Only two days left before the submission deadline of Friday January 29th for this year's Annual Conference in
Quebec City, May 11th-13th!
For general information about the next Annual Conference, please consult the December issue of the CCB. A link to the
conference website has also been posted on the CAC website (where documents pertaining to the Annual General
Meeting will be uploaded in April).
Once you reach the Conference website, it is possible to check it out without signing in. You just need to click on “HOME”.
Note that the website will open by default on the French page. You can select “English” in the "LANGUE" menu on the
right. By the way, please remember to consult the detailed instructions in the December issue when you submit your
abstract: a bug in the program will force you to switch back to French.

with a change in publication date. The journal will now be published on a set schedule in March, July, and November. The
upcoming subscription year will begin with Volume 13, Issue 1, March 2016.

Mouseion is an official publication of the Classical Association of Canada. The journal aims to be a distinctly
comprehensive Canadian journal of Classical Studies, publishing articles and reviews in both French and English. One
issue annually is normally devoted to archaeological topics, including field reports, finds analysis, and the history of art in
antiquity. The other two issues welcome work in all areas of interest to scholars; this includes both traditional and
innovative research in philology, history, philosophy, pedagogy, and reception studies, as well as original work in and
translations into Greek and Latin.
You will continue to receive your print copies and online access through Project MUSE as new issues are published.
Finally, we take this opportunity to introduce two new co-Editors of the journal: Dr. Kathryn Simonsen (Department of
Classics, Memorial University of Newfoundland) and Dr. Peter O'Brien (Department of Classics, Dalhousie University).

Call for applications — This scholarship is offered in memory of Desmond Conacher, formerly Professor of Classics at
Trinity College, Toronto, Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and Honorary President of the Classical Association of

Canada. Its purpose is to assist and encourage a young scholar entering graduate studies in classics. The scholarship is
administered by the Classical Association of Canada. One award of $2,500 is offered each year.
Eligibility and criteria — Applicants must be Canadian students (citizens or permanent residents) intending to enter the
first year of graduate studies in a classics or similar programme at a Canadian university. Specializations within the general
area of classics such as ancient history, ancient philosophy, and classical archaeology are eligible. Applicants must be less
than 28 years of age on January 1st of the year of application. The main criteria are academic achievement, professional
promise, and an appropriate undergraduate preparation.
Application procedure — Applications in electronic form should reach Professor Mark Joyal, Chair of the CAC Awards

The American School of Classical Studies at Athens seeks an established scholar with extensive experience in Greece for
the position of the Andrew W. Mellon Professor of Classical Studies. The Mellon Professor organizes and conducts the
academic program of the School in collaboration with the Director and the Assistant Director and must be able to provide a
graduate-level introduction to the sites, monuments, museums and topography of Greece as well as advise students of the
School in their research. In addition, as one of the officers of the School, the Mellon Professor participates in the
operations of the School.
The appointment is for a three-year term beginning July 1, 2017. Salary commensurate with rank and experience. Benefits
include pension contribution, health insurance, travel budget, and housing on campus. The incumbent is not seeking a

PANEL ON LATIN EPIC SPONSORED BY THE AMERICAN CLASSICAL LEAGUE

Sponsored by the American Classical League and organized by Ronnie Ancona, Hunter College and CUNY Graduate
Center, and Alison Keith, University of Toronto.
The American Classical League invites scholars and teachers to submit abstracts for its panel session on Latin Epic at the
Toronto, Canada meeting of the Society for Classical Studies, in January 2017. We are particularly interested in papers
that address the reception of Vergil in later Latin epic and in papers that address Vergil's Latin epic predecessors.
Papers accepted for the panel will be considered for publication in The Classical Outlook, journal of the American Classical
League.
Abstracts should be submitted to Ronnie Ancona ([email protected]). They should conform to the instructions for
the format of individual abstracts that appear in the SCS Program Guide. The deadline for the submission of abstracts in
March 1, 2016.

