Doucement mais sûrement ! Le quartet de l'Ontario nous revient avec un
album plus mélodique que ses précédents. Le secret de Liam ? Dénicher Mr
Robinson de Venice Beach ! Depuis « Dead Set On Living » le groupe s'est
autorisé de nouvelles influences ce qui nourrit davantage leur singularité.
Justement nous avons interviewé Liam Cormier qui nous en dit plus sur ce
nouvel opus et avec qui j'ai eu l'honneur de faire mon premier interview. A
noter : « Searching For Zero » sortira le 9 Mars et sera de passage au petit

Elycx (Rock'N'Balls) : Hello Liam, je suis heureuse de faire mon premier interview
d'ouverture pour le webzine avec vous !
Liam Cormier : Je suis heureux d'être votre première interview ! Je suis impatient d'être le 9
Mars pour la sortie de l'album, je suis trop content que tout le monde découvre ce que
nous avons concocté !
E : Alors « Searching For Zero » votre cinquième opus sortira le 9 mars. Comment vous
sentez vous à l'approche de sa sortie ?
Liam : « Searching For Zero » évoque le sujet de trouver une nouvelle façon d'aller de
l'avant en évitant les obstacles physiques et mentaux pour aller vers du positif.
E : Peux-tu nous expliquer la signification « Searching For Zero » de ce nouveau disque ?
Que représente l'artwork ?
Liam : L'artwork a été réalisé par notre bon ami Andrew Mc Cracken qui a travaillé sur tous
nos albums et fait un travail incroyable en créant des images et un sens à chaque
chanson.
E : Quelle ambition nourrissez vous avec ce nouvel album ?
Liam : Nous sommes juste fiers de ce que nous avons pu accomplir avec cet
enregitrement, de comment nous avons pu nous pousser à faire le meilleur de nous en
tant que musiciens.
E : Comment s'est passée votre collaboration avec le producteur Ross Robinson qui a
quand même produit plusieurs groupes emblématiques tels que Slipknot, Korn, At The
Drive In ?
Liam : Nous avons entendu que Ross cherchait à travailler avec des nouvelles bandes
alors je lui ai passé un appel et nous avons sympathisé tout de suite. Trois semaines plus
tars, nous étions dans sa maison de dynamitage avec notre album. Je ne pouvais pas être
plus heureux de la façon dont ça a marché, Ross a été le meilleur producteur pour cet
album.
E : Justement, quel impact a t’il eu sur l'écriture et l'enregistrement de « Searching For Zero
»?
Liam : Nous avons tous écris ensemble dans notre studio, juste les quatre d'entre nous
dénigraient les idées au fil des jours. Donc en fin de compte, c'est vraiment un album de
Cancer Bats et non pas d'un seul d'entre nous qui aurait tout écrit.
E : « Sattelites » annonce le ton général de cet album... quel est le premier morceau vous
ayez écrit pour cet album?
Liam : Nous avons écrit beaucoup de morceaux au début je ne peux pas vraiment me
rappeler du premier haha ce n'était pas « Satellites », on a du l'écrire à mi-chemin.Nous
avons écrit vingt cinq morceaux et on en a choisi d'enregistrer les quatorze dernières. Je
suis sûr que tu comprendras ma frustration haha !
E : « Beelzebub » sonne moins sauvage que vos précédents. Ressentez vous une envie de
vous assagir ?
Liam : On essayait de faire quelque chose que nous n'avions encore jamais essayé avant.
Faire une chanson heavy qui est plus dans les vibes du style Sabbat 70's. J'adore cette
chanson et je suis préssé de la jouer.

