La French-American Foundation a continué cette année
à développer ses activités dans le cadre de sa mission pour
le renforcement des relations entre la France et les ÉtatsUnis, autour de trois axes : les Programmes d’échanges, les
Rencontres et les Commissions de travail.
Créé en 1981, le programme « Young Leaders » compte
désormais près de 400 participants, et la session de
septembre 2012 s’est déroulée à Paris et au Havre.
Par ailleurs, la seconde édition du programme « Jeunes
Espoirs » se tiendra en février 2014 à Paris. Initié en 2012,
il s’adresse aux lycéens issus de milieux défavorisés,
sélectionnés pour l’excellence de leurs résultats scolaires,
et s’inscrit dans l’action globale de la French-American
Foundation en faveur de l’égalité des chances.
L’année 2012-2013 fut riche en rencontres, notamment à
l’occasion de l’élection présidentielle américaine. Ainsi, un
cycle de conférences consacrées aux élections s’est étendu
sur plusieurs mois grâce au soutien de nos membres et de
spécialistes de la politique américaine.
Nous avons poursuivi les « French-American Breakfast »,
organisés chaque mois autour d’une personnalité
française ou américaine. Parmi nos invités de cette année,
des ambassadeurs, des dirigeants d’entreprises, et des
personnalités politiques.
Enfin, nous avons continué à développer les commissions
de travail, dont l’objectif est de partager les pratiques des
deux côtés de l’Atlantique : les premiers travaux ont traité
de la gouvernance des entreprises et de l’énergie.
Nous avons d’autres projets pour 2013-2014, pour voir
notre institution jouer un rôle encore plus important dans
la relation franco-américaine.
Je remercie tous ceux qui s’engagent à nos côtés et nous
aident à porter cette ambition.

The French-American Foundation continued this year its
mission in reinforcing the relationship between France and
the United States, by developing the Exchange Programs,
the Meetings and the Working Committees.
Created in 1981, the “Young Leaders” program has today
over 400 participants, and the September 2012 edition
took place in Paris and Le Havre. Moreover, the second
edition of the “Jeunes Espoirs” program will be held in
Paris in February 2014. Initiated in 2012, this program
aims to give a unique experience to high school students
from underprivileged backgrounds and selected for their
outstanding academic results.
The year 2012-2013 was rich of meetings and exchanges,
notably because of the U.S. presidential election. A cycle
of conferences dedicated to the elections took place over
several months, thanks to the contribution of our members
and of the political specialists who came to speak at the
foundation’s events.
Our monthly « French-American Breakfast » have
welcomed a growing number of people, coming to hear a
French or American decision maker. Among our speakers,
we have welcomed this year ambassadors, business leaders,
and politicians.
Our working committees aim to share the best practices in
both France and the United States in the areas of corporate
governance and energy.
Many new projects will be developed in 2013-2014, to
make the Foundation play an even greater role in the
Franco-American relationship.
I would like to thank all of you for your support and for
helping us realize this ambition.

1976 in Paris and New York to advance transatlantic
dialogue. This goal is fully shared by the U.S. Embassy
in France and the Foundation’s work is essential
to the successful promotion of Franco-American
relations.
Cette année fut riche en échanges, au service de notre
objectif commun de soutenir les futurs leaders francoaméricains, notamment grâce à des programmes
d’échanges. Un exemple est le programme Young
Leaders, auquel ont participé en leur temps l’ancienne
Secrétaire d’État américaine, Madame Hillary Rodham
Clinton, et l’ancien Premier ministre et Maire de
Bordeaux, Monsieur Alain Juppé.
This year was rich in exchanges that address our
common goal of supporting future French and
American leaders, notably through exchange
programs. One example is the Young Leaders
program, in which both former Secretary of State
Hillary Rodham Clinton and former French Prime
Minister and Mayor of Bordeaux Alain Juppé have
taken part in years past.

se sont également associées pour la seconde année
consécutive au prix Washburne de l’innovation pour
l’égalité des chances, décerné afin d’encourager le
développement de programmes innovants qui favorisent
l’égalité des chances sur le lieu de travail.

collaborated with the U.S. Embassy for the second
year on the Washburne Award for Innovation in
Diversity to recognize innovative practices that
promote equal opportunity in the workplace.

