Shopping is one of the main motivations for a city break in Paris and with good reason.
As the European capital for shopping, fashion and design, Paris has some 17,000 shops
— including 5,500 in the ready-to-wear sector alone. With major department stores,
iconic luxury brands and famous shopping districts, Paris is an amazing shopping
destination 365 days a year.
Historically, Paris has always been a major reference for fashion and luxury, and all the
major international brands have a flagship store here.
NEW TRENDS, NEW ADDRESSES

New shops with eye-catching layouts open in Paris every week. Top brands are well
aware that the French capital remains a sought-after shopping destination.
Several famous brands have chosen the Marais to open new stores showcasing their
menswear lines. The historic district has been gradually revitalized over the past
several years, and 2015 saw some major changes in the streets around the BHV Marais,
in the southern part of the neighbourhood. Some years ago, the department store
opened its menswear department, BHV/Marais L’Homme, on Rue de la Verrerie, a short
distance from the main building. The BHV’s former warehouse on Rue des Archives has
since been revamped, and now houses designer fashion for men from Gucci, Fendi,
Givenchy, Valentino Homme and Moncler. Hipster-chic brand The Kooples and Sandro
Homme also opened stores in the same street in the latter half of 2015.
So the Right Bank is turning into a new hub for men’s fashion. But there was good news
for style-conscious women too in 2015. The mega-talented designer Olympia Le-Tan –
renowned for her funky, one-off handbags and accessories, often toted by celebrities –
finally opened her own store, in a covered passage next to the Palais Royal. Another
designer whose work often features in on the pages of Vogue, Sylvia Toledano, opened
her new boutique showcasing her trademark clutches and jewellery studded with
precious stones next to Place Vendôme.
An iconic name in fashion has opened a boutique in the Golden Triangle: Vionnet. This
haute couture house set up in 1912 closed its last store 30 years ago, but is now making
a comeback with fashion visionary Hussein Chalayan at the helm. The boutique on Rue
François 1er is a stone’s throw from Madeleine Vionnet’s original atelier on Avenue
Montaigne. A new vitality also marks Cacharel, the legendary 1960s brand known for its
romantic, ultra-feminine styles. Seven years after the closure of its last Paris store, the
label is opening two new boutiques in Paris in the first quarter of 2016, in the Opéra
district and in Saint-Germain-des-Prés. French designer Daniel Hechter has also set up
in Paris, with a new flagship on Avenue de l’Opéra stocking mainly menswear but also
some women’s clothing and lingerie.
Another trend is the growing popularity of American fashion brands, following the fad
for gourmet burgers, with restaurants cropping up all over the city. Five of the biggest
names in American fashion have opened stores in the French capital. Ready-to-wear
brand J. Crew now has a shop in the Marais – good news for Paris fans of the preppy
chic label (reputedly one of Michelle Obama’s favourites). Tommy Hilfiger has opened
a new flagship in a huge building owned by a French bank on Boulevard des Capucines.
The 750 m2 store in the heart of the Madeline-Opéra district is the brand’s second
retail outlet in Paris, after the existing one on the Champs-Elysées. Tory Burch, the
iconic American brand, has picked the elegant Rue Saint-Honoré in the 2nd
arrondissement as the location for a store selling its trademark bohemian-meets-luxury
clothing and accessories straight from Manhattan. Another high-end New York brand,
Coach, has opened a Paris flagship on the same street. Previously available at some
Paris department stores, the historic leather purveyor’s handbags are now on display in
its own store. And Calvin Klein is once again selling its famous jeans, underwear and
sunglasses in Paris, in a brand-new boutique on Rue Etienne Marcel, after an absence of
a few years.