Voyages and Journeys in Antiquity

March 18-19, 2016

The communities of the ancient Mediterranean may seem, in comparison with our modern, globalized society, somewhat
less reliant on the close cultural and economic ties that we take for granted. Yet, from Homer to Virgil, from Herodotus to
Julius Caesar, from the Greek colonization of Southern Italy to the campaigns of Alexander, we are constantly reminded of
the vital interchange of ideas and materials that took place between ancient cultures. This conference aims to explore the
role of travel in creating and maintaining these connections, whether in the spheres of archaeology, economics, philosophy
or literature.
We invite submissions for papers related to the theme of travel in the ancient world. Relevant issues for discussion may
include (but are certainly not limited to):
Geography and space in ancient literature
Travel in Greek and Roman military narratives
Nomadism in ancient literature and historiography
Representations of the oikoumene
Maritime trade in the Mediterranean
The role of maps in ancient travel
Pilgrimage (e.g. in the Hellenistic period, in the Roman empire, etc.)
Journeys to the underworld (katabases)
Nostoi in epic, Athenian drama, the ancient novel, etc.
Metempsychosis and eschatological narratives
Xenia and diplomatic embassies
This conference is directed towards graduate students of all disciplines whose research touches on any aspect of ancient
Greek or Roman culture. Our keynote speaker will be Professor Jonathan Burgess from the Department of Classics at the
University of Toronto. Professor Burgess’ work on the Greek epic cycle, performance and orality, and intertextuality in
ancient and modern travel literature has been, and continues to be, extremely influential.
Papers should be 15-20 minutes in length. Please send abstracts of no more than 300 words to

Funding for the Professional Development of Classics Teachers

The Society for Classical Studies (SCS) wants teachers of classics to be aware of the following programs that are intended
to contribute to their professional development and the success of their students. Click on the relevant URL below to see a

endowment established by former students of David D. and Rosemary H. Coffin. The Pedagogy and Zeph Stewart Latin

for Travel in Classical Lands

The Fellowship is intended to give secondary-school teachers of Greek or Latin in North America the opportunity to enrich

$2,750. Application materials must be received no later than 5:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) on Friday, February 19, 2016.

The Canadian Institute in Greece invites applications for the Elisabeth Alföldi-Rosenbaum Fellowship to be held at the
Institute in Athens from 1 September 2016 to 31 May 2017.
The applicant must be pursuing graduate or post-doctoral studies and have a clear need to work in Greece, and must be a
Canadian citizen or landed immigrant. The areas of research should follow those of Professor Alföldi-Rosenbaum, namely
Hellenistic to Early Byzantine, in the fields of archaeology, art history, history, epigraphy or related topics.
In any subsequent publication of the research work done under the auspices of this fellowship, the recipient will
acknowledge both the Canadian Institute in Greece and the Elisabeth Alföldi-Rosenbaum Fellowship.
The Fellow will spend at least nine months resident in Athens and, in addition to his or her studies, the Fellow will help the
Assistant Director of CIG with the work in the office and library (10 hours per week). Therefore, some previous experience
in Greece and some knowledge of Modern Greek is an asset.

The Fellow will receive a stipend of C$8,000 and free accommodation in the CIG hostel for the nine-month period of the
fellowship (1 September to 31 May).

The Crake Foundation and the Department of Classics at Mount Allison University are pleased to announce the Crake
Doctoral Fellowship in Classics for the academic year 2016-2017.
The Crake Fellowship is non-renewable, open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents who, at the time of taking up
the fellowship, have completed all course and residential requirements for a Doctorate in Classics, passed all preliminary
examinations and completed the research for the thesis, and who can reasonably be expected to finish the doctorate
during the year of the fellowship.
The holder will be asked to teach one course in each of the Fall and Winter terms, give a public lecture, and be in Sackville
from September to the end of April. In 2016-2017 the holder of the Crake Fellowship will receive $30,500 (CDN), plus
benefits including moving expenses, an amount for professional development, and health and dental insurance.

of reference. The thesis supervisor should be asked to write concerning the subject of the thesis and the expected ate for

As part of a research program on papyri purchased in 1920 by Bernard Grenfell and Francis Kelsey for the University of
Michigan, I am soliciting applications for up to two MA students to start September 2016. The research program involves
the publication of new material from this purchase, as well as the exploration of previously published texts’ connections to
other collections worldwide.
The MA in Classics at the University of Manitoba is a two-year degree with 12 credit hours of required coursework (with the
option of up to 12 additional hours) and a thesis. Preference will be given to applicants with a four-year BA and at least two
years of coursework in both ancient Greek and Latin; proficiency in Greek is particularly essential. Though the call for
applications is not limited to Canadians or Canadian residents, the Faculty of Graduate Studies at the University of
Manitoba requires a minimum period of residency in Winnipeg to complete coursework and other program requirements.
Thesis topics will build upon the papyrological and philological training provided in the program, and may include the study
of papyri from the 1920 purchase. Though these are principally documentary, students with interests in literary texts
preserved on papyrus, or in Greek literature more broadly, are welcome to apply, as well. The selected applicant(s) will
receive a minimum of CAD $15,000 per year for each of the two years. This support does not include tuition and fees.
Additional funds will be available for summer travel to the Michigan collection in Ann Arbor, as well as for conference
travel.
Winnipeg has a thriving community of Classicists: the local chapter of the Archaeological Institute of America hosts a
popular lecture series, and a bilateral colloquium is held semi-annually with colleagues at the University of Winnipeg. The
expertise of that institution’s faculty, which counts an historian of Roman Egypt with papyrological interests among its
number, may be available to applicants. Other research programs of Classics faculty at the University of Manitoba which
may complement applicants’ research interests include Greek economic history and the archaeology of trade, the art and
archaeology of the Roman Empire, and the manuscript tradition of Plato.

