ASKING QUESTIONS IN FRENCH
Learning How To Ask Questions:
The interrogative form can either be affirmative or negative.
a. Affirmative = Tu manges un orange
b. Negative = Tu ne manges pas un orange
Ne goes before the verb
Pas goes after the verb

a. Every sentence has a subject , verb, object etc

To ask a question you simply put the verb before the subject or pronoun.
In this case you say Manges-tu un orange? You must put a hyphen after the verb when you
use a pronoun.
EXCEPTION FOR PRONOUNCIATION
When you use il/elle/ils/elles and want to make a question you must add in a t
e.g. Mange-t-il un orange? Va-t-elle au magasin ce soir?
2. Est-ce que

You use est-ce que at the beginning of a sentence
e.g Est-ce que tu manges un orange? (affirmative)
e.g. Est-ce que tu ne manges pas un orange?

You always drop the e of que if the preceding word begins with a vowel or h mute.
E.g Est-ce qu’il y a un avion pour Dublin ce soir?

If the verb already ends in t or in the third person singular/plural you do not add on
another t
E.g. Finit-il son devoir = Is he finishing his homework
E.g. Prend-il son repas = Is he t aking his meal
3. Raising your voice at the end of a sentence

Vous partez pour Dublin? If you don’t raise your voice you are simply making a
statement. A French person recognises that you are forming a question when
lifting your voice at the end of the phrase.
