His doctoral dissertation ftom 1922, Der Palestrinaund die Dissonanz and his subsequent textbook on counterpoint are llsttl used at many universities and similar institutions all over the world. In Italy Jeppesen discovereda number of unknown works from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, first published under his auspices, including 10 massesby Palestrina which appeared in 1954 under the title Le Messedi Mantoua. From 1946 Knud Jeppesen was professor at the University ofAarhus; before this he had been active as an organist and teacher in Copenhagen' As a composer he is most widely known for his choral music in the tradition of classical vocal polyphony. His music may be seen as a subjective development of Carl Nielsen's style. Among instrumental works, one might mention a Concerto for Horn and Orchestra (.1942), the Little Summer Trio ('Lille Sommertrio') for flute, cello and piano (1957) and a number of organ works. The Little Trio'La Primantera' was composed in Italy in 1944. Carl Nielsen (1865-1931) did not win broad international recognition as a writer of symphonies until the 1950s. He nevertheless experienced many triumphant moments as a composerboth at home and abroad during the course of his own lifetime. One of these was the first performance of his Little Suite for Strings, Op.1, in 1888. Although today we regard Carl Nielsen principally as a composer of music in the major forms (symphonies, concertos, operas and chamber music), he has won unrivalled popularity in his native land for simple and popularly inspired songs such as Jens Vejmand. CarI Nielsen began to play the violin at an early age, and was taught by his father, a popular local fiddler. It was not long before he would go along with his father and play at celebrations in the neighbourhood. When he grew up he worked as a military bandsman and later as a violinist. He was conductor of the Royal Danish Orchestra (1908-14) and of the Music Society (1915-27). He also deputised as conductor in Gothenburg. Canto serioso shows Nielsen at his most lyrical. Johan Kvandal (b. 1919) received his musical training as an organist, conductor and composer at the Oslo Conservatoire. Later he also studied L composition with Joseph Marx in vienna and with Nadia Boulanger in paris. As the son of the composer David Monrad Johansen he came into contact at an early age with such composersas Eivind Groven and Sparre Olsen, and his first pieces show strong influence from the Norwegian folk-music tradition. His later works are composedin a personal neo-classrcalstyle, without however any attempt to concealthe composer'sNorwegian origins. He has written a number of orchestral works, chamber music, church music and vocal works. There rs a concerto for flute and strings (dedicated to Per Oien) from 1963, whilst the Introd, uction and Allegro, Op.30 {1969), dedicated to Ingegti.rd @ien, is very popular among horn-players all over the world. It was first performed on the Norwegian Radio on 17th May 1969. Like Groven, Sparre Olsen (1903-1984)was also strongly influenced by Norwegian folk-music. He nevertheless received a traditional musical training both in his native Norway and in Berlin, Vienna and London, including studies in composition with Percy Grainger and Fartein Valen. His musical idiom is highly personal, combining the mood and melody of folk-music with free harmony and elegantly effective counterpoint. Sparre Olsen's output includes numerous compositions for orchestra, choral works, solo songs and chamber musrc. Several of his songs have become extremely popular and may be regarded as part of the national heritage. (His Serenade for flute and strings is available on BIS-CD-103).Aubade was composedin 1979 and dedicated to Ingegtird and Per Aien. Hugo Alfv6n (1872-1960) won universal acclaim for his Midsommaruaka, better-known internationally as Swedish Rhapsctdy. In Sweden, his song for male choir Sweden'sFlag is regarded as a sort of second national anthem, his Festspel as official Swedish festive music, and his Elegy as the standard funeral prece. With his First Symphony (BIS-CD-395), Alfv6n broke with the dominant Mendelssohn/Gade style at the end of the 19th century, developing through brilliant orchestration a completely personal idiom in the spirit of late romanticism. Alfv6n was trained as a violinist at home and abroad. and plaved with the RoSralorchestra in Stockholm from 1890-97.During the same period he also studied composition rvith Johan Lindgren. In 1910 h" *ut appointed Director Musices at Uppsala University, where he remained until he retired in 1939. He was also very active as a choir leader. As an orchestral conductor he principally performed his own works, including appearancesabroad in Helsinki, Copenhagen,OsIo, Vienna, London, Philadeiphia and Boston. A1fv6n made significant contributions to both orchestral and 'ocil music. In the field of chamber music however, the list of his works is a more modest one. BesidesaViolin Sonata, Op.1, he only composeda Romance (1898). The work was dedicated for violin and this Notturno Elegiaco for horn to the great Swedish horn player Axel Malm (1888-1965). per @ien Since the 1940sNiels Viggo Bentzon (b. Copenhagen,1919) has been regarded as one of Denmark's leading composersand concert pianists. His productivenessis legendary and, by 1974, Sohlman's Dictionary of Music listed 355 opus numbers, to which many other things may be added. So it is 'Niels Viggo certainl5rtrue, as we used to say in Copenhagenin the forties, that a letter received I recently can't sit down for fir'e minutes without composing'. from him rvith a short presentation of the work here, which I quote for the ' and is composedwithin the benefit of listeners: ... The finale is a free assessment of the rondo principle' The first performance was eventuall5' given by the undersigned together with Ingbert Michelsen. In subsequent years the sonata has travelled far and wide. In 1968, when I was composerin residence at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire' I performed the work with Barry Tirckwell.' I mvself discoveredthe sonata one da)' in 1949 in a music shop in Reykjavik, where we hr.ed for several years, and became quite enthusiastic about it. I performed it on Icelandic Radio the same year (playing the horn on this occasion) and am thus possibly one ofthe first peopleto have played the work abroac. 6 Peter Heise (1830-1879)is a Danish composer, known and loved in his native land principally for his songs and romances and for his opera Kins and Marshul, which with its story of a regicide set in the Danish l,liaate ege"shas becomesomething of a national opera in Denmark. It was customarv in tf,e 19th century for all kinds of artists, painters, sculptors, musicians, composers and writers to travel to Italy to study, absorb and develop, and Heise too sDenr severalperiodsthere. In a letter home in December1868he wrote:'... I dare say ville [the composerswife] has also told 1'ou about our horn player Arimenti, wht generally plays excellently without quite being one ofthe mosfgifted exponents, but he is a good-natured fellow who so wants me to composea piece of music for his Corno and I do want to sometime...' This letter is mentioned in Gustav Hetsch's book on peter Heise (1926) and Hetsch continues: 'Heise writes that he would perhaps grant the man,s wish some day, but to my knowledge this never materialised,. During my time as horn player in Denmark 1928-1946) I had no knowledge of the piece, but now it may be found pubtished under the 'old fashioned' company name'. Jens Vejmand.
