L’HISTORIQUE DE L’INTERNATIONAL GYMNIX LES GAGNANTES DE L’INTERNATIONAL GYMNIX 2011 THE HISTORY OF L’INTERNATIONAL GYMNIX 2011 L’INTERNATIONAL GYMNIX WINNERS La compétition de gymnastique artistique féminine L’INTERNATIONAL GYMNIX existe depuis 1991. DAWES PATTERSON JOHNSON PODKOPAYEVA L’INTERNATIONAL GYMNIX women’s artistic gymnastics competition exists since 1991. This unique event in Canada groups together the Canadian and world’s elite in a festive atmosphere which combines performance and friendship. As one of the rare international competitions that offer apparatus raised on podium, this event is sought after by Canadian gymnasts. In 1995, the CLASSIQUE GYMNIX was created to welcome athletes from the provincial and national categories. We are very proud to mention the names of a few world renowned gymnasts who have competed in previous editions of L’International Gymnix, notably the 1996 Olympic all-around champion Lilia Podkopayeva and team champion Dominique Dawes, the all-around 2004 champion Carly Patterson, the 2007 world champion, Shawn Johnson, and the 2009 world champion, Bridget Sloan. In 2009 and 2010 male and female gymnasts from the World Cup circuit made a stop in Montreal for the first time since the 1985 World Championships. The Montreal audience marveled at the athletes’ performances throughout these two unique events in North America. Since 1991, gymnasts from all continents have filled the podium of L’INTERNATIONAL GYMNIX coming from Australia, Japan, Israel, France, Belgium, Spain, Switzerland, England, Austria, Russia, Ukraine, Byelorussia, Uzbekistan, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Finland, Jamaica and the United-States. My name is Paraskevi Babalis but everybody calls me Vivi. I‚Äôve been training at Gymnix Club since I was 4 years old and now I am 15 years old.¬† When I was small, the beam was neither my favorite nor my best event but as it got har Quand j’étais petite, la poutre n’était pas mon engin pré- der I got better and I started to gain some confidence.¬† féré, ni mon meilleur. Funny how it works!! In 2010, I was the bronze medalist at the International Gymnix, junior beam final. In 2011, I was selected at the Winter Canadian Games and I won silver on beam. ¬† It was the best experience I had! But I wanted to experience some bigger competitions.¬† Then was my preparation for the Canadian Championships and I had two goals.¬† The first goal was to finish first on the beam and the second one, was to be on the National Team.¬† During that preparation I injured my elbow but I didn‚Äôt give up and worked hard.¬† All the hard work paid off and I accomplished 1. Founded in 1973, GYMNIX mission is to achieve gymnastics excellence by participating in major international events with the OLYMPIC GAMES as its primary goal. From the beginning, the GYMNIX gymnasts distinguished themselves by the quality of their execution and their performances on the Quebec and Canadian scenes. Barely three years after its foundation, Ginette Dufresne from GYMNIX came inches away from qualifying for the Montreal Olympic Games, finishing 9th at the selections (top 7 made the Olympic team). Such an excellent performance in so little time set the stage for the years to come where the quest for an Olympic participation had become the club’s main objective. In order to make it, we had to improve the training conditions and technique and increase the level of difficulty. We had to rank amongst the best Canadians and participate in important events such as the Pan American Games, the Commonwealth Games, and the World Championships. That is what many of our gymnasts achieved in the upcoming years. The Olympic dream still remained difficult to realize. First, because of the boycott of the 1980 Moscow Games, the club’s representative Carmen Alie was denied the opportunity to compete. In 1984, none of GYMNIX’s athletes were present at the selection. It wasn’t until 1988, fifteen years since the club’s foundation, that Cathy Giancaspro became the first GYMNIX athlete to participate in the Olympic Games. What a proud moment for all of us! Cathy made her way to the top and was followed by five other athletes: Mylene Fleury (1992), Julie Beaulieu (2000), Émilie Fournier (2000), Amélie Plante (2004) and Nansy Damianova (2008). An Olympic participation is quite an accomplishment in it self, but six Olympians from the same gymnastics club is a very uncommon achievement. Congratulations to the gymnasts who proudly wore the GYMNIX colors in all of the international events throughout the years. 6 5 4 LES OLYMPIENNES DU CLUB GYMNIX GYMNIX’S OLYMPIANS 1988 - SÉOUL 2000 - SYDNEY CATHY GIANCASPRO 1985 Championnats du Monde / World Championships 1987 Championnats du Monde / World Championships ÉMILIE FOURNIER 1998 Jeux du Commonwealth / Commonwealth Games 1999 Jeux Panaméricains / Panamerican Games 1999 Championnats du Monde / World Championships 1992 - BARCELONE 2004 - ATHÈNES MYLÈNE FLEURY 1991 Jeux Panaméricains / Panamerican Games 1992 Championnats du Monde / World Championships AMÉLIE PLANTE 1999 Championnats du Monde / World Championships 2001 Championnats du Monde / World Championships 2002 Championnats du Monde / World Championships 2003 Championnats du Monde / World Championships 2000 - SYDNEY JULIE BEAULIEU 1999 Jeux Panaméricains / Panamerican Games 1999 Championnats du Monde / World Championships 1 1 CATHY GIANCASPRO 2 MYLÈNE FLEURY 2 3 JULIE BEAULIEU 2008 - BEIJING NANSY DAMIANOVA 2007 Championnats du Monde / World Championships 4 AMÉLIE PLANTE 3 5 ÉMILIE FOURNIER 6 NANSY DAMIANOVA Du terrain de jeu au podium From Playground to Podium Au Canada, les gouvernements collaborent avec les organismes sportifs afin de créer un environnement plus ouvert et qui favorise l’activité physique, la participation au sport, le succès de nos athlètes et la vie active.
