At European Top Level
After his recent victories in the Belgian and German Championships, as well as in the WSK, Junior Nyck De Vries
achieved his fourth success in a row in the very hard-fought KF3 category. On the Genk track (Belgium), on 3 May,
the Dutch kartman dominated his rivals. For Nyck, this new international success had a special taste, since it was
the qualifying round for the European Championship.

ue to the high number of enrolled drivers in the KF3 category in Europe, the International Karting Federation has organised, for several years now, a series of qualifying meetings
divided according to geographical areas (north, west, and
centre). The best drivers reach the European Championship final, which
this year will be held at Zuera, near Zaragoza (Spain). Nyck De Vries
moved to Genk (east from Brussels) together with the drivers of the
Northern region. “My number 1 objective was to be in group of the first 28
at the end of the two finals, in order to secure my presence in the European
final. But during free practice, I often set the best times and naturally I began
to think I could win”, Nyck confessed.
Indeed, Nyck soon confirmed his good feeling with the track. “The weekend of 12 April, I came to Genk to race in a round of the Belgian Championship, which I won. At the time we collected a lot of precious technical data,
which proved to be very useful here, on the track”. During timed qualifiers,
Nyck De Vries went straight to pole position at the end of a perfectly
managed session. In the qualifying heats, the Dutch driver showed a perfect performance, without hitting any wrong note: four starts, four victories, no mistake and performances that were equally successful and regular, at the wheel of his Zanardi-Parilla.
However, he had a little annoyance at the start of Race 1. “Speed is
checked electronically on the departure line, where drivers must not exceed
50 km/h. Everything was fine during the heats, but then I passed at 52 km/h.
So I knew I would suffer a 2-sec penalty. I pushed at maximum to gain an
advantage of more than two seconds, but I missed the first place for just 12
hundredths/second”.
In Race 2, Nyck regained the lead of the pack on the very first bend. But
a few laps later, he was hit from behind and finished out of the track. “So
I fell to third. Then, I managed to overtake

my two opponents, I defended my place
from their attacks and I won again”.

“Last year in Sweden, in the same race, I was
already in a position to win, but I was heavi-
ly penalised and had to content myself with the fourth place. It is a great
revenge and a superb reward for the whole team. Dino Chiesa, my team
manager, was there and we really worked hard on the equipment throughout the weekend”. After this new victory Nyck De Vries is now one of the
favourites of the European KF3 Championship. In few days, the talented
Dutch driver will also defend the colours of Zanardi at Suzuka (Japan),
where he will race in the Yamaha category.

Au top niveau européen
Après ses succès aux championnats de Belgique et d’Allemagne, ainsi qu’à la WSK, le Junior Nyck De Vries vient de
remporter une quatrième victoire consécutive dans la très relevée catégorie KF3. Le 3 mai sur le circuit de Genk, en
Belgique, le kartman hollandais a largement dominé la concurrence. Pour Nyck, ce nouveau succès international
possède une saveur particulière, car il s’agit de la course de qualification au championnat d’Europe.
E
n raison du nombre important d’engagés en Europe dans la
catégorie KF3, la Fédération Internationale de Karting organise
depuis quelques années des qualifications par zone géographique (nord, ouest, centre). Les meilleurs sont retenus pour la
finale du championnat d’Europe, qui aura lieu cette année à Zuera, près
de Saragosse en Espagne. De nationalité hollandaise, Nyck De Vries s’est
rendu à Genk (à l’est de Bruxelles) avec les pilotes de la région nord. “L’objectif numéro 1 était d’abord de faire partie des 28 premiers à l’issue des deux
finales, afin d’assurer ma présence à la finale européenne. Mais dès les essais
libres, j’ai fréquemment signé les meilleurs temps et j’ai naturellement pensé
à la victoire”, confesse Nyck.
En effet, Nyck ne tarde pas à confirmer son aisance en piste. “Le week-end
du 12 avril, je suis venu à Genk pour disputer une manche du championnat
de Belgique, que j’ai d’ailleurs gagnée. Nous avions enregistré de précieuses
informations techniques qui nous ont servi en arrivant sur le circuit”. Aux
essais chronométrés, Nyck De Vries s’installe directement en pole position à l’issue d’une séance parfaitement négociée. Dans les manches de
qualification, le Hollandais effectue un véritable récital, sans aucune
fausse note: quatre départs, quatre victoires, aucune erreur et des performances aussi élevées que constantes au volant de son Zanardi-Parilla.
Une petite contrariété va toutefois survenir au départ de la Course 1. “La
vitesse est contrôlée électroniquement sur la ligne de départ, où les pilotes
ne doivent pas dépasser 50 km/h. Alors que tout s’est bien passé dans les
manches, je suis passé à 52 km/h. Je savais donc que j’allais être pénalisé de
deux secondes. J’ai poussé au maximum pour gagner avec une avance
supérieure à deux secondes, mais il m’a manqué douze centièmes pour
conserver ma première place”.
Dans la Course 2, Nyck récupère la tête du peloton dès le premier virage.
Mais quelques tours plus tard, il se fait percuter par l’arrière et se
retrouve hors de la piste. “Cela m’a fait chuter en troisième position. Puis,
j’ai réussi à dépasser mes deux adversaires, j’ai bien protégé ma place pour
ne pas qu’ils tentent de me redoubler et j’ai

fini par gagner à nouveau”. Invaincu de

“Lors de cette même course en 2008 en
Suède, j’étais déjà en position de gagner,
avant d’être durement pénalisé et de me
contenter de la 4e place. C’est une belle revanche et une superbe récompense
pour toute l’équipe. Dino Chiesa, mon team manager, était présent et on a
vraiment bien travaillé sur le matériel tout le week-end”. Après cette nouvelle victoire qui place Nyck De Vries parmi les favoris au prochain championnat d’Europe KF3, le talentueux Hollandais ira défendre les couleurs
de la marque Zanardi dans quelques jours à Suzuka au Japon, où il est
inscrit dans la catégorie Yamaha.