Convaincues de la nécessité de créer un lieu de débats
et d’échanges réguliers pour approfondir les relations
entre la France et les États-Unis, plusieurs personnalités
des milieux politique, universitaire et économique donnent
en 1975 l’impulsion pour créer à Paris et à New York la
French-American Foundation.
L’annonce officielle est faite en 1976, lors d’un dîner
d’État à Washington réunissant les présidents Gerald Ford
et Valéry Giscard d’Estaing, à l’occasion des célébrations
du bicentenaire de la Déclaration d’Indépendance.
Cinq ans plus tard, le programme des « Young Leaders »
voit le jour. Il s’agit de la première grande initiative pour
bâtir des relations durables entre de jeunes personnalités
françaises et américaines appelées à de hautes fonctions.
D’autres programmes d’échanges et des cycles de
rencontres seront ensuite créés au fil des années pour
permettre à la French-American Foundation d’accomplir
sa mission et d’être aujourd’hui l’un des acteurs majeurs
de la relation entre la France et les États-Unis.

Convinced of the need to protect and develop
the historical bonds between France and the United
States, a number of leading political, academic, media
and business figures gathered in 1975 to create, in Paris
and in New York, the French-American Foundation.
The official announcement was made in 1976, for the
bicentennial of the Declaration of independence, during
a state dinner in Washington attended by Presidents
Gerald Ford and Valéry Giscard d’Estaing.
Five years later, the Foundation created the “Young
Leaders” program, a first major initiative to build lasting
relationships between young French and American highpotential talents.
Many other exchange programs and cycles of meetings
were created over the years, which allowed the FrenchAmerican Foundation to become one of the major
actors in the relationship between France and the
United States.

Parfaitement bilingue, DoUGLas KeNNeDY est né en 1955 à
New York, puis a vécu à Dublin avant de s’installer à Londres,
mais tient par-dessus tout à son pied-à-terre parisien, niché dans
une vieille ruelle de saint-Germain-des-Prés. Pourtant, l’écrivain
ne s’affiche guère dans les cafés branchés du boulevard ; son Paris
secret est celui des cinémas d’art et d’essai du quartier latin et
des quartiers populaires du Xe arrondissement. en 2007, il fut
élevé au rang de Chevalier de l’ordre des arts et des lettres.

New York, then lived in Dublin before settling down in London,

street of saint-Germain-des-Prés. However, the writer doesn’t

Programme phare de la French-American Foundation

Américains à fort potentiel de leadership, âgés de 30 à 40 ans,
et appelés à jouer un rôle important dans leur pays et dans les
relations franco-américaines.
Created in 1981, it is the flagship program of the FrenchAmerican Foundation. Every year, it selects French and
American talents, aged 30 to 40, and whose achievements
and leadership will lead them to play an important role in
their country and in the Franco-American relations.
Les candidats retenus participent à deux séminaires de cinq jours
chacun, répartis sur deux années consécutives – alternativement
en France et aux États-Unis – afin d’échanger sur des thèmes
majeurs communs aux deux pays et d’approfondir leur
compréhension mutuelle.
The selected candidates take part in two five-day seminars
over two consecutive years, alternatively in France and in the
United States, with the objective of exchanging views on the
major issues common to both countries, and improving their
mutual understanding.

