The Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra seeks an experienced, ambitious, talented, and self-motivated individual
to join the organization in the role of
CONCERTMASTER
and
VIOLIN of the ATLANTIC STRING QUARTET
Auditions will be held in St. John’s, NL during the 2014/15 season.
A maximum of four shortlisted candidates will be invited to play one Masterworks concert,
one Sinfonia (chamber orchestra) concert and a Recital with the members of the Atlantic String Quartet.

Audition is open to Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents of Canada. The list of required repertoire will be made available
upon application.
Situated on the eastern edge of North America, the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra completes the network of Canadian
orchestras - from Pacific to Atlantic. It is the only orchestra and largest arts organization in Newfoundland and Labrador and is by
far the largest employer of professional musicians in the province.
About the Atlantic String Quartet- members of the ASQ include violinist Nancy Case-Oates, violist Kate Read, and cellist Theo
Weber. They are the principal string players in the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra (NSO) and the resident string quartet of the
NSO. The ASQ performs four separate and distinct recitals each season and often performs larger chamber works with local and
visiting artists. Additional income may be earned from freelancing and private teaching.
The NSO exists to help make Newfoundland and Labrador a better place in which to live by fostering the art of orchestral musicmaking, maintaining the ideals of artistic integrity, leadership, and excellence, through a comprehensive program of concert and
educational activities which satisfies audiences of all levels as well as the needs of professional, amateur, and student musicians.
With an annual budget of approximately $1.2M, the NSO is a semi-professional community-based orchestra. The Music Director is
Marc David. The Board of Directors consists of twenty-three community leaders and is led by Heather McKinnon. Each season the
orchestra presents Masterworks, Sinfonia, Recital, and Pops concert series as well as a Gala, Silver Ball, and two performances of
Handel’s Messiah.

À l’extrémité est de l’Amérique du Nord, le Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra complète le réseau des orchestres
canadiens, du Pacifique à l’Atlantique. Il est le seul orchestre et la plus grande organisation artistique de TerreNeuve-et-Labrador, et de loin le plus important employeur de musiciens professionnels de la province.
En ce qui concerne l’Atlantic String Quartet, il est composé de la violoniste Nancy Case-Oates, de l’altiste Kate Read
et du violoncelliste Theo Weber, qui sont les principaux musiciens sur instruments à cordes du Newfoundland
Symphony Orchestra (NSO) et du quatuor à cordes résident du NSO. L’ASQ présente quatre récitals distincts par
saison, en plus d’interpréter souvent des œuvres pour orchestre de chambre de plus grande envergure avec des
artistes invités. Les musiciens peuvent aussi se faire un revenu d’appoint par du travail à la pige et des cours
particuliers.
Le NSO a pour vocation d’enrichir la qualité de vie à Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador par la présentation de concerts de
musique orchestrale, la promotion des idéaux d’intégrité artistique, de leadership et d’excellence et la planification
d’un programme exhaustif de concerts et d’activités éducatives qui satisfont les auditoires de tous les niveaux ainsi
que les besoins des musiciens professionnels, amateurs et étudiants.
Doté d’un budget annuel d’environ 1,2 million de dollars, le NSO est un orchestra communautaire semiprofessionnel placé sous la direction musicale de Marc David. Le conseil d’administration, sous la présidence de
Heather McKinnon, est composé de 23 dirigeants de la collectivité. Chaque saison, l’orchestre présente les séries
Masterworks, Sinfonia, Recital et Pops ainsi qu’un Gala, un Silver Ball et deux représentations du Messie d’Haendel.