Quintessentially French brands are holding up well on this increasingly international
scene. ‘Made in France’ labels produce sustainable fashion with a very contemporary
edge, made by local craftsmen. Like Le Slip Français, a recent brand whose briefs,
boxer shorts and pants made in the Dordogne have proved unexpectedly popular.
Besides underwear in traditional styles, the company now also makes clothing, often
teaming up with well-known French brands like Aigle, Saint-James and Jean Paul
Gaultier, and opened two stores in 2014: one in the Marais, the other in the Abbesses
area of Montmartre. Another example of French craftsmanship is Léon Flam, a luggage
and accessories maker, with a store in the Haut-Marais. Then there’s Six&Sept, a new
French brand specializing in stylish knitwear for men, which has just opened a second
Paris store in the Marais.

From Porte Maillot to Avenue George V, Avenue Montaigne and the Rond-Point des
Champs-Élysées, Paris offers the best in haute couture and luxury ready-to-wear
fashion. Couturiers like Dior, Chanel, Gucci, Kenzo, Givenchy, Saint-Laurent Paris
and Azzedine Alaïa have boutiques on Avenue Montaigne. These are all very exclusive
brands: like Vionnet, which has just
opened a store on Rue Francois 1er. Elie
Saab now has a second boutique in Paris
right next to one of the French capital’s
most prestigious palace hotels, the Four
Seasons George V.
On the Champs-Elysées, luxury brands rub
shoulders with ready-to-wear. Several
carmakers also have showrooms here,
including the French trio Renault,
Peugeot and Citroën. On the side with
odd numbers, Ladurée, Louis Vuitton,

Longchamp and Le Drugstore Publicis cohabit with Abercrombie & Fitch, Maje and
Kooples Sport. On the side with even numbers, Cartier and Montblanc have stores near
the Arc de Triomphe end of the street; further on, you’ll find Tiffany & Co and the
legendary Guerlain boutique-and-spa. In between those two locations, Monoprix, Eric
Bompard, Kusmi Tea, Zara, Petit Bateau, H&M, Sephora and the concept store Le 66
stock products to suit various tastes and budgets. The opening of a Galeries Lafayette
on the Champs-Elysées is scheduled for 2018. The department store will occupy the
vast 9,000 m2 building that housed the Virgin Megastore until recently.

an eclectic mix
For a shopping spree in the heart of Paris, the districts of Saint-Germain-des-Prés,
Sèvres-Babylone and Rue de Rennes offer an eclectic mix of designer labels and readyto-wear. On Boulevard Saint-Germain and the surrounding streets, the store windows of
big-name designers draw the eye: Giorgio Armani, Sonia Rykiel, Burberry, Ralph
Lauren, Karl Lagerfeld, A.P.C., Carven, Vicomte A., Jérôme Dreyfuss. Rue de Rennes
has a line-up of major fast fashion and mid-market brands like Zara, Etam, H&M,
Kookaï, Caroll and Comptoir des Cotonniers, as well as more upscale names like
Hackett, Stefanel, Kenzo and the perfumer Jo Malone.
Behind the small Square Boucicaut is Le Bon Marché, the most stylish department store
in Paris, stocking more than 25,000 exclusive high-end products. Not far away, the
designer who epitomizes Parisian chic, Inès de la Fressange, transformed a 200 m2
former foundry into a delightful boutique in 2015. The former top model presents her
personal selection of decorative items, sunglasses, jewellery, local products and even
lingerie.
Bexley, a Lyon-based brand that makes stylish yet affordable shoes for men, has
opened its seventh store in Paris on Boulevard Saint-Germain. On the same street, the
charming loft previously occupied by Serendipity, the famous children’s room
decorator, now houses Smallable, a new brand in the same line of business. Previously
only available online, their products – fashion, interior design, furniture and toys for
kids – are now on display in this trendy concept store in Paris.
More openings are scheduled in the area for 2016. Paris’s third Apple Store will open
by the end of the year inside the fully renovated Marché Saint-Germain, which will also
house a Marks & Spencer.