Le vingt-cinquième séminaire annuel du programme « Young
Leaders » s’est tenu du 2 au 7 octobre 2012 à Paris et au Havre.
The twenty-fifth “Young Leaders” annual seminar was held in
2012 in Paris and Le Havre, from October 2-7.
À Paris, les Young Leaders se sont notamment entretenus avec
l’Ambassadeur des États-Unis, Charles H. Rivkin, la Ministre
des Droits des femmes et Porte-parole du Gouvernement,
Najat Vallaud-Belkacem, et le Président-Directeur Général de la
Société Générale, Frédéric Oudéa.

Au Havre, les participants ont été reçus par son Député-Maire
Édouard Philippe, Young Leader 2011. Lors de ce séjour, ils ont
rencontré des dirigeants économiques locaux, et ont également
pu visiter le port du Havre, les plages du débarquement, ainsi
que le musée d’Art moderne André Malraux.

In Le Havre, the participants were welcomed by Édouard
Philippe, Deputy and Mayor of Le Havre, and a 2011 Young
Leader. During their stay, they met with local business
leaders. The group also visited the port of Le Havre, the DDay beaches and the Museum of modern art André Malraux.

Le programme d’échanges « Jeunes Espoirs » a été créé
en 2012, avec pour objectif de donner une ouverture
internationale à de jeunes lycéens issus de milieux défavorisés
et à haut potentiel de réussite. Il encourage la création
de liens durables entre jeunes Français et Américains aux
parcours prometteurs.
La seconde édition se déroulera en février 2014 à Paris, avec 30
jeunes talents français et américains. Ces voyages constituent
une expérience internationale importante et formatrice pour
des lycéens amenés à suivre des parcours d’excellence.
The exchange program “Jeunes Espoirs” was initiated in 2012,
with the objective of giving an international experience to
young talents from underprivileged backgrounds, while
stimulating the creation of bonds between young French and
Americans with excellent academic results.
The second edition will take place in Paris in February 2014,
bringing together 30 French and American high school students
who have demonstrated a high potential for future success.
This program represents a unique international learning
experience for these young talents with a promising future.

Lancé en 2012 et décerné par l’Ambassade des États-Unis d’Amérique
en France, en partenariat avec l’American Chamber of Commerce in
France et la French-American Foundation – France, ce prix a pour but
d’encourager les entreprises françaises et américaines implantées
en France à promouvoir l’égalité des chances sur le lieu de travail,
en récompensant celles qui excellent dans le recrutement, la
formation et l’ascension professionnelle de tous leurs employés.
Created in 2012 in association with the United States
Embassy in France and the American Chamber of Commerce
in France, the Washburne Award honors an American and a
French company for their innovative actions in promoting
diversity in the workplace.
Pour cette seconde édition, la cérémonie de remise du Prix
s’est tenue le 14 mai 2013 à la résidence de l’Ambassadeur
des États-Unis d’Amérique en France, Charles H. Rivkin, et en
présence de Fleur Pellerin, Ministre déléguée auprès du Ministre
du Redressement productif, chargée des PME, de l’Innovation et
de l’Économie numérique, et Young Leader 2012.

For the second edition, the ceremony took place on May
14th, 2013 at the residence of the U.S. Ambassador to
France Charles H. Rivkin, with Fleur Pellerin, French Deputy
Minister in charge of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises,
Innovation and Digital Economy, and a 2012 Young Leader.
This year, the recipients of this award were Worldwide Flight
Services and Coca-Cola-Enterprises. They were given a medal
representing the face of Elihu Washburne, a leading 19th
century proponent of racial equality in the United States.

parcours ou d’un thème d’actualité.
The French-American Foundation organizes gatherings and
discussions with American business leaders, political figures,
and journalists during their visit in Paris to speak about their
experience or a news event.

Meeting with John Kerry
La French-American Foundation – France a été associée par
l’Ambassade des États-Unis en France à l’organisation de la
rencontre du nouveau Secrétaire d’État américain John Kerry
avec des chefs d’entreprise français, lors de sa première visite
officielle en France. Ce sont ainsi 80 personnalités, membres
de la Fondation et dirigeants de grandes entreprises qui ont pu
rencontrer John Kerry dans un contexte privilégié.
The French-American Foundation – France was associated
by the U.S. Embassy to France to the organization of the
meeting of the new American Secretary of State John Kerry
with French business leaders, during his first official visit in
France. Over 80 personalities, members of the Foundation
and business leaders met John Kerry in a privileged context.

