Map 1010 A i n d i c a t e s t h e a r e a i s u n d e r l a i n by Permian and
(?) earlier Cache Creek g r e e n s t o n e . S e r p e n t i n e o u t c r o p s
l o c a l l y i n more o r less v e r t i c a l l y s i d e d n o s e s on each s i d e
of t h e v a l l e y o v e r an a r e a some 1,200' by 700'.
Three
p r i n c i p a l zones of m i n e r a l i z a t i o n have been i d e n t i f i e d as t h e
" c e n t r a l " , " n o r t h e a s t " and " s o u t h e a s t " showings. Chromite
o c c u r s as d i s s e m i n a t e d g r a i n s i n l e n s e s and p a t c h e s . The
l e n s e s have a maxinum known l e n g t h of 350' and width of 1 8 ' .
The m i n e r a l i z a t i o n i s l o c a l l y s h e a r e d and d i s p l a c e d by
f a u l t i n g . T e s t s by M n e s Branch, Ottawa, on c e n t r a l zone
samples i n d i c a t e d a s h i p p i n g grade a s s a y i n g 50% Cr203 and 15%
Fe s h o u l d b e o b t a i n e d by g r i n d s of from minus 28 t o mines 35
mesh.
The p r o p e r t y i s l o c a t e d a t 3,100' e l e v a t i o n on t h e NW
s i d e o f Ferguson Creek, a t r i b u t a r y of t h e Bonaparte R i v e r ,
some 1 5 m i l e s north-northwest of A s h c r o f t . Showings on
S c o t t i e Creek, 3 m i l e s t o t h e n o r t h , were d i s c o v e r e d i n
1901, however t h e r e i s n o r e p o r t of a c t i v i t y on Ferguson
Creek u n t i l t h e 1920's.
The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada
Limited i n 1927 o p t i o n e d two c l a i m s (Bear group ?) on
Ferguson Creek and s t a k e d a d d i t i o n a l claims. E x p l o r a t i o n
work, c o n f i n e d t o t h e n o r t h e a s t showing, i n c l u d e d t r e n c h i n g
and 167' of c r o s s c u t and d r i f t i n one a d i t at 3,000'
e l e v a t i o n . Operations ceased i n 1931 and t h e c l a i m s were
allowed t o l a p s e .
I n t h e e a r l y 1940's t h e p r o p e r t y comprised 4 c l a i i s h e l d
by D.B. S t e r r e t t of Kamloops and H. Cargyle and J. B a r r of
A s h c r o f t ; no work was r e p o r t e d a t t h a t time. The showings
were examined by H.K.A. Rice, of t h e G e o l o g i c a l Survey o f
Canada i n 1942. H e concluded t h e r e were 20,000 t o n s of about
15% Cr203 reasonably a s s u r e d , and a p o s s i b l e t o t a l of 50,000
tons.
S t Joseph E x p l o r a t i o n s Limited i n 1977 h e l d ground i n t h i s
v i c i n i t y as t h e TIK 1 claim (12 u n i t s ) . Work i n c l u d e d a
ground magnetometer survey o v e r 14.5 l i n e k i l o m e t r e s .
The Chrome 1 c l a i m (20 u n i t s ) , s t a k e d on t h e showings i n
November 1985, was acquired by Technigen P l a t i n u m carp o r a t i o n .
