Né en 1984 en Californie, Nick Cortese vit et travaille à New York.
«Je pense que les références les plus contemporaines que j’avais en rentrant a l’université se limitaient
à Gerhard Richter et Andy Warhol. J’ai tenté d’être interdisciplinaire en étudiant la sculpture, la vidéo, la
peinture, la gravure. Mais, malgré toutes les rhétoriques Marxistes structuralistes, poststructuralistes et
postmodernes que j’ai pu ingurgiter, je finissais toujours par faire du dessin et de la peinture. Un constat
évident concernant mes dessins est qu’ils sont remplis de chosesreconnaissables, et j’espère que les
objets présents interagiront. Mes œuvres partagent toutes des thèmes et des symboles analogues :
dense superposition, cimetières, villes, immenses vides noirs, caricatures de visages mélancoliques larmoyants et clichés de formes modernistes «abstraites». Même si l’analogie a tendance à tout niveler, je
ne peux pas dire que je sois indifférent aux objets que je met dans mes dessins. Il s’agit du nivellement
de l’indifférence des choses, trop de choses à coucher sur la feuille. La surface est primordiale pour
moi, parce que je crois qu’un dessin ne peut vivre nulle part ailleurs qu’à la surface des choses (...). Il a
la capacité à rassembler espaceset surfaces ; qui seraient autrement incompatibles.»

«I think that the most contemporary references I had when I went to college in New York were Gerhard
Richter and Andy Warhol. I tried to be interdisciplinary: I took sculpture classes and video classes and
painting classes and printmaking classes, but even after all the Marxist, structuralist, post-structuralist,
and post-modern rhetoric I could stomach, I still ended up making paintings and drawings. One obvious statement about my drawings is that they are full of recognizable things, and my hope is that the
things in different drawings will draw lines association with one another. The drawings all share analogous themes and symbols: dense layering, graveyards, cities, large black voids, caricatures of weepy
melancholic faces, and clichés of modernist “abstract” shapes. Although analogy has a tendency to
level everything, I do not want to say that I am indifferent to what I put in my drawings. They are about
leveling the indifference of stuff, too much stuff to even put in one drawing. «Surface is paramount for
me, because I don’t think that a drawing can live anywhere but on the surface of things, (... ) it has the
capacity to bring together, in a non-disjunctive way, conceptions of space and surfaces that would be
otherwise incompatible.»
