First United Methodist Church in Waynesville, North Carolina is the church
home not only to the congregation but also to many visitors and residents of the
area Methodist conference center at Lake Junaluska. Consequently the church is
used for many events for the Western Conference of the United Methodist
Church. A few years ago after a fire virtually destroyed the building, the architects
designed a large new church that incorporated the two exterior walls and bell
tower that remained standing after the fire. The interior of the nave is
constructed of solid, reflective surfaces that provide an excellent acoustic for
music. Earth-tone colors and natural materials of wood and stone give the
contemporary space a warm appearance. The choir is seated at the front of the
nave in a semi-circular space that can accommodate a large chorus in addition to
instrumentalists. Movable chancel furniture provides the necessary flexibility for
the multi-use needs of the church and community.
The instrument occupies a raised loft above the choir from where it speaks
directly into the nave. In keeping with the contemporary interior treatment, the
organ façade is composed of the functional pipes from the Great and Pedal
divisions. The console is movable for recitals and is made of cherry to match the
chancel furniture and handsome front wall, which serves as an acoustic shell for
the choir. The organ specification was planned to provide considerable tonal
color for service playing, recitals and use by the United Methodist Church for
conferences and workshops.