Narthaki, Nomos (Province of) Larissa, Greece
2016 will mark the twelfth season of the Kastro Kallithea Archaeological Project (KKAP), a project conducted by the
University of Alberta and the Council of Antiquities in Larissa, Greece under the aegis of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture
and the Canadian Institute in Athens. Over the years, the archaeological project included mapping, surveying and
excavating a very well preserved Classical/Hellenistic city located in central Greece. This season, the plan is continue the
study of the artefacts found in ‘Building 10’, a presumably domestic structure which the team has been excavating over the
past years.
The site at Kastro Kallithea is an ancient fortified city located on a 600 meter high hill in Thessaly, Greece, with a surface
area of 34 hectares. The city had an acropolis, impressive defensive structures and an intact city plan with the architecture
of many houses, and public structures visible at the surface. The archaeological fieldwork at the site has now reached a
point where we need to examine the finds more closely.
Students will be introduced to artefact processing and will acquire knowledge about the site, its topography and its
archaeological/historical setting as well as the archaeology of domestic space. You will learn to recognize and date the
objects found during the excavations and you will help in processing them. This includes drawing, describing and
photographing various types of artefacts, such as pottery and metal implements. You will also be introduced to
numismatics, working with the original coins from the site. In order to contextualize our archaeological observations, we will
visit museums and other sites in the region as part of the course.
This six credit course is open to students with a background in classics, classical archaeology, anthropology, art history
and ancient history. Students from other disciplines may apply too but are encouraged to contact the project director prior
to sending in their application.
These courses will partially fulfill the requirements for the BA with a major in Classics, BA with minor in Classics and the
Faculty of Arts Certificate in International Learning.

ANTICIPATED COSTS
Standard University of Alberta tuition and fees apply ($1,064.16 CAD for Canadian citizens and permanent residents;
$4,015.20 CAD for international students). Additional costs including non instructional fees, accommodation, meals,
airfare, ground transportation and excursions are estimated to be $2,500 CAD. University of Alberta students will receive

ASCSA SUMMER SESSIONS

The summer program of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens consists of two six week sessions designed
for those who wish to become acquainted with Greece and its major monuments, and to improve their understanding of the
country’s landscape, history, literature, and culture from antiquity to the present.
The Directors for the 2016 Summer Sessions are Session I (June 13 through July 27): Professor Denver Graninger,
University of California, Riverside; Session II (June 20 through August 3): Professor Amy Smith, University of Reading.
Eligibility: Enrollment is open to graduate and advanced undergraduate students and to high school and college instructors
of classics and related subjects and is limited to twenty participants per session. The language of instruction is English.
Applicants who are not enrolled or teaching at English-speaking colleges, universities, or schools, are required to supply
acceptable evidence of proficiency in English.
Format: The ASCSA summer session has provided the most extensive exposure to Greece, ancient and modern, for
generations of students of Classics and related fields. It has a strong academic component with participants researching
and presenting topics on site and offers unique opportunities to interact with archaeologists in the field. Roughly half of
each session is spent in travel throughout Greece. Three trips of varying duration give the participant an introduction to the
major archaeological sites and museum collections in North and Central Greece, the Peloponnese, and Crete. The
remainder of the session is devoted to study of the museums and monuments of Athens and the surrounding area with day
trips to such sites as Marathon, Sounion, and Eleusis. The summer session's commitment to presenting a comprehensive
view of Greece's rich history leads to long days and extensive walking in the hot Mediterranean climate, and participants
should be prepared for a rigorous program of study.
Cost: Fees for the 2016 program are $5,000. This includes tuition, room for the entire six-week period, partial board in
Athens, travel within Greece, and museum and site fees. International airfare, some meals, and incidental expenses are
the participant's responsibility. Financial aid is available in the form of ASCSA scholarships, and many classical
professional organizations have funding opportunities. They are awarded on the basis of academic merit. More information
