Curriculum Pathways
The Atlantic Summer Institute is a curriculum-based learning institute. Curriculum is
defined as a pathway for learning designed to meet stated outcomes through activities and
materials. The ASI Curriculum offers learning designed to create healthier and safer
communities.
How does this benefit me? The ASI is a program of progressive learning, which means
that you will learn more each year that you attend. The workshops are participatory and
interactive, encouraging you to share ideas and learn from the experiences of other
participants. On completion of the curriculum, the ASI provides a Certificate of
Participation, which may serve as a continuing education credit in some work settings.
The ASI offers three Curriculum Pathways:
1. Foundations: Preparing to work together across sectors and cultures
2. Application: Advancing learning in a case study approach to planning
3. Specialization: Strengthening skills for community health and safety
Please note: The Foundations Pathway is a pre-requisite for the other two
pathways. This year, there is a one day pre-Institute workshop for the
Foundations Pathway, being offered August 21. Please see separate
registration form for this workshop http://thequaich.pe.ca/workshops.asp
The Application Pathway will be offered by webinar and is not being offered
at the ASI in August.
Four Specialization Pathway workshops are being offered in 2012.
Workshop descriptions follow.

Specialization Workshops offered in 2012:
Each year, the Specialization Pathway focuses on a given area of study - leadership,
evidence, and strengthening community action. The Specialization Pathway is for those
who are involved in community planning and partnering between sectors, and want to
learn more about providing leadership in their communities.
Workshops have been pilot tested in English, i.e., leadership (2007 and 2011), evidence
(2008) and community action (2010) and are now ready for delivery in both official
languages. This year, the ASI will deliver four Specialization Curriculum Pathways
(workshop series):
1. Gender and Community Leadership
Based on the successful workshops piloted during summer 2011 and winter 2012 as
part of a project funded by Status of Women Canada called “Building Leadership
Capacity of Women and Girls in Atlantic Canada”, ASI 2012 will again offer a four-part
workshop series on gender and community leadership.
The workshops will offer participants an engaging learning experience, focusing on:
a) Understanding the value of women’s leadership to women – and men
b) Becoming the leader I am meant to be
c) Acting on a positive vision for a better society
d) Building a strong network
By participating in this series of workshops, participants will be empowered to recognize
their leadership capabilities, be motivated to take action on underlying conditions in
their home communities and create a plan with a commitment to action.
2. Young Women and Community Leadership – Engaging for Change
This pathway is designed specifically for young women aged 18 – 25 who are involved or
interested in becoming more involved in leadership in their communities, and who want
to connect with other young women who are engaging for change across Atlantic Canada.
If you want to start a program, fix something that’s not working, or improve on
something that’s already great, this is the pathway for you!
Through an exciting, experiential program, participating young women will have the
opportunity to:
a) Develop new skills and ideas about leadership
b) Think and talk about unique opportunities and challenges for young women
leaders
c) Develop a network of other young leaders and mentors
d) Create a plan for something they want to work on in their communities
The goal of this pathway is for young women to develop new leadership ideas and skills,
a plan for how they can make a difference in their communities, and a network of friends
and supporters who can help them turn their ideas into realities!

3. Strengthening Community Action
This pathway provides opportunities for participants to advance their knowledge on
assessing community strengths, community mobilization, developing community
capacity, and strengthening skills for collaboration – all critical factors in creating and
maintaining healthy, safe and resilient communities.
The focus will be on community action to build active communities, including:
a)
b)
c)
d)
Assessing community strengths
Community engagement and mobilization
Community capacity building
Strategies for community action
‘Taking it home’ is a key emphasis of this series. Participants will be challenged to
develop plans and activities that they can apply in their home communities to mobilize
action.
4. Building and Using Evidence to Plan for Active Communities
This pathway will equip participants with models, skills and processes to find, collect,
evaluate and use evidence. They will be challenged to use evidence to support the work
of building safe, healthy, active and sustainable communities in Atlantic Canada.
Upon
a)
b)

completion of four modules, participants will have focused on:
Understanding evidence
Finding and interpreting evidence
Using evidence to develop and evaluate policies and programs
Appreciating the use of evidence in building policies and programs
Participants will develop specific action plans and will be encouraged to continue
working on their actions at home - examining evidence, consulting colleagues and allies,
looking for opportunities to use evidence for positive change.
Each pathway is a series of four comprehensive and interactive workshops. You will
need to indicate your choice of workshop series (pathway) when you register.