> Haussmann-Opéra: the heart of Parisian shopping
Haussmann-Saint-Lazare-Opéra district is a leading urban shopping area, and the top
retail district in the French capital. It is home to major department stores, and new
shops regularly open here. Founded in 1912, Galeries Lafayette showcases the latest
fashion trends over three floors: big luxury brands, a menswear department (Lafayette
Homme) and a fifth floor devoted to children. It also houses Lafayette Gourmet, a
3,500 m² expanse over two floors devoted entirely to fine food and kitchen items. The
Printemps department store also puts the focus on luxury, stocking upscale accessory
and fashion brands like Alexander McQueen, Prada, Louis Vuitton and Red Valentino.
Rue Scribe, next to the Palais Garnier Opera House, is also a favourite haunt of
fashionistas. The Japanese unisex brand Uniqlo, the womenswear shop Maje, and Eric
Bompard, the specialist in jumpers and cashmere clothes, can be found here. On the
corner of Rue Scribe and Boulevard des Capucines, the building that previously housed
cashmere purveyor Old England has been converted into a watch and jewellery store:
Bucherer showcases 23 prestigious watch brands over six floors, including Piaget, IWC,
Panerai, Longines, Rolex, Tag Heuer and Jaeger-LeCoultre, and also has an in-store
watchmaking workshop. In 2015, the American brand Tommy Hilfiger opened a 700 m2
store in the former premises of a bank on Boulevard des Capucines, between the Opéra
and Madeleine. And the perfumer Fragonard opened its seventh and biggest Paris store
in the area – a 300 m2 expanse stocked with fragrances, accessories, decorative objects
and clothing.

> The Marais: avant-garde style
S
hops selling edgy clo thing and design and a number of underground designer boutiques
have given the Marais its avant-garde reputation. Strolling around the district is a
pleasant experience. Several streets such as the Rue des Rosiers are pedestrianized,
and the Rue des Francs-Bourgeois and Rue du Temple are closed to motorized traffic on
Sunday. The Marais is also home to chic contemporary brands like COS, Vanessa Bruno,
Isabel Marant, The Kooples, Maje, Sandro, Repetto and Zadig & Voltaire.
Southern Marais saw the opening of several new men’s fashion stores – Gucci, Moncler,
Fendi, Givenchy, Valentino Homme, The Kooples and Sandro – in the streets around
the BHV/Marais in 2015. The Haut-Marais also had its fair share of openings, with hip
young brands setting up shop on Boulevard Beaumarchais and Boulevard Filles du
Calvaire. Erotokritos, Leon & Harper, AMI Paris and Melindagloss had already opened
in the area, and were joined in 2015 by trendy French lifestyle brand Maison Kitsuné.
Across the road, La Maison Plisson has really created a buzz since it opened in the
spring of 2015. This new food hall stocks 1,500 exclusive (often organic) gourmet
products as well as locally sourced fresh produce. It also has two restaurants serving
fresh-from-the-market dishes to enjoy on-site or to take away.
Nearby, the stylish and very trendy concept store Merci stocks everything from clothes
to design items, and has two seating areas where you can have a meal. Further down,
Bonton, the children’s clothing specialist, has opened a concept store selling gifts,

Broken Arm, a smaller concept store: a clothes shop/café set up by three young
hipsters, selling designer lifestyle items and fashion brands like Carven, Kenzo and
Christophe Lemaire.
Shops selling skin care products and perfume are also cropping up throughout the
Marais, like Aesop, Kiehl's, Acqua di Parma, Diptyque, Guerlain, Jo Malone and
Annick Goutal. The Liquides boutique even has a ‘perfume bar’ with rare essences and
perfume from independent perfume makers. Trudon, a venerable brand which is

enjoying a fresh wave of popularity, sells its famous scented candles in a shop near Rue
des Rosiers. In 2015, Chanel opened its first outlet dedicated to the brand’s beauty

its first French store on Rue Vieille du Temple, displaying its attractive range of holistic
products and fragrances for the home and body.

