Patrice Burger is the director of the French NGO CARI
dedicated to drylands development and agroecology.
CARI is a member of the French NGOs Coordination Sud.
CARI seeks to promote the participation of civil society in
the development process, especially in the context of
multilateral environmental agreements. CARI leads the
Working Group on Desertification in France and
coordinates a network of NGOs dedicated to the safeguard
of the oasis in the Maghreb (RADDO) and coordinates a
coalition of NGO platforms (RESAD) in Niger, Mali and
Burkina Faso.
Patrice Burger has an experience of over twenty years in
rural development in sub-Saharan Africa and the Maghreb.
Involved since 1996 in the implementation of the United
Nations Convention to combat desertification he has collaborated with various institution and
CSOs stakeholders. He has been designated as the spokesman for the civil society in the highlevel event on desertification at the General Assembly of the United Nations in 2011.
He is a member of the Board of Directors of the intergovernmental organization Observatory
of the Sahara and Sahel (OSS). Since 2007, Patrice Burger represents CARI within the
Drynet international network that represents an organized force of the civil society in the
Convention to Combat Desertification and has to his credit several successes in terms of
action on the ground or advocacy.
In September 2013 Patrice Burger was elected as chair of the Drynet network.

Patrice Burger est le directeur de l’ONG française CARI dédiée au développement des
zones arides et à l’agroécologie.
Il est membre du collectif des ONG françaises Coordination Sud. Le CARI cherche à
promouvoir la participation de la société civile dans les processus du développement, en
particulier dans le cadre des accords multilatéraux de l’environnement. Le CARI anime le
Groupe de Travail Désertification en France et coordonne un réseau d’ONG dédié à la
sauvegarde des oasis au Maghreb (RADDO) et une coalition de plateformes d’ONG (ReSad)
du Niger, du Mali et du Burkina Faso.
Patrice Burger cumule une expérience de plus de vingt années dans le développement rural
en Afrique sub saharienne et au Maghreb. Impliqué depuis 1996 dans le suivi de la
Convention des Nations Unies de lutte contre la désertification, il a collaboré avec les
différents responsables. Il a été désigné comme le porte-parole de la société civile lors de
l’événement de haut niveau sur la désertification à l’Assemblée Générale des Nations Unies
de 2011.
Il est membre du conseil d’administration de l’organisation inter gouvernementale
Observatoire du Sahara et du Sahel. (OSS) Depuis 2007, Patrice Burger représente le CARI
au sein du réseau international Drynet qui représente une force de proposition organisée de la
société civile au sein de la Convention désertification et qui compte à son actif plusieurs
succès en termes d’action de terrain ou de plaidoyer.
En septembre 2013, Patrice Burger a été élu comme président de ce réseau.
