WAY-WASH NETWORK ORGANIZED A ROUNDTABLE
ON AFRICAN YOUTH EMPLOYMENT
IN THE WATER SECTOR
Le samedi 9 avril 2016, le Réseau West African Youth for Water
Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (WAY-WASH) a organisé, à
Ouagadougou, au Burkina Faso, une table-ronde sur le secteur
de l’eau et l’employabilité des jeunes. A travers cette tableronde, WAY-WASH entendait créer un cadre d’échanges entre
les professionnels et les étudiants qui souhaitent se spécialiser
dans le secteur de l’eau. Dr. Lakhdar Boukerrou, Directeur
Régional de USAID WA-WASH a participé à cette table-ronde.
Saturday, April 9 2016, the West African Youth for Water
Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (WAY-WASH) network
organized, in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, a roundtable on
youth employment in the water sector. Through this
roundtable, WAY-WASH intended to create a discussion
framework between professionals and students who wish to
specialize in the water sector. Dr. Lakhdar Boukerrou, USAID
WA-WASH Regional Director participated in this roundtable.
Créé en juin 2015, avec l’appui de USAID WA-WASH, le réseau
WAY-WASH est un regroupement de jeunes Ouest-Africains dont
l’objectif est d’améliorer les conditions de vie des populations
dans le domaine de l’eau, de l’hygiène et de l’assainissement.
Pour concrétiser cet objectif, il est nécessaire pour les membres
de WAY-WASH, les étudiants et jeunes professionnels de
comprendre les enjeux du secteur de l’eau et les opportunités
d’emploi qu’il peut offrir. Le réseau était initialement formé
d’anciens stagiaires et boursiers de USAID WA-WASH.
Established in June 2015, with the support of USAID WA-WASH,
WAY-WASH network brings together young West Africans
whose objective is to improve the living conditions of people in
the field of water, sanitation and hygiene. To achieve this goal,
it is necessary for members of WAY-WASH, students and young
professionals to understand the water sector issues and the
employment opportunities it can offer. The network was
initially composed of former USAID WA-WASH interns and
scholarship recipients.
Confrontée à un fort taux de chômage, la jeunesse constitue la
frange la plus importante de la population africaine. Considérée
comme source de vie, l’eau peut être aussi une source d’emploi
pour cette jeunesse. A la table-ronde, de nombreux étudiants et
jeunes professionnels se sont familiarisés avec les différents
métiers de l’eau. Les échanges avec des professionnels aguerris
les ont surtout convaincus qu’au de-là des emplois classiques
d’ingénieurs et de techniciens, il existe de nombreuses autres
opportunités dans le secteur. Pour saisir ces opportunités, Dr.
Lakhdar Boukerrou les a encouragés à être ambitieux, se fixer
des objectifs et persévérer dans la quête de l’expérience. En
outre, il a invité la jeunesse à rechercher l’excellence afin
d’apporter l’innovation nécessaire pour le développement du
secteur
de
l’eau
sur
le
continent.
Facing a high unemployment rate, the youth are the most
important segment of the African population. As the source of
life, water can also be a source of employment for this youth.
At the roudtable, many students and young professionals
learned about the various jobs in the water sector. Discussions
with experienced professionals have convinced them that
beyond conventional jobs of engineers and technicians, there
are many other opportunities in the sector. To seize these
opportunities, Dr. Lakhdar Boukerrou encouraged them to be
ambitious, to set goals, to persevere in the quest for
experience. Furthermore, he invited the youth to strive for
excellence. So that to provide the innovation needed for the
development of the water sector on the continent.
« Nous nous réjouissons de la qualité des échanges avec nos
aînés évoluant dans le secteur de l’eau. Leurs témoignages et
expériences nous convainquent qu’il y a des opportunités que
nous pouvons saisir pour réussir dans nos futures carrières
professionnelles et contribuer au développement de ce secteur
en Afrique », a affirmé M. Aly Simboro, Président de WAY-WASH.
"We look forward to the quality of the discussions with our
seniors working in the water sector. Their testmonies and
experiences convinced us that there are opportunities we can
seize to succeed in our future careers and contribute to the
development of this sector in Africa, "said Aly Simboro,
President of WAY-WASH.
