Smooth ride for Numonyx IT thanks to TCS` consulting, technical and
Client Experience Smooth ride for Numonyx IT thanks to TCS’ consulting, technical and functional expertise As the demand for non-volatile memory devices continues to grow, memory providers are focusing on leading-edge technology that offer increased storage capacity while simultaneously maintaining high-volume production to remain successful in a competitive marketplace. In early 2008, two global semiconductor giants, Intel and STMicroelectronics, combined their flash memory businesses to form an independent semiconductor company, Numonyx, to benefit from the synergies in their businesses. The success of the new company’s business operations significantly depended on the successful integration of the parents’ IT infrastructure. A well thought out and effectively managed IT integration plan was imperative to ensure alignment of business and IT, lower costs and simplify the IT environment. Having inherited a diverse culture and vast IT infrastructure, Numonyx knew it had a complex and challenging task at hand. Effective structures, processes, program management and controls were essential to mitigate financial and commercial risk. Numonyx engaged TCS, who combined its consulting know-how, best practices and technology expertise, to help create an IT organization for Numonyx and successfully integrate the IT environments of the parent companies. TCS was a key partner in the process of building its IT organization from operations to the office of the CIO. Customer Numonyx Industry High Tech Offering IT Transformation Client Experience About the Client Numonyx invents, develops and delivers a wide range of integrated NOR, NAND, RAM and Phase Change non-volatile memory technologies and products. Its products meet the increasingly sophisticated needs of customers in the cellular, data and embedded markets. Numonyx was formed in April 2008 when two innovators in the flash memory industry—Intel and STMicroelectronics — came together. The company has a global presence with headquarters in Switzerland. Business Situation When two global semiconductor giants joined to combine their flash memory businesses, the new company, Numonyx, had the economies of scale to benefit from the increasing demand for memory. Numonyx inherited some of the assets and resources of its parent companies. However, the parent companies’ infrastructure shared few commonalities, especially with respect to their IT. It was also decided that the business applications at Numonyx would be in line with the STMicroelectronics model, albeit as an independent identity. Clearly, the gamut of activities that required to be performed to set up the IT organization for the new company was huge. Managing multiple stakeholders, transitioning knowledge, aligning the IT landscape to business requirements, ensuring minimal impact on the new company and the parents’ customers, and creating new IT leadership roles were some of the challenges that needed to be addressed quickly. A key requirement was building a robust IT application infrastructure. First, IT processes and architecture needed to be defined and implemented. The complete IT application and infrastructure landscape had to be cloned and deployed from STMicroelectronics - more than 200 unique applications had to be migrated to the new IT landscape across different platforms. Then, the Intel-contributed Flash Memory division had to be integrated with the new IT landscape. In addition, a standing organization for managing and supporting the company’s IT needed to be built. Acknowledging the complexity, the Numonyx management team chose to leverage TCS’ depth and breadth of consulting, functional and technical expertise and experience. TCS’ mandate was to help set up the IT operations at Numonyx. TCS' Solution TCS adopted a robust program management process to efficiently manage the entire application portfolio and skillfully control internal resources for maximum impact. TCS and Numonyx helped define the IT architecture and the IT strategy, and bring in process excellence. In a phased approach, TCS defined, implemented and supported the entire IT organization. The engagement was conducted in three phases: Phase 1: Lay the foundation for Numonyx ICT organization Numonyx cloned and configured the finance, HR, purchasing systems, web services and messaging applications IT Systems to a new data center. This established Numonyx as a legal entity. In this phase, TCS helped define the Enterprise Architecture and carried out knowledge transition activities for the complete STMicroelectronics landscape to be cloned and to provide operations support for applications. Client Experience Phase 2: Clone the STMicroelectronics Enterprise Applications and Systems With the knowledge transition done, TCS began cloning the STMicroelectronics business applications to the Numonyx Data Center. It migrated and re-integrated applications, and implemented mandatory business changes. Then, the applications were configured and tested on Numonyx World Wide Data Center. Nonrelevant data was purged/ scrambled. The Numonyx IT infrastructure went live in December 2008 and began operating its enterprise applications independently of parents. TCS then began providing operations support for the live applications and infrastructure. Phase 3: Migrate Numonyx Data in Intel Systems on Numonyx Landing Zone While the second phase ensured independence from STMicroelectronics, the third phase integrated Intelcontributed factories and merged Numonyx data in Intel systems to Numonyx IT landscape, resulting in independence from Intel. TCS rationalized and optimized the IT infrastructure in line with the defined Enterprise Architecture. It set up the entire IT application infrastructure with more than 200 applications. TCS used several tools and methodologies, and frameworks including: n Proprietary Integrated Methodology for developing Process-oriented Architecture using Component Technology (IMPACT) for defining the Enterprise Architecture n ACE-Tool for SAP technical and business process analysis n Protégé, an ontology tool to collate knowledge and generate relevant reports n COBIT-based Governance Framework for effective resource estimation and easy ramp up n Prince2 methodology for project execution TCS helped to build the Numonyx IT organization, which included the top 27 leadership roles under the CIO (Solution domain and Technical domain) including the office of the CIO. Benefits TCS’ adept program management allowed the new company to make the most of the synergies between the parent companies’ factories, even before the IT systems were cloned and ready. Additionally, TCS set up the IT organization and delivered the following benefits: n Cost savings on IT spend in the first year n Improved visibility and automation due to the new assets created n Independence from parent bringing synergy and reducing hidden costs n 24×7 support for critical business applications with 90% offshore leverage n Provided end-to-end services from knowledge transition, business consulting, technical architecture, infrastructure support and created assets for each of these services n Knowledge repository creation and maintenance n Proactive process improvements to check and validate business reports from applications n Shortened month-end and year-end closing process I'm happy to confirm that Numonyx Enterprise Applications went live. After many months of intensive work and dedication for the preparation of this Go Live, you have shown your capacity to go even further with an incredible energy, to make it happen despite many unexpected obstacles and issues. The team work spirit has allowed us to overcome these obstacles. I want to pass all my recognition and my very warm thanks to all. Let's enjoy this unique moment and be ready for future events.
