My parents had always been very much in love. They met when they were
very young and were married for almost 60 years. They never left each other’s side,
except on one particular occasion.
My father received a letter informing him of the death of his elderly uncle in
Glasgow. He would therefore have to go to the city, to attend the funeral. A return
bus ticket was very expensive, and my mother had a particular aversion to funerals.
Consequently, it was decided that my mother would not accompany my father on his
trip. My father was terrified at the idea of leaving my mother, even for a day.
On the day of the funeral, my mother accompanied my father to the bus
station. My father and mother said goodbye and my mother started to cry.
When the driver turned on the engine, my father, realising he really did not
want to be without his wife, jumped out of his seat and ran out of the side door of the
bus.
What he hadn’t seen was that my mother, feeling the same way, had got on
the bus through the front door with the last minute intention of accompanying her
husband.
In the end, she went to the funeral, instead of my father.