ith its villag e atmosphere, bobo (bourgeois bohemian) vibe and vintage boutiques, SoPi (for South of Pigalle) is the latest trendsetting district in Paris. Bustling Rue des
Martyrs links the 9th arrondissement and Montmartre. Adjacent streets have several
renowned vintage shops like Zac & Sam for men or Chezelle and Rétro Chic. Shoe and
handbag designer Karine Arabian has her historic shop in this district – as does optician
and fashion designer Marc Le Bihan, who shares a retail space featuring eyewear,
accessories and hand-made clothing with the jewellery designer Jean-François Mimilla.
The area also has several ‘mini-concept stores’ marketing their personal selection: like
Place A, which rounds up interior decor objects and other trendy gifts by international
designers. Likewise for Sept Cinq, a shop set up by two young design enthusiasts, which
promotes the work of emerging Paris designers. L’Œuf sells costume jewellery,
women’s clothing and South Pigalle brand products.
The Martyrs/Pigalle district also has many renowned local food shops.
Bakery/pâtisserie/caterer Delmontel is famous for its baguettes and gourmet
creations. Nearby, on Rue des Martyrs, the pastry chef Sébastien Gaudard gives a

delicious twist to classic French desserts like the Paris-Brest and the Saint-Honoré. In
2015, Famille Mary opened a food store here, selling its line of gourmet and wellbeing
products derived from the hive: honey, royal jelly, propolis and bee pollen. At number
37, Mesdemoiselles Madeleines, creator of original madeleines, sells only these
scallop-shaped tea cakes, while the shop across the way, the pâtisserie Popelini,
specializes exclusively in cream puffs. At number 45, the skills passed down from father
to daughter have led to the opening of a wonderful new chocolate shop, La Petite
Chocolatière. A little further down, at number 54, the temperature drops to -6°C
inside the new ice cream shop Glazed, which compensates shivering customers with hot
flavours: rum, wasabi, and Espelette pepper.
In 2015, Maison Kitsuné opened a store not only in the Marais but also in Paris’s hipster
district Martyrs/Pigalle, where it occupies a huge 19th-century building on Rue
Condorcet. A street that’s changing fast: Australian cosmetics brand Aesop opened
here very recently, and French fashion brand APC will soon be bringing its minimalist
designs to the area, with not one but two stores scheduled to open in early 2016. On
the other side of Rue des Martyrs, Jamini, an interior decoration label that gives a very
Parisian touch to Indian textiles, has opened its second store on Rue Notre Dame de
Lorette. Another home decor store had opened next door only a few months previously:

The area between the Louvre, Rue Royale, Opéra, the Palais-Royal and Rue SaintHonoré is a classic Paris shopping spot. Vintage haute couture at Didier Ludot, the

Rue Saint-Honoré remains a popular choice for big names in fashion like Viktor & Rolf,
Chloe and lingerie designer Chantal Thomass. These labels have been joined by
Missoni, an icon of Italian style, which has opened a boutique-and-showroom featuring
retro 1970s decor. Clothing, colourful fabrics and decorative items by Missoni Home are
displayed over two floors. And, straight from New York, the famous handbag and readyto-wear label Coach has opened its first Paris store, designed by the well-known
American architect William Sofield, at an upscale address. Nearby, another American
label, Tory Burch, has a private shopping suite as stylish as the brand’s creations,
which have already taken London and Milan by storm.

