WCET Adelaide Congress: An outstanding
success!

Everyone agrees, the 19th WCET Congress held in
Adelaide, Australia, has been an outstanding success!
Congratulations to Fiona Bolton, Congress Convenor, and
her team: Lisa, Margie, Carmen, Sue, Sharmaine, Sandra,
Merle, Elizabeth English, Congress Liaison, and Janine Power
and Lejla Mehmedagic from Sapmea! The scientific and
social programs were remarkable. There were more than
900 attendees coming from 47 countries. Although some
may have thought that Australia was so far, it proved to
be very good!! The WCET Congress is the highlight of our
organisation; it is the meeting point of ET nurses and health
care professionals from all around the world with an interest
in ostomy, wound or continence care. Without any doubt, this
Congress has succeeded to meet all expectations.
I congratulate and thank all the speakers who shared their
experience and passion for ET nursing. Special kudos to
the first-time presenters; this is an experience they will
never forget and I am sure has made them very proud. The
opportunity for many questions and comments from the
participants added to the quality of the lectures and the
quality of the poster exhibits certainly challenged the judges.
Congratulations to all the poster winners!
An important event of the WCET Congress is the general
meeting. Thanks to Susan Dunne for accepting to be our
parliamentarian. The general meeting has been a great
opportunity to inform the International Delegates (IDs)
and the members about the activities and projects of the
organisation. The Board members also highlighted their
accomplishments over the past two years. Susan Stelton,
Vice-President, gave an overview of the membership survey.
More information on the collected data will be published
very soon in the WCET Journal. For more thorough
information about the Board activities, please refer to the
biennial reports that have been posted in the WCET website
library.

Following a productive discussion, changes to the
Constitution were finalised and approved. Members also
approved to increase the membership fee by five (5) GBP
which will be effective on 1 January 2013. It was also
approved to make the Congress and Meeting Coordinator
an appointed Board position. Following this approval, a
modification of the newly elected Board has been made. Dee
Waugh has accepted the Congress and Meeting Coordinator
position and has resigned as the Treasurer. Walter Lo has
agreed to fill the Treasurer position for another term.
Barry Maughan, President of IOA, was invited to give an
update about his organisation. It is always interesting to
observe that, although our organisations are different, our
ultimate goal is the same and that we can only be stronger by
joining forces.
One of the strategic initiatives of the WCET is to increase its
visibility. This year, thanks to the permission of Paula ErwinToth and Diane Krasner, editors of the book Enterostomal
Therapy Nursing: Growth and Evolution of a Nursing Specialty
Worldwide a Festschrift for Norma N Gill-Thompson that was
first published in 1996; the WCET updated and published a
second edition of this book. Mrs Erwin-Toth was present at
the WCET stand to autograph the book. The Board members
also welcomed the attendees at the WCET stand and the
usual tombola again raised funds for the NNG Foundation.
The next WCET Congress will be held in Gothenburg,
Sweden, in 2014. The organising committee greeted
the attendees at their booth. Also, our ECET colleagues
promoted their next meeting, which will be held in Lucerne,
Switzerland, in 2013.
At the occasion of the 2012 Congress, it was decided to
proclaim June 26th the WCET Norma N Gill Day to honour
our Founder, first President and first Journal Editor on her
birthday. You are all invited to celebrate this special day
in your facility and to inform others about the ET nursing
speciality. This is also an opportunity to raise funds for the
NNG Foundation. Why not develop a poster, host a morning
tea or set up a booth in your facility or a shopping mall? Be
creative and make sure to let the membership know how you
have celebrated this special day in the BullETin!
Our Congress would not have been possible without the
long-term sustaining collaboration and sponsorship of our
industry partners; many thanks to all of them. This year a
passport, designed by the organising team, ensured that
everyone was in contact with all the companies. This helped
to keep the exhibit booths very busy with visitors.
