The legend of Switzerland’s national hero, William Tell, serves as an example. At that time, Tell pulled off brilliantly the incredibly difficult feat, both emotionally and technically, of shooting an apple off his own son’s head with a crossbow. In London, the challenge facing the Swiss athletes is to do the same, to surpass themselves, to withstand the enormous pressure and, just at the crucial moment, thanks to their ambition, to have the will to win and ability to produce their best possible performance. So, an apple pierced with an arrow goes with our delegation as a symbol. «We make it happen!» In the hearts of our Olympic athletes burns a fire that was kindled four years ago. At that time, they had set off on a journey which, in retrospect, took a different course and yet the same one for all of them. They were able to celebrate successes and victories and had to overcome defeats and injuries. The trick was not to lose sight of the big goal. Anyone who takes up their position on the starting blocks in London has successfully navigated that journey, physically and mentally. Anyone who, in their life, has set their sights so intensively on the Olympic Games, has In den Herzen unserer Olympioniken brennt ein vor vier Jahren entfachtes Feuer. ». «We make it happen!» Chi ha focalizzato la propria vita sui Giochi olimpici merita di essere protagonista durante questa Swiss Olympic | Team Guide 3 earned their own place in the spotlight at the Games, their own chance to introduce themselves to the world and to experience the unmistakeable «Olympic Spirit». We are very pleased to see a team, the football players, being represented in the Swiss delegation again for the first time since 1996. But regardless of whether our athletes are competing solo, in pairs, in fours or, indeed, as an eleven, the red-and-white flag flies proudly behind every Swiss name and team. Our athletes are ambassadors for Switzerland. And there could hardly be a better or bigger showcase than these Summer Games. Our thanks go to all those people in the background who, with tireless commitment, have accompanied and supported the athletes in their preparation. It is only in such an optimum environment that our Olympic athletes have been able to qualify for London 2012. We are taking on the responsibility for ensuring that they also find the best possible underlying conditions there on the spot. We wish the whole of the Swiss Olympic Team 2012 in England every success and that famous stroke of luck so that they all hit their own personal «target» – just as William Tell once did!