Around Montmartre and Sacré-Coeur, there are lots of opportunities to take a break
from sightseeing and do a bit of shopping. The boutique Mademoiselle Montmartre
sells shoes, jewellery and handbags. Fans of unusual jewellery will find plenty to please
them at designer Emmanuelle Zysman’s shop, at the little boutique Schade and at
Corpus Christi. Ready-to-wear brands are plentiful in this area: Ba&sh, Kookaï,

Rue de Passy in the 16th arrondissement is one of the area’s busiest shopping streets.
Of note are the Franck & Fils department store (which will close mid-2016 to be
replaced by La Grande Epicerie BIS, the second branch of Bon Marché’s gourmet food
store) and a shopping centre, Passy Plaza, with 26 shops including Gap, Massimo Dutti,
Les Petites and l’Occitane. Other shops in the district: Gérard Darel, Repetto, Maje,
Tara Jarmon, Calzedonia, El Ganso and, since 2015, the French brand Lauren Vidal.
Isabelle Marant has a three-storey shop in a sumptuous private mansion on Avenue

The area between Ternes and Parc Monceau is ideal for a day’s shopping. It has
everything from ready-to-wear and shoes to culture and fine food stores. Rue de
Courcelles has Paul & Joe Sister, Sandro, Petit Bateau, Princesse Tam-Tam, Soeur
and Claudie Pierlot stores. The area also caters for men: they’ll find stylish shoes by
J.M. Weston and Emling and colourful, original shirts at Nodus. In 2015, Tailor Corner,
a new semi-bespoke company which started on the internet, opened its flagship store
on Avenue Mac Mahon.
Further to the east, Batignolles is an up-and-coming district with a concentration of
fashion boutiques, products for children and the shop-cum-workshops of emerging
designers between Rue des Dames, Rue des Batignolles, Rue Legendre and Rue
Lemercier. Four young designers have set up the elegant shop 29 Février selling pretty
clothes, jewellery and bespoke shoes, all made in the Paris area. French Touche also
has objects and accessories by young Parisian designers. Nearby, the quirky Superflu is
a little ‘family’ concept store where you’ll find gifts, accessories and clothes as well as
labels like Veja, Avril Gau and Les Pipelettes.

Paris has any number of designers of fashion, jewellery and luxury goods. Every year,
trade fairs and fashion shows reveal and promote young talented designers. Established
designers like Alexis Mabille, Alexandre Vauthier and Bouchra Jarrar have one or
several shops. And popular newcomers include Maxime Simöens, Jacquemus, Vincent
Schoepfer, Gaspard Yurkievich, Valentine Gauthier, Eymele Burgaud and Baptiste
Viry. Several boutiques present a range of designer items, like Hazar & Co with its
ethnic-inspired jewellery and textiles or the Robert M. Smith boutique, which offers
bold artisanal products. Men will find made-to-measure shirts and suits at Faubourg
Saint Sulpice, underwear at Dagobear and even hand-made shoes by a couple of
designers for the French brand Pete Sorensen.
Balibaris has had so much success with its casual chic men’s outfits that the young
Parisian label recently opened its fifth Paris store. The two women designers of
Héroïnes, which makes colourful dresses inspired by East London streetwear, have
opened five outlets in Paris. The future is also looking bright for Bleu Paname, an
ultra-trendy menswear brand with styles inspired by early French work gear: it now has
a store on Rue Saint-Honoré. Sézane, the young womenswear brand that started out
online, opened its first ‘connected’ store in 2015, where customers can try on new
collections, then buy them on-site or online.
The maker of trendy hand-crafted glasses Jimmy Fairly has opened three shops in
Paris, most recently in the Marais. Not far away, Delphine Pariente sells her whimsical
items of jewellery, like pendants and bracelets engraved with sweet nothings. There
are also plenty of talented designers on the leather goods scene: My Suelly with its 50sstyle shoes and bags (sold at Bon Marché), the designer Delphine Delafon, known for
the quality of her hand-made bags, and Isaac Reina (ex-Hermès and Martin Margiela),
who sells his creations in a shop in the Marais.

A visit to La Cour Paris is a must if you’d like to see the work of several talented
designers under one roof. This space, situated in the same street in the Montorgueil
district as the trendy second-hand clothes shop Killiwatch, presents decorative objects,

to be spotted by fashion professionals, the media, or the general public.