The WCET Congress is also about networking. All
the attendees were encouraged to take this wonderful
opportunity to develop new relationships or renew with
colleagues and friends. Special thanks to the organising
committee for acknowledging the specificity of the paediatric
population and for planning many paediatric sessions,
giving ET nurses and health care professionals working in
paediatrics the possibility to share their passion, knowledge
and competencies. Attendees with an interest in paediatrics
held a meeting where it was decided to develop a paediatric
section in the WCET Journal. What an exciting initiative!
Kudos to Merle Boeree for a fabulous job; we will never
forget the gala evening! Merle succeeded in making us all feel
like the stars of ET nursing by having us walk the red carpet!
We enjoyed the beautiful city of Adelaide along with its
food and wine. We had much fun and we learned! As in the
song of Josh Groban, performed by the choir at the opening
ceremony, the WCET Congress 2012 has succeeded to "raise
us up to more as we can be" from a professional and personal
standpoint.
LE CONGRÈS DU WCET À ADÉLAÏDE: UN SUCCÈS
EXCEPTIONNEL!
De façon unanime le 19e congrès du WCET tenu à Adelaïde
en Australie s’est avéré un fier succès! Félicitations à Fiona
Bolton présidente du congrès et à son équipe: Lisa, Margie,
Carmen, Sue, Sharmaine, Sandra et Merle, à Elizabeth
English, agent de liaison du WCET pour le congrès, ainsi
qu’à Lejla Mehmedagic et Jeannine Power de de la firme
Sapmea! Cette équipe a su mettre sur pied un programme
scientifique et social remarquable. Cette année, le congrès
a accueilli plus de 900 participants, venant de 47 pays.
Malgré la distance à parcourir pour certains, le voyage en
valait le coup! Le congrès du WCET est le point culminant
de notre organisation et le rendez-vous des infirmières
stomathérapeutes et des professionnels de la santé ayant un
intérêt dans les soins de stomie, de plaie ou de continence à
l’échelle mondiale; le congrès d’Adélaïde a sans aucun doute
répondu aux attentes de chacun.
Je remercie et félicite les conférenciers, tant les conférenciersinvités que ceux qui ont soumis un résumé et partagé leur
expérience et leur passion pour la stomathérapie. Félicitations
spéciales aux conférenciers qui présentaient pour la première
fois, c’est une expérience qu’ils n’oublieront jamais et qui j’en
suis sûre les a rendus très fiers. Les sessions ont donné lieu à
de nombreuses questions et commentaires des participants
ce qui n’a qu’ajouté à la qualité des conférences. Les séances
d’affiches ont été populaires et leur qualité n’a pas facilité le
travail des juges.
Félicitations à tous les gagnants!
Un événement important du congrès WCET est l’Assemblée
générale des membres. Je tiens à remercier Susan Dunne,
qui a gracieusement accepté d’agir à titre de parlementaire.
C e t t e ré u n i o n a p e r m i s d ’ i n f o r m e r l e s d é l é g u é s
internationaux et les membres du WCET sur les activités
et les projets de l’organisation et a donné aux membres
du conseil d’administration l’occasion de parler de leurs
réalisations des deux dernières années. Susan Stelton, viceprésidente, a donné un aperçu du sondage réalisé auprès des
membres en 2011; les données recueillies seront publiées très
prochainement dans le Journal. Pour plus d’informations sur
les activités du conseil d’administration, prière de se référer à
la section "library" du site web; vous y trouverez les rapports
biennaux des membres du conseil d’administration, de la
rédactrice en chef du journal et de la directrice des opérations.
Suite à une discussion productive, quelques changements
constitutionnels ont été finalisés et approuvés. Les membres
ont également approuvé une augmentation des frais
d’adhésion de cinq (5) livres sterlings; cette augmentation
sera effective à partir du 1er janvier 2013. Il a également
été approuvé par les délégués internationaux d’ajouter un
poste de coordonnatrice des congrès et réunions au conseil
d’administration. Suite à ce changement, une modification du
conseil d’administration nouvellement élu a dû être faite, Dee
Waugh a accepté de démissionner de son poste de trésorière
et Walter Lo a accepté de revenir dans cette position pour un
autre mandat.