En avril 2013, Stephen Breyer, juge de la Cour Suprême des ÉtatsUnis, devenait nouveau membre associé étranger de l’Académie
des Sciences Morales et Politiques. À cette occasion, une grande
cérémonie s’est tenue sous la Coupole en présence de nombreuses
personnalités françaises et américaines. La French-American
Foundation – France a été co-organisatrice de cet événement.
In April 2013, Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer became
a new associated foreign member of the Academy of Moral
and Political Sciences. On that occasion, a great ceremony
took place under the Dome of the Academy with a number
of French and American personalities. The French-American
Foundation – France co-organized this event.

American Week – HEC
HEC et la French-American Foundation – France se sont associées
pour lancer l’American Week sur le campus de l’école. Cette semaine
a pour objectif de permettre aux étudiants de mieux comprendre
les enjeux de la relation entre la France et les États-Unis.
HEC and the French American Foundation – France partnered to
launch the American Week on the school campus. This week aims
to give students a better understanding of the issues at stake in the
relationship between France and the United States.
La première édition s’est tenue en octobre 2012 et avait pour thème
l’élection présidentielle américaine. L’Ambassadeur des États-Unis
en France Charles H. Rivkin est venu ouvrir cette rencontre et s’est
adressé aux étudiants de l’école.

American presidential election. The United States Ambassador to

Le Gala annuel 2012 s’est déroulé au Conseil économique,
social et environnemental, avec comme invité d’honneur l’artiste
américain jeff Koons, sur le thème de « La contribution de l’art
à la relation franco-américaine ».
The 2012 annual Gala took place at the Economic, Social
and Environmental Council, with jeff Koons as the guest
of honor, on the theme “The contribution of art to FrancoAmerican relations”.
Cet événement a réuni plus de 550 personnes, dont de
nombreuses personnalités, parmi lesquelles Charles h.
Rivkin, Ambassadeur des États-Unis en France, Laurent
Fabius, Ministre des Affaires étrangères, jean-paul Delevoye,
Président du Conseil économique, social et environnemental, ou
encore jean-David Levitte, diplomate et ancien ambassadeur
de France aux États-Unis.
More than 550 guests were present, and among them a large
number of personalities, including Charles h. Rivkin, United
States Ambassador to France, Laurent Fabius, Minister of
Foreign Affairs, jean-paul Delevoye, President of the Economic,
Social and Environmental Council, and jean-David Levitte,
diplomat and former French Ambassador to the United States.
The Gala dinner was imagined by the chef Alain Ducasse.

années parisiennes sous le titre « L’Autobiographie d’Alice B. Toklas »,
qui devint un bestseller littéraire. elle habitait avec son frère
Leo et sa partenaire alice sur la rive gauche, au 27 rue de Fleurus.
Leur résidence « réunissait les courants esthétiques et intellectuels
qui ont contribué à définir le modernisme littéraire et artistique ».
in 1933, GerTrUDe sTeiN (1874-1946) published the memories
of her Paris years in “The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas”, which
became a bestseller. she shared living quarters with her brother Leo
and her partner alice on the Left Bank of Paris, at 27 rue de Fleurus.
Their residence “brought together confluences of talent and
thinking that would help define modernism in literature and art”.

de nombreux artistes, il s’installa rapidement à montparnasse. L’année
suivante, il fit pour la première fois un portrait de Gertrude stein, et
en obtint les droits exclusifs jusqu’en 1930. s’en suivirent 55 années à
montparnasse – excepté pendant la seconde Guerre mondiale – durant
lesquelles man ray devint l’un des artistes les plus influents du XXe siècle.