Nineteen years ago, Colette was Paris’s
only concept store. Since then, many
others have cropped up, displaying a
varied and wonderful selection of

On
Boulevard
Beaumarchais, Merci offers clothing,
furniture and decorative objects as well
as two spaces to eat and relax. Some 100
metres away, on boulevard des Filles-duCalvaire, Bonton is a concept store for
children. L’Éclaireur, in the 8th
arrondissement, presents a range of trends in fashion objects, accessories, toys, books
and interior decor. At the shopping centre near to the Canal Saint Martin, you’ll find
Veja shoes, clothes, second-hand furniture and works of art, as well as second-hand
bicycles. Nearby, the two owners of Babel offer a large selection of objects and
clothing items, and regularly transform their boutique with pop-up stores and events.
In the South Pigalle district, 30 Cancan showcases young international designers. On
the Avenue des Champs-Elysées, Le 66 is a huge retail space devoted to fashion,
accessories, books and music. Afwosh, in the 10th arrondissement, sells clothes,
jewellery, shoes and bags, and has a delicatessen section. And Paris now also has a
concept store for animals: Moustaches, which is devoted to cats and dogs.
Les Bains-Douches, the legendary 1980s nightclub, reopened in early 2015 with a new
name, ‘Les Bains Paris’. It is now a luxury hotel and restaurant/bar/club with its own
concept store, the Boutique des Bains. Opened in mid-2015, the store, located across
the street from the hotel, stocks limited edition and one-off design, fashion, art and
music items. The exclusive collection includes shoes by Pierre Hardy, jewellery from Le
Gramme, leather goods by Delphine Delafon and sunglasses by Thierry Lasry.

Following the So Ouest shopping centre in the Paris suburbs and the shopping centre at
Gare Saint-Lazare, the redesigned Beaugrenelle shopping centre opened in the 15th

Vintage is still very much in fashion in Paris. Clothes shops offering second-hand
clothes, jewellery and accessories are full of treasures. The Secours Catholique charity
recycles the clothes deposited at its headquarters in its Boutique Solidaire in the
Marais, while the Emmaüs association has seven second-hand clothes shops in Paris, the
largest of which is on Rue de Charonne. At Étienne-Marcel, Kiliwatch is one of the bestknown second-hand clothes shops in Paris. The neighbouring shop Episode has a wide
choice of leather bags, accessories, jackets and dresses from the 1960s and 1970s. The
Marais has three good places for second-hand bargains: Free 'P' Star, Noir Kennedy
and Hippy Market. For luxury items, MB Select offers bags, shoes and clothes from top
brands, while Réciproque in the 16th arrondissement is the place to track down secondhand designer labels. For home decor, Habitat, the British furniture brand, has a
vintage space featuring its old classics at the Puces de Saint-Ouen flea market.

Shopping can be reconciled with sustainable development. Several specialist shops in
Paris stock fair-trade or organic products. The big brand Alter Mundi is a reference and
sells interior decor objects, furniture, fashion items and accessories. CSAO, for
‘Compagnie du Sénégal et de l'Afrique de l'Ouest’, sells a variety of products from
Africa. In Montmartre, Tienda Esquipulas transports visitors to South America with its
masks, ex-voto and waxed fabrics in bright colours.
Front de la Mode, the first ‘sustainable fashion’ concept store in Paris, opened in the
Haut-Marais in 2015. Some 50 designers present their collections of edgy contemporary
streetwear, all of it environmentally sustainable and made using fair labour practices,
over a 200 m2 expanse. The store also has a section selling cosmetics and decorative
items, and a snack bar is coming soon. A stone’s throw from the Canal Saint-Martin,

surplus and unsold goods at affordable prices. Many brands such as Bonpoint and Maje
have opened their end-of-series shops. There are also multi-brand boutiques like
L'Habilleur. On the outskirts of Paris, several specialist shopping centres like Quai des
Marques, La Vallée Village and One Nation Paris comprise dozens of shops offering
significant discounts. One Nation Paris is now home to Galeries Lafayette Outlet, a
new boutique where the Parisian department store discounts some of its collections. In
2015, American Apparel, the brand known for its cotton basics made in Los Angeles,
opened its first outlet store in the heart of Paris, offering from 70% to 90% off regular

