YAMAMOTO, MOORE WRAP UP FRANCOPHONIE MEETING
VANCOUVER – The annual meeting of the Ministerial Conference on the Canadian
Francophonie, co-chaired by the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and
Official Languages, and the Honourable Naomi Yamamoto, British Columbia’s Minister of State
for Intergovernmental Relations, concluded with a willingness to promote the Francophonie
during the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
Accordingly, the Ministerial Conference also supported the proposal by British
Columbia, in the context of the Games, to declare February 13, 2010 Canadian Francophonie
Day.
“Francophones from across Canada—be they athletes, coaches, artists or volunteers—
will all contribute to making the Games a unifying event in a typically Canadian fashion”, said
the Honourable Naomi Yamamoto.
Minister Moore reiterated the Government of Canada’s commitment to hosting Games
that will reflect our two official languages, and he highlighted the collaboration of the provincial
and territorial governments in that regard.
The Ministerial Conference also announced that it will partner in the organization of a
day-long session dedicated to Francophone immigration to be held on March 18, 2010 in
Montreal as part of the 12th National Metropolis Conference. This event will be an occasion for
the Conference, governments and various stakeholders to share best practices.
“The Government of Canada is pleased to contribute to this initiative. With the Roadmap
for Canada’s Linguistic Duality, which addresses immigration issues among other things, and the
actions taken to ensure the place of French in the Olympic Games, we are dedicating
unprecedented resources to the promotion of official languages,” said Minister Moore. “This
strengthening of intergovernmental relationships and partnerships illustrates our government’s
leadership on Canadian Francophonie.”
Ministers accepted an invitation from Jackson Lafferty, Minister Responsible for Official
Languages in the Northwest Territories, who will be hosting the next Conference, in Yellowknife
and Behchoko, on June 22 and 23, 2010.
The Ministerial Conference on the Canadian Francophonie was created in 1994 and
includes the federal, provincial and territorial ministers responsible for the Canadian
Francophonie. The ministers meet annually to deal with various issues related to the Canadian
Francophonie, to provide direction for intergovernmental cooperation and to perform a unifying
role in support of the Canadian Francophonie.

DEUX RENDEZ-VOUS POUR LA PROMOTION DE LA FRANCOPHONIE
CANADIENNE
Vancouver, le 24 septembre 2009 – À l’issue de sa rencontre annuelle, co-présidée par
l’honorable James Moore, ministre du Patrimoine canadien et des Langues officielles du Canada,
et l’honorable Naomi Yamamoto, ministre d’État aux Affaires intergouvernementales de la
Colombie-Britannique, la Conférence ministérielle sur la francophonie canadienne entend
promouvoir la francophonie lors des Jeux olympiques et paralympiques d’hiver de 2010 à
Vancouver.
Elle a ainsi appuyé la proposition de la Colombie-Britannique de faire du 13 février 2010
la Journée de la francophonie canadienne dans le cadre des Jeux.
« Les francophones de partout au pays, qu’ils soient athlètes, entraîneurs, artistes,
bénévoles, contribueront à faire des Jeux un évènement rassembleur à l’image du Canada »,
a déclaré l’honorable Naomi Yamamoto.
Le ministre Moore a réitéré l’engagement du gouvernement du Canada de tenir des Jeux
qui reflètent nos deux langues officielles et a souligné la collaboration des gouvernements
provinciaux et territoriaux à cet égard.
Par ailleurs, la Conférence ministérielle a annoncé qu’elle sera partenaire dans
l’organisation d’une journée consacrée à l’immigration francophone le 18 mars 2010 à Montréal
dans le cadre du XIIe Congrès national de Metropolis. Cet évènement permettra à la Conférence,
aux gouvernements et aux divers intervenants de ce secteur de partager des pratiques
exemplaires.
« Le gouvernement du Canada est heureux de contribuer à cette initiative, avec la Feuille
de route pour la dualité linguistique canadienne, qui traite notamment des questions
d’immigration, et les mesures prises pour assurer la place du français aux Jeux olympiques, nous
consacrons des ressources sans précédent en matière de promotion des langues officielles, a
rappelé le ministre Moore. En ce sens, le renforcement des relations et des partenariats
intergouvernementaux illustre le leadership de notre gouvernement en matière de francophonie
canadienne. »
Les ministres ont accepté l’invitation de M. Jackson Lafferty, ministre responsable des
langues officielles des Territoires du Nord-Ouest qui accueillera la prochaine Conférence à
Yellowknife et Behchoko les 22 et 23 juin 2010.
La Conférence ministérielle sur la francophonie canadienne a été créée en 1994 et
regroupe les ministres fédéral, provinciaux et territoriaux responsables de la francophonie
canadienne. Ces ministres se réunissent annuellement afin de traiter de diverses questions liées à
la francophonie canadienne, d’orienter des actions de coopération intergouvernementale et
d’exercer un rôle rassembleur en appui à la francophonie canadienne.
