conclu
avec Samuel Jarvis. Ni John ni ses autres frères n’apporte de
l’aide quand Samuel devient malade.

I went to Mr leanerd esquire to demand my provisions of the
aforesaid Jno.. Jarvis when his worship was pleased to send a
warrant for him and when he Came there he told Mr leonerd
that his Brother Sam.l Jarvis was to be here within the space
of six weeks of wich he was willing to take his oath before
M.r Leonerd when I Contended my self for a while //when I
was at last Credibly informd that Saml .. Jarvis had sold my
wife and family when I again went to Mr leonerd and he then
ownd before mr leonerd that his brother had Sold them
Armstrong présente sa cause à un avocat, M. Leonard, qui donne
à John Jarvis un mandat pour assurer les provisions que le
gouvernement garantit à la famille Armstrong, mais que la famille
n’a jamais reçu de la part des frères Jarvis.
John Jarvis jure solennellement que Samuel Jarvis reviendra au
Nouveau-Brunswick dans six semaines pour traiter de la question,
mais, entretemps, Samuel Jarvis vend la famille d’Armstrong.

I never got my provisions or any likely hoods of my getting
Clearance of him he have stopt my provisions till I went to
mr Knox who gave me an order for to draw it// before I went
to mr Knox he went to to the Capt of the Campy that I did
belong to to draw my provision for himself but Capt..
Whitmore refused to give it to him til he got an order I have
drawn some flower and the meat I can get & when I go to
Capt Whitmore Since I Came hear I have drawd neither land
or Cloaths being allmost naked for them alltho that Sam.l
Jarvis according to agreament never gave me any nor his
Brother
Jn Jarvis who now keeps me if your excellency will grant me
my {unclear: me} petition that is to let me know weather he
Can help me or kno if not as I Can produce the paper about
our agreement between me and Saml.. Jarvis and as I Can
bring proof of what is here enserted by Credible people in
this town and if there is any land to spare to grant me some
as well as other indigent loyalists I shall be in duty bound
and ever pray for your excellency health and prosperity.
Armstrong ne reçoit pas des provisions de la part de Samuel
Jarvis, qui aurait reçu des provisions au nom de son serviteur, et
Armstrong doit toujours acquitter de ses obligations en vertu du
contrat, ce qui fait qu’il ne peut pas obtenir ses provisions
directement du gouvernement. Armstrong fait appel donc au
capitaine de son régiment, John Wetmore, et ensuite à Thomas
Knox, qui est chargé de la distribution ordonnée des provisions.
Armstrong peut enfin obtenir de la farine et de la viande. Depuis
son arrivée dans la colonie, il n’a reçu ni terres ni habits. Ni
Samuel ni son frère n’a honoré les obligations contractuelles
envers Armstrong.
Armstrong demande à Carleton si ce dernier peut l’aider et lui dit qu’il
peut lui montrer l’entente écrite entre lui et Samuel Jarvis, que Jarvis
n’a jamais respecté. Armstrong demande des terres pour lui-même et
d’autres Loyalistes indigents.
