We had been waiting for it for a long time. Since we’d left the motorway, in fact. For the kids the search had
been like an all-night safari. And then, finally, we saw it. Going down in the opposite direction towards the
valley, capped with a thick layer of snow, the car with meringue on the roof. A promise that the snow was out
there, abundant, stretching as far as the eye could see. On the ski-slopes, and covering the roofs, and streets
of Morzine and Avoriaz, so we could ski directly from the door of our chalet to the ski lifts.

I love to get away from it all. To get off the beaten track. Pretend to get lost – and grab a few
moments of eternity. I love contemplation, making the most of nature, filling my lungs with fresh
air, rediscovering the childhood pleasure of savouring a snowflake like a delicious sweet. That’s
where I get back to who I truly am. To forget time, just for a moment. And listen to the whisper
of the big white spruces.

before Arrival
Nineteen. Twenty. Twenty-one. Twenty-two. The "last pylon before arrival" sign soon warns you that the end is
nigh. By now I should have got used to it and not even notice it any more and yet seeing the sign always has
the same effect on me. My throat tightens and I feel a little excited. Instinctively, I sit up straighter in my seat,
like when the curtain rises at the theatre. A curtain which opens onto the Portes du Soleil. A stage where the
ski-slopes run for hundreds of miles. How am I going to play it this time down? Flat out at 200kms an hour?
Carefully? Out of time. The ski-lift bar is up. I’ll just have to improvise.

After a day spent travelling up and gliding and riding down - after a day you finish bombed out, exhausted and famished… the reward is there, on a wooden table in a comfortable chalet. The flavour of the chocolate,
the sliced French loaf with its snow-white inside – go for it! As soon as you spread it on, the jam starts to
slide on the ski-shaped loaf slice, waxed with salty butter. I squeeze the edges together. The bilberry backsides in its half pipe and slowly starts to slide, whetting my appetite. I observe. I commit. I bite.
he 7.30 in the morning smile
7.25am. he sun is struggling up. One of
my favourite moments. The street’s a little
misty, just like me. I walk through the
village. A couple of night birds going
home, a trail guard going to work.
he squelchy crunch of the snow
underfoot… a few more steps and I open
the baker’s door. «Ding». My second
wake-up call. A hot-bread smell that
tells me the day is off to a good start.
And then

wife’s smile. Simple and sincere.

7.30am. he sun is up.
Stretched out on my back. My body still, my eyes half-closed, I let myself go. The soft movement of the hands,
a hint of Jasmine. I yield to the scent. My spirit vagabonds towards other savours. The mulled wine when
we arrived. Pine logs in the fireplace. Heady flavours of Savoie cake. So I close my eyes again and flee the
world. Here, moments are exquisite and I grab all I can.

Hands
of the
potter
I would spend hours in the studio, just watching
the hands of the potter. When they place a lump of
clay on the wheel, when they shape and smooth it,
applying subtle finger pressure to create a bowl or
a jug. You can easily imagine that the whole village
was made on the wheel. Skilfully and delicately. The
openwork balconies, the carved stone lintels and
the cut slates all murmur that the spirit of Morzine
in bygone years is unchanged.
