Press release The article awarded by the EOS prize 2011 presents a high-efficiency monolithic three-grating phasemask aiming at printing gratings of relatively large period which can not be printed by conventional phase-masks because the interferogram they create contains a plurality of spatial frequencies. According to a spatial frequency heterodyne scheme, the central grating splits the exposure beam into its first orders in the phase-mask substrate, then the –1st order of the two side-gratings folds the two beams back toward each other in the transmission medium where they form a purely single frequency interferogram, this frequency being twice the spatial frequency difference between the splitting and folding gratings. This architecture breaks the upper limit of the period range printable by usual phase-masks and widely extends the applicability of phase-mask lithography. The demonstration is made of the printing of a 2 m period grating by means of a phase-mask incorporated in a “write on the fly” scheme aiming at very long, and possible very wide gratings provided the phase-mask can be made wide enough. The realization of the phase-mask and its application to large grating printing is the result of a tight cooperation between the Hubert Curien Laboratory UMR CNRS 5516 (LaHC), Lyon University at SaintEtienne, and the University of Eastern Finland (UEF), Joensuu, within the European Network of Excellence NEMO on microoptics. This achievement is a combination of the astute experimental and prototyping lithography of LaHC and of the strong technological potential and skills of UEF with the contribution of Tampere University for the deposition of the needed high index layers.