one year later, he became the exclusive photographer for Gertrude
stein. Living for the next 55 years in montparnasse – except
during the second World War – man ray became one of the most

Les premiers sujets abordés furent le mix énergétique, les
énergies renouvelables et l’énergie nucléaire.
The first discussed topics were the energy mix, sustainable
energies and nuclear energy.
En mars 2013, la commission a organisé une table ronde
internationale sur le thème de la régulation énergétique en
France et aux États-Unis.

erNesT HemiNGWaY (1899-1961) vécut à Paris dans un minuscule
appartement au 74 rue du Cardinal Lemoine, dans le quartier latin, et
louait une pièce dans un immeuble voisin pour y travailler. Gertrude
stein, figure de proue du modernisme à Paris, devint son mentor ;
elle le présenta aux artistes et écrivains expatriés de montparnasse
qu’elle nommait la « Génération perdue », une expression rendue
populaire par Hemingway dans « Le Soleil se lève aussi ».
Hemingway était présent lors du débarquement du 6 juin 1944,
bien qu’il ne put prendre part à l’atterrissage, les officiers l’ayant
jugé « trop précieux ». Le 25 août 1944, il prit part à la libération de
Paris, sans pour autant, contrairement à la légende, être le premier
à y entrer, ni avoir libéré le ritz.

erNesT HemiNGWaY (1899-1961) lived in Paris in a small apartment
at 74 rue du Cardinal Lemoine in the Latin Quarter, and he worked
in a rented room in a nearby building. Gertrude stein, one of the
greatest figures of modernism in Paris, became Hemingway’s mentor;
she introduced him to the expatriate artists and writers of the
montparnasse Quarter, whom she referred to as the “Lost Generation”
– a term Hemingway popularized in “The Sun Also Rises”.
Hemingway was present at the D-Day landing, although he was
kept on a landing craft because military officials considered
him “precious cargo”. on august 25, 1944 he was present at the
Liberation of Paris, although he was not, contrary to the legend,
the first to enter the city, nor did he liberate the ritz.

HeNrY miLLer (1891-1980) vécut à Paris entre 1930 et 1939, d’hôtel
en hôtel, avant de s’installer au 18 villa seurat. Cette période parisienne
fut hautement créative pour miller qui mit en place un réseau influent
d’auteurs autour de la villa seurat, lui-même étant inspiré par les
surréalistes français. son premier livre, « Tropique du Cancer » (1934), fut
interdit aux États-Unis ; les suivants, introduits clandestinement dans son
pays natal, ont contribué à donner à miller une réputation avant-gardiste.
HeNrY miLLer (1891-1980) lived in Paris from 1930 to 1939, moving
mostly from hotel to hotel until he settled at 18 villa seurat. This period in
Paris was highly inspirational for miller, who created an influential network
of authors circulating around the villa seurat, himself being also influenced
by the French surrealists. His first book, “Tropic of Cancer” (1934), was
banned in the United states; the following ones were smuggled into his
native land and contributed to build miller an avant-garde reputation.

gauche de Paris, alors en plein radicalisme culturel. il y restera la
plus grande partie de sa vie, durant laquelle il y sera considéré non
seulement comme un écrivain afro-américain influent, mais également
comme un écrivain exilé, de par sa grande connaissance du monde et
l’impact de celle-ci sur sa vie et son œuvre. Baldwin fut élevé au rang
de Commandeur de la Légion d’honneur par le gouvernement français
en 1986.
James BaLDWiN (1924-1987) moved from New York to Paris in 1948
to find himself involved in the cultural radicalism of the Left Bank. He
lived as an expatriate in France for most of his later life, during which
he was seen not only as an influential african american writer but also
as a writer in exile, especially because of his numerous experiences
outside the United states and the impact on his life and writing. James
Baldwin was made a Commandeur de la Légion d’honneur by the French
government in 1986.