Barry Maughan, président de l’Association Internationale
des Stomisés, a partagé avec les participants quelques
informations sur son organisation. Il est toujours intéressant
de voir que bien que nos associations soient différentes, nous
partageons le même but et que c’est en travaillant ensemble
que nous pourrons mieux l’atteindre.
L’une des initiatives stratégiques du WCET est d’en
augmenter la visibilité et cette année, avec à la permission
de mesdames Paula Erwin-Toth et Diane Krasner, éditrices
du livre Enterostomal Therapy Nursing: Growth and Evolution
of a Nursing Specialty Worldwide a Festschrift for Norma
N Gill-Thompson publié en 1996, le WCET a mis à jour et
publié la seconde édition de ce livre. Mme Erwin-Toth était
présente au kiosque du WCET où elle a dédicacé le livre. Les
membres du conseil d’administration ont également accueilli
les participants au kiosque du WCET et une tombola a permis
d’amasser des fonds pour la Fondation NNG.
Le prochain congrès du WCET aura lieu à Göteborg, en
Suède, en 2014 et les membres du comité organisateur
ont salué les participants à leur kiosque tout comme nos
collègues de l’ECET qui ont profité de l’occasion pour
promouvoir leur prochain congrès qui aura lieu en 2013 à
Lucerne, en Suisse.
A l’occasion du congrès 2012, il a été décidé de proclamer
le 26 Juin la Journée Norma N Gill du WCET pour honorer
notre fondatrice, première présidente et rédactrice du journal
à l’occasion de son anniversaire de naissance. Tous sont

invités à profiter de cette occasion pour célébrer l’anniversaire
de Norma N Gill dans leur établissement et d’en profiter
pour informer les gens sur la spécialité de la stomathérapie,
et pourquoi pas pour amasser des fonds pour la fondation
NNG? Vous pouvez célébrer cette journée en créant une
affiche, en jumelant une séance d’information à une pausesanté, en ayant un kiosque dans un centre d’achats, etc ...
Laissez place à votre imagination et faites – nous part de vos
initiatives dans le Bulletin!
Le congrès du WCET n’aurait pas été possible sans
la collaboration fidèle et soutenue de nos partenaires de
l’industrie, un grand merci à chacun d’eux. Les kiosques
d’exposition ont été bien visités; cette année un passeport
conçu par le comité organisateur a fait en sorte que tous les
participants soient en contact avec toutes les compagnies.
Assister au congrès du WCET est également une histoire
de réseautage. Tous les participants ont été invités à
profiter de cette merveilleuse occasion pour développer
de nouvelles relations ou renouer avec des collègues et
amis. Je tiens à remercier le comité organisateur qui a su
reconnaître la spécificité de la population pédiatrique et a
planifié plusieurs sessions pédiatriques donnant à tous ceux
et celles qui s’intéressent à cette clientèle la possibilité de
partager leur passion, leurs connaissances et compétences en
stomothérapie pédiatrique. Les participants ayant un intérêt
en pédiatrie se sont réunis et ils ont décidé de travailler
ensemble pour développer une section pédiatrique dans la
revue du WCET. Quelle initiative excitante!
Bravo à Merle Boeree qui a fait un travail fabuleux, nous
n’oublierons jamais la soirée de gala! Merle a réussi à nous
faire sentir comme les étoiles de la stomothérapie en nous
faisant marcher sur le tapis rouge! Nous avons beaucoup
apprécié la magnifique ville d’Adélaïde, les mets et le vin.
Nous avons eu du plaisir et nous avons appris! Comme
dans la chanson de Josh Groban chantée par la chorale lors
de la cérémonie d’ouverture, le congrès du WCET 2012 a
réussi à "nous élever au sommet de ce que nous pouvons
être" (traduction libre) d’un point de vue professionnel et
personnel.
