L’île de Guernesey est une dépendance de
la couronne britannique dans la Manche,
au large des côtes françaises. Avec
Jersey, Aurigny, Sercq, Herm, Jéthou et
d’autres petites îles, elles forment
l’archipel des îles Anglo-normandes.

du 19ème siècle abritant un musée d’épaves
qui se sont échouées sur les côtes de

Un illustre habitant
Victor Hugo, né le 26 février 1802 à
Besançon, était poète et dramaturge,
considéré comme l'un des plus importants
écrivains de langue française au XIXe siècle.
Lors du coup d'Etat de Napoléon III, le 2
décembre 1851, Victor Hugo s'exile à
Bruxelles, puis à Jersey avec sa famille et
Juliette Drouet, sa maîtresse, qu’il aura
remarquée en 1833 lorsqu’elle jouait une
pièce de théâtre. Depuis ce jour, Juliette
suivra le poète dans tous ses voyages. Lors de
son aventure à Jersey, il écrira 98 poèmes
qui expriment sa colère contre Napoléon III
puis, en 1855, il sera chassé de l’île pour avoir
critiqué la reine Victoria. Après Jersey, il
s’installera à Guernesey, une île plus petite et
plus sauvage, dans sa maison Hauteville House
où il vivra jusqu'à ce qu’il apprenne la
capitulation de Napoléon III en 1870. Ce
jour- là, il rentrera en France après 19 ans
d’exil. Il mourra le 22 mai 1885 à l’âge de 83
ans, à Paris.

Le personnage principal est Juliet Ashton une écrivaine anglaise qui publie des livres
et articles pendant l’occupation allemande.
Résumé de l’histoire
Juliet Ashton est à la recherche d'une idée pour son livre, quand
elle reçoit un jour à Londres la lettre d'un inconnu venant de l’île
de Guernesey .Elle va découvrir l'existence du cercle littéraire
des amateurs d'épluchures de patates et faire connaissance avec
les membre du groupe au fil d'une correspondance suivie. Une fois
arrivée à Guernesey, elle va apprendre une triste nouvelle au
sujet d’Élisabeth et se prendre d’affection pour Kit, la fille d’Élisabeth.

Ce livre est sorti le 6 Novembre 2001, son succès a été total aux États-Unis et en
France. Il donne envie de visiter l'île.
Mon opinion
J'ai trouvé ce roman très intéressant car les personnages du livre sont courageux
après que leur île fut habitée par l'occupation allemande. L'histoire des personnages
est très différente, ainsi que leurs façons de vivre, mais leur point commun est « Le
cercle littéraire des amateurs d'épluchures de patates».

What about English?
Mr Beltoise : He likes English a little but he is not very good at English . He has
already been to England twice. He tries to speak English and naturally he speaks
French.
Mr Anglade : He loves English, English music , the English spirit and humor but
he hates English food. He is very bad at English although he tries y “ to speak
better than a Spanish cow”. He has already been to London three times and only
once in Ireland. He speaks little English, a few words in German, Greek and is
fluent in French of course!
And their experiences ?
Mr Beltoise: When he was a little boy, he liked math. Now he is the head
teacher of our secondary school in Langeais. Before that he was a deputy head
and even before he was a Technology teacher.
Mr Anglade: When he was a little boy he liked History, Geography, Sports and
English. Now he is the deputy head of our school and before he was a history
and geography teacher.

Geography :
The island is located between France and
England. Jersey is the largest of the Channel
Islands. Its capital is Saint Hélier. The island is
a dependency of the British Crown. It is
governed by Queen Elizabeth II. The
Lieutenant Governor is John MacColl.
Its area is 116 km2 and there are 97 857
inhabitants.
The money used is the Jersey Pound.
Food specialties :
Not only seafood is a specialty of the region, as
well as the nier butter, which is apple syrup,
the pais au fou, which is bean soup, the
mervelles, which are donuts, but also Jersey
milk and bread.
After the coup of Louis Napoleon Bonaparte in
1851, Victor Hugo was exiled to Jersey where
he lived from 1852 to 1855. Mont Orgueil
Castle is located at the southeast end of the
island next to the town of Gorey. It was built in
the thirteenth century as a defense to the
island. The castle served as a prison until the
construction of the prison in Saint Hélier.
There are War Tunnels in Jersey which tell
the true story of the Occupation of Jersey
during World War II. They are one of the most
popular tourist attractions of the island.

trip to Jersey from 18 to 23 May 2013. We will
tell you all about it when we return!
Touch of humor :
Jersey people are nicknamed the toads because
many of them can be found on the island.
