Die Kelten sind das erste namentlich bekannte Volk
nördlich der Alpen. Im 5.–3. Jahrhundert v.Chr. ist keltische Kultur
von den Britischen Inseln bis nach Italien und von Frankreich
bis nach Bulgarien verbreitet. Keltische Kunst beginnt um 700 v.Chr.
und entwickelt sich im Austausch mit etruskischer und griechischer
Kunst zu eigenständiger Form.
Wie hat sich der typische keltische Kunststil entwickelt? Welches
sind die historischen Hintergründe für diesen ersten Beitrag
des Nordens an die europäische Kunstgeschichte?
Zum ersten Mal widmet sich eine Ausstellung der Kunst der Kelten
von ihren Anfängen in Mitteleuropa bis zu ihrem Ausklang in Irland
um 700 n.Chr.

le nom est connu au nord des Alpes. Dès 700 avant J.C., ils vont
développer leur propre génie artistique tout en procédant
à des échanges avec les arts grecs et étrusques.
Du Ve au IIIe siècle avant J.C., la culture celte va s’étendre
des Îles britanniques à l’Italie et de la France à la Bulgarie.
Comment ce style typiquement celte s’est-il développé ? Dans quel
contexte historique cette première contribution de l’Europe du Nord
à l’histoire de l’art a-t-elle eu lieu ?
Pour la première fois, une exposition est consacrée à l’art des Celtes,
de ses débuts au centre de l’Europe à son crépuscule en Irlande,
vers 700 après J.C.

The Celts are the first people north of the Alps to be
known by name. Celtic culture spread from the British Isles to Italy,
from France to Bulgaria, between the 5th and 3rd century BC.
Celtic art began around 700 BC C and developed into an original art
form in exchange with Etruscan and Greek art.
How did the typical Celtic style of art develop? What are the historical
backgrounds to this first major contribution of the North to the history
of European art?
For the first time an exhibition is being dedicated to the “Art of
the Celts” from its origins in Central Europe to its final flowering
in Ireland around AD 700.

Rund um die Ausstellung
Als besondere Attraktion wird im Museumspark eine Keltenschmiede
aufgebaut. Während der ganzen Ausstellungsdauer werden hier die berühmte
keltische Liege aus dem Fürstengrab in Hochdorf nachgeschmiedet
und historische Arbeitsvorgänge gezeigt.
Mit Unterstützung der pädagogischen Hochschule PHBern.
Im Zusammenhang mit der Ausstellung präsentiert das Stadttheater Bern
Vincent d’Indys Wagnerisme-Oper «Fervaal» nach einem keltischen Sagenstoff.

Autour de l’exposition
Le Parc du Musée propose notamment une forge celtique durant toute la durée
de l’exposition, où l’on reconstitue le célèbre divan celte trouvé dans la tombe
princière de Hochdorf, afin de montrer comment cela se faisait à l’époque.
Avec le concours de la Haute école pédagogique PHBern.
En relation avec l’exposition, le Stadttheater Bern présente « Fervaal », un opéra
wagnérien de Vincent d’Indys composé sur la trame d’une légende celtique.

Historischen Museums Bern zeigt auf über 1200m2
eine exquisite Auswahl von rund 450 keltischen
Kunstschätzen aus ganz Europa.
Installée dans la nouvelle extension du Musée Historique
de Berne, l’exposition présente, sur plus de 1200 m2,
un choix de quelque 450 trésors d’art celtique
provenant de toute l’Europe.
The exhibition in the new extension of the Historisches
Museum in Bern is showing an exquisite selection
of some 450 Celtic art treasures from all over Europe
in an area covering 1200 sq. m.
Prachtvoller Schmuck und reich verzierte Gebrauchsgegenstände
aus Bronze, Eisen, Silber und Gold, kostbare Grabbeigaben und
kultische Objekte mit komplizierten Mustern oder Darstellungen
fantastischer Wesen zeugen vom meisterlichen Kunstschaffen
der Kelten.
De superbes bijoux, des objets de la vie quotidienne aux riches
décors, en bronze, en fer, en argent et en or, des trouvailles
funéraires, des objets de culte au motifs complexes, ou encore
des représentations d’êtres fabuleux, sont autant de témoins
de la créativité et de la maîtrise artistiques des Celtes.
Magnificent jewellery and richly decorated utilitarian objects made
from bronze, iron, silver and gold, precious grave goods and cult
objects with complex patterns or representations of fantastic beings
testify to the masterly artistic creation achieved by the Celts.
Modernste Ausstellungstechnik macht den Aufbau der komplexen
und oft rätselhaften Ornamentik der Objekte verständlich.
Im Dialog mit Zeugnissen der klassischen Antike werden Motivund Stilentwicklung erlebbar gemacht.
Les techniques d’exposition les plus modernes permettent
de présenter la décoration complexe et parfois mystérieuse
des objets. Les évolutions des styles et des motifs sont racontés
de manière vivante en les confrontant aux témoins
de l’Antiquité classique.

The most up-to-date exhibition techniques help to elucidate the
structure of the complex and often puzzling ornamental schemes
of the artefacts. The development of motifs and style is explained
in dialogue with the testimonies of classical antiquity.

Around the exhibition
A Celtic smithy will be built in the Museum Park as a special attraction.
Throughout the whole duration of the exhibition a replica of the famous couch
from the Celtic chieftain’s grave at Hochdorf will be forged and historic metalworking processes shown.