E : Le son de « Dusted » sonne doom. Pouvez vous nous en dire plus sur ce morceau ?
Liam : Dusted comme Beelzebub, ces chansons ont étés très difficiles à écrire pour nous,
c'est super heavy, mais à des moments c'est le chant le plus clair que je n'ai jamais
chanté ! Le refrain de la chanson, j'en suis amoureux ! Le truc le plus cool à propos de la
chanson c'est qu'au moment où je chantais lors de l'enregistrement, Ross me demandait
de m'imaginer chanter cette chanson dans une petite salle intimiste en live, et j'arrivais à
rendre cette chanson encore plus intense ! Puis il me disait "Bon, maintenant imagines-toi
chanter cette chanson toujours, mais cette fois imagines que tu commences le show par
cette chanson, comment tu la chanterais dans ce cas là ?" Haha, c'était tellement fou de
s'imaginer comme ça ! Haha
E : Les riffs de guitare sont tres sabbathiens...
Liam : Je suis d'accord., je pense que Jaye et Scott ont écrit une tonne de riffs géniaux
aux influences de Sabbath, cette influence est donc bien présente dans nos chansons.
E : On remarque dans ce nouvel album un son beaucoup plus mélodique. Est-ce un choix
personnel ou bien une idée du producteur ?
Liam : Nous avons écrit beaucoup de mélodies dans les morceaux avant même que nous
soyons entrés dans le studio avec Ross mais j'ai vraiment senti qu'il savait ce qu'il faisait à
vraiment pousser ces idées mélodiques et pas se contenter de rester dans une formule de
metal classique. Ross est l'homme.
E : D'ailleurs, votre voix semble s'être développée davantage...
Liam : Oui je pense que pour beaucoup de raisons je n'ai jamais fait de différents styles de
chant parce que ma voix n'était pas assez travaillée. Il n'y a pas moyen, j'aurais pu
enregistrer cet album en 2005 ou 2008, il m'aurait fallu dix ans de cris pour arriver à pousser
autant comme çà.
E : Ya t'il une chanson qui vous tient particulièrement à cœur dans ce nouvel opus ?
Liam : Il y a beaucoup de chansosns très personnelles sur cet album et j'ai essayé de me
plonger vraiment dans toutes les chansons. Tous les morceaux de cet album ont des
thèmes lourds.
E : Cancer Bats a été formé en 2004 et nous sommes à présent en 2015, cela vous fait plus
de 10 ans de carrière. Qu'en pensez vous ?
Liam : Oui, c'est fou quand je fais un retour au cours des années et que je pense à tout ce
que nous avons fait, tournées et évolution de notre son, c'est génial.
E : Vous jouerez à Paris le 20 Avril au petit bain avec les anglais de While She Sleeps, le
bateau risque de tanguer ! Que pensez vous de l'accueil du public dans la capitale
française ? Ca pogote bien ?
Liam : Nous avons toujours eu des concerts impressionnants en France et on a dejà hâte
de revenir y faire un tour avec cet album.

E : AxeWound est il toujours d'actualité? Y aura t'il un album apres « Vultures » ?
Liam : Matt est super occupé pour le nouvel enregistrement du prochain Bullet pour
l'instant, mais j'espère que nous serons en mesure de jouer plus de lives avec AxeWound.
Nous avons à peine eu l'occasion de nous revoir alors j'espère que ça va marcher et que
nous pourrons jouer plus de concerts et avoir un autre enregistrement ensemble.
E : Vous sentez vous toujours aussi barrés ? (rires)
Liam : Je ne suis pas sûr d'avoir compris mais FUCKIN EH !
E : Question typique de Rock'N'Balls quel serait votre Top 3 des meilleurs albums de metal
de tous les temps, et pourquoi ?
Liam : #1 Black Sabbath : Black Sabbath. Toujours classique mais quoi de mieux ! #2
Sepultura : Chaos AD - On en écoute souvent, et sans ça plein de groupes de hardcore
n'auraient pas leurs bases. #3 Entombed : Wolverine Blues - On en écoute tout le temps, s'
ils n’existaient pas nous n'aurions pas existé non plus.