> The new addresses for design
Paris is a landmark destination for lovers of contemporary design. French designers
such as the brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, Tsé Tsé & associées, Patrick Jouin
and Christophe Pillet attract clients from home and abroad. The Marais, a hot spot for
design, is home to numerous design showrooms like Byzance Home, devoted to home
decor, with its exclusive lines in Scandinavian design. At Fleux and Pylones, you can
treat yourself to practical design objects at reasonable prices. The latest trends can
also be found in concept stores like Les Eclairagistes for lights, or The House Factory,
which mixes furniture and other objects. In 2014, Ligne Roset, the famous French
furniture design brand (Pierre Paulin, the Bouroullec brothers) opened a new 700 m2
showroom on four levels, on Rue Réaumur. After their boutique at Palais-Royal, Tsé
Tsé & associées have also opened one in the Marais. And Muji, the Japanese ‘no-brand,
no-logo’ company, has unveiled its 700 m2 flagship store at the Forum des Halles,
where it showcases its decorative objects, tableware, furniture and storage accessories
in a pared-down, modern style. AM-PM, the home decoration brand of online retailer
La Redoute, previously available by mail order only, has three retail outlets in Paris as
of 2015 – two shop-in-shops (at the BHV Marais and Galeries Lafayette Maison) as well
an own store selling furniture, accessories and household linen near Boulevard SaintGermain in the 6th arrondissement, just behind the famous Café de Flore.

Shopping for art is a confirmed trend in Paris. Arteum, a concept store for art, displays

An Eiffel Tower, a snow globe, a postcard of the Louvre ... Impossible to leave the
French capital without buying a traditional souvenir. Souvenir shops, kiosks or themed
shops are often located close to the city’s major cultural sites. The sixth floor of the

Beauty boutique Souris Verte offers workshops on making your own organic cosmetics
to take care of yourself the natural way. Huygens, a new Parisian beauty-care brand,
offers natural bespoke cosmetics in its new boutique in the Marais. In 2015, two big
names in cosmetics opened stores in the Opéra district. One is Melvita, France’s first
organic skincare brand, which has sold apitherapy products and cosmetics made from
other natural ingredients sourced in the brand’s home territory, the Ardèche, for the
past 30 years. The other is the Chinese high-end cosmetics label Herborist, which has
opened its European flagship store on Avenue de l’Opéra. Caudalie, the Bordeauxbased brand that makes cosmetics derived from the grapevine, has opened its second
Paris store in the Caroussel du Louvre. Sakaré, the London brand specializing in
skincare made from natural plants and sea algae, has also opened a second store in
Paris after launching in the Marais: this one is on Rue du Four, in Saint-Germain.

Rue de la Paix and Place Vendôme are home to high-end jewellers whose magnificent

jewellery workshop above its boutique. Every year, the brand presents two collections

Detou, its pistachios, ground almonds, pine nuts,
chocolate bars etc. are ordered directly from
the producers. The food halls of major
department stores, like the Grande Épicerie du
Bon Marché and Lafayette Gourmet, offer a wide and international choice, with the
accent on quality. A second Grande Epicerie is to open in the Passy district of the 16th
arrondissement in 2017. Also in 2017, BHV Marais will be opening a Paris branch of
Eataly, the Italian food emporium first set up in Milan, in a space extending over
several thousand metres in the Marais.
Meanwhile, many new fine food stores have opened in Paris, featuring modern decor
and often selling organic products sourced from small local producers. Two examples of
this trend are Causses and L’Epicierie Générale in the 9th arrondissement, combining
a gourmet grocery and deli eats like soups, salads and sandwiches. In a similar vein, but
on a much larger scale, La Maison Plisson is the new foodie hotspot in the Haut-Marais.