about this new album and with whom I have had the honor to make my first

Elycx (Rock'N'Balls) : Hello Liam, I'm happy to make my first interview for the webzine open
with you! So "Searching For Zero" your fifth album will be released on March 9th. How do
you feel when approaching its release?
Liam Cormier : I'm happy to be your first interview! I can't wait for March 9th to hit and for
the new album to be out, Im so pumped for everyone to hear the new jams!
E: Can you explain the meaning of "Searching For Zero" of this new drive? What does the
artwork?
Liam : Searching For Zero is all about finding that new common ground to move forward,
ove coming any obstacles physical or mental an then carrying on to a possitive place. The
art work was done by our good friend Andrew McCracken who has worked on all our
albums and did an amazing job creating images and meaning to each song.
E: What you feed ambition with this new album?
Liam : Were all just really proud of what we've able to accomplish with this new record
and how we've able to really push ourselves as musicians.
E: How did your collaboration with producer Ross Robinson, who nevertheless produced
several iconic bands such as Slipknot, Korn, At The Drive In?
Liam : We heard that Ross was looking to work with new bands so I gave him a call and
we hit it off right away, 3 weeks later we were all in his house blasting through our album. I
couldn't be happier the way it worked out, Ross is the best dude ever.
E: Exactly what impact you had on the writing and recording of "Searching For Zero"?
Liam : We all write everything together in our practice room, just the 4 of us bashing out
ideas all day. So in the end its really a Cancer Bats album and not just one of us wiriting
everything.
E: "Satellites" announces the general tone of this album ... what is the first song you wrote
for this album?
Liam : We wrote so many songs at the start I really can't remember which one was first
haha it wasn't Satellites, that one maybe was only wirtten half way through. We wrote 25
songs and worked our way Slowly but surely! The quartet of Ontario returns with a more

E: "Beelzebub" sounds less savage than your previous. Do you feel an urge to settle down
to you?
Liam : I think Beelzebub was us trying to do something we had never tried before. Making
a really heavey song that's more in the rhelm of Sabbath style 70's vibes. I love that song
and can't wait to start playing it live.

E: The sound of "Dusted" sounds doom. Can you tell us more about this song?
Liam : Dusted like Beelzebub were very different songs for us to write, where its still super
heavy but at times it's some of the cleanest "singing" parts I've had. The chorus of that song
is such a crusher. The coolest thing about that song is that when I was tracking the vocals
Ross would always ask me to picture myslef singing that song live but in a small venue and
how I could still make it sound intense. I'd finish the take and then he would say "ok now
picture youre playing this song in a small venue and youre starting your set with it, how
would you sing this song?" haha such a crazy mindset to try and place yourself in !
E: The guitar riffs are very sabbathiens ...
Liam : I agree, I think Jaye and Scott wrote a ton of awesome riffs and tht Sabbath
influence has for sure come through in our songs.
E: We note in this new album a much more melodic. Is it a personal or an idea by
producer choice?
Liam : We wrote a lot of melody into the songs even before we got into the studio with
Ross, but i really felt that he understood what needed to happen to really push those
melodic ideas and not just have it remain in a classic metal formula. Ross is the man.
E: In fact, your voice seems to have developed more ...
Liam : I agree with that as well, I think a lot of the reason why I never did a lot of different
style of singing was that my voice wasn't strong enough at the time to pull it off. There is no
way I could have recorded this album in 2005 or 2008 my voice needed 10 years of
screaming to get to this point where I could push it like that.
E: Are there a song that is particularly close to heart in this new album?
Liam : Theres a lot of really personal songs on this album and I really tried to dive into that
with every song. Satellites, Arsenic In The Year Of The Snake, Beelzebub, Cursed With A
Conscience, All Hail, Buds, Dusted all have super heavy themes and come from a real
personal place that i wanted to open myself up to. This is for sure our most personal record
lyrically.
E: Cancer Bats was formed in 2004 and we are now in 2015, it makes you more than 10year career. What about you?
Liam : Yeah it's crazy loking back over the years and even to think that weve made it this
far and are still going to be touring and putting out a record, it's awesome.
E: You will play in Paris on April 20 at the small bath with English While She Sleeps, the boat
may sway! What do you think the public reception in the French capital? although it
pogots?
Liam : We've always had awesome shows in France and we already can't wait to come
back and tour more of France on this album.

E: AxeWound it is always up to date? Will there be an album after "Vultures"?
Liam : Matt's super busy with the new Bullet record for now, but hopefully we'll be able to
play more shows with AxeWound. We've barely had a chance to tour so hopefully it'll work
out and we can play more shows and hopefully write another record together.
E: You feel still barred? (laughs)
Liam : Not sure what you mean but FUCKIN EH!
E: Typical Question of Rock'N'Balls what would your Top 3 of the best metal albums of all
time and why?
Liam : #1 Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath - still a classic and nothing can beat that intro!!!
#2 Sepultura - Chaos AD - still jam it all the time and without it most hardcore bands
wouldnt have half their riffs. #3 Entombed - Wolverine Blues - We all jam this album
constantly and if it wasnt for them Cancer Bats wouldnt exist!