fact, the French capital has over 80 markets in its different neighbourhoods. Whether
specialized, covered or open-air, the markets are popular places with Parisians. And

you do not have to be an early riser. Some markets are open in the afternoon, even all
day. Markets like the ones on Boulevard Raspail and in Batignolles offer a wide choice

These streets are full of life at any time of day. The delicious aroma of roast chicken
fills the air and sets mouths watering; tradesmen hawk their wares to passers-by. In
Paris’s market streets, shops also have outside stalls, where you can find all the

Although Sunday closing is the norm, a dozen tourist areas are an exception to this
rule: the Champs-Elysées, Beaugrenelle, Bercy Village, La Défense, Italie 2 and the
Marais, Haussmann, Saint-Germain/Rue de Rennes, Les Halles, Ternes and Montmartre
districts. Shops open on Sunday on the Champs-Élysées are Zara, Fnac and Marionnaud;
at the Carrousel du Louvre, Lacoste, Maille, Nature & Découvertes and Apple; at
Bercy Village, Agnès b. and Alice Délice; at Montmartre, La Chaise Longue, Mono’

From Saturday to Monday, the flea markets at the gateways of Paris are a hive of
activity. Both popular and very specialized, the flea markets are veritable treasure
troves for fans of designer furniture, antiques and curios of all kinds. You can go
bargain hunting for anything in Paris! Strolling along the banks of the Seine, you’ll see
the famous bouquinistes who offer numerous old and second-hand books, as well as
engravings, postcards and other collector’s items. Bargain hunting in Paris also means
combing the many second-hand sales which take place during the year. Good bargains
are also to be found in dépôts-ventes (consignment shops) and second-hand clothes
concessions in major department stores.

In the Marais district in the heart of Paris, the little streets and courtyards of the
Village Saint-Paul are home to numerous antique dealers. L’Avant-Cour offers a
handpicked selection of objects from around the world. You will also find shops selling
antique and hand-crafted jewellery. There are lively brocantes, or second-hand
markets, in different parts of the city every weekend, offering a diverse selection of
goods including old and rare books, vintage clothing, toys and unusual objects. Over
towards Saint-Germain-des-Prés and as far as the Musée d’Orsay, some 120 antique
dealers make up the Carré Rive Gauche.

Museum shops are full of artistic, contemporary and classic objects and combine
shopping with culture. Numerous Parisian art venues have shops selling reproductions or
prints of works exhibited. For the latest fashionable object, go to the Centre
Pompidou, or the contemporary shop Black Block at the Palais de Tokyo. For more rare
objects, take a stroll under the Louvre pyramid. Next to the Seine, the Musée du Quai
Branly’s shop stocks objects inspired by ethnographic art. 107 Rivoli, the shop at the
Musée des Arts Décoratifs, and the Pinacothèque shop sell contemporary articles. The
fully renovated Musée Picasso has re-opened its beautiful shop and bookstore, which
stocks a wide range of exhibition catalogues and art books as well as exquisite
stationery, tableware and design objects.

PARIS SHOPPING
Covered passages lined with shops started to appear in Paris in the 18th century. The
majority were to open a century later and are part of the
19th-century heritage so prominent in Paris. They are
mostly to be found on the Right Bank of the Seine, mainly
near to the Grands Boulevards, in areas that attracted the
wealthy classes at the time of their construction.
They usually take the form of a gallery which has been
created by piercing through other buildings or that was
built at the same time as them. The galleries are covered
with a glass roof which lets in daylight from above giving a
special effect. These galleries evolved over the years. They
were ideal for escaping the crowds, meeting someone or
shopping out of the rain and bad weather. Abandoned, then
revamped in the 20th century, twenty or so of them still
exist today and are highly-prized by Parisians and visitors.
Inside, you’ll find numerous shops as well as restaurants,
art galleries and tea rooms, and each passage has its own
character.
