discussion of ideas building a winning proposal
e-BOSS: Extending BOSS discussion of ideas building a winning proposal Jean-Paul Kneib (LAM) 1 vendredi 24 juin 2011 e-BOSS ideas • a ~4-year cosmology project that pushes the reach of the • • Sloan Telescope to map the LSS beyond z=0.6: • probe 0.6<z<~1 with Emission-Line-Galaxies (ELG) • probe 1<z<~2 with QSOs • increase the sample of z>2.2 QSOs for Ly-forest survey provide new competitive BAO Dark Energy constraints in the 0.6<z<2 range using ELGs and Quasars as tracers: • double the signal in the Ly-alpha forest compared to BOSS • a factor of ~2+ improvement in DETF-FOM compared to BOSS. provide a wealth of ancillary sciences: • Galaxy & Quasars science • Lensing (photo-z calibration and tracing the structures) • Multi-wavelength science using synergy with other very wide field survey Jean-Paul Kneib - eBOSS - LBL - June, 24th 2011 vendredi 24 juin 2011 2 eBOSS opportunity • A great opportunity to: LSS from z~0.6 to z~3 extending BOSS, providing ‣ map new cosmological constraints at z>0.6 use of the powerful BOSS spectrograph (working ‣ make spectrograph with the largest multiplexing - just need adequate targets density!) Sloan Telescope very productive & maintain legacy ‣ keep in cosmological surveys from SDSS/BOSS community us ready for future survey: BigBOSS/EUCLID/ ‣ Get WFIRST ... Jean-Paul Kneib - eBOSS - LBL - June, 24th 2011 vendredi 24 juin 2011 3 e-BOSS LSS mapping QSOs ELGs BOSS vendredi 24 juin 2011 Jean-Paul Kneib - eBOSS - LBL - June, 24th 2011 from Anze Slozar Examples of BOSS spectra for ELGs and QSOs ELGs and QSOs have strong emission lines that make the redshift identification very efficient, down to the photometry limit of DR8. z= 1.79477 SiIV CIV CIII] z= 2.00803 CII] MgII Ly! (BigBOSS, PFS, any space mission) Jean-Paul Kneib - eBOSS - LBL - June, 24th 2011 vendredi 24 juin 2011 7 e-BOSS targets • Case [A] (~10k sq.deg/150 targets/sqdeg) DR8 photometry is enough(g<22.5) no real need for other photometric data • Case [B] (~5k sq.deg/300 targets/sqdeg) => 2 visit per position (probe ~300 target/sqdeg), DR8 should be just OK, deeper data would help! • Case [C] 3.3k => ~3(4) visit per position (probe ~450 target/ sqdeg), DR8 is not enough, need deeper data: DES, HSC,VST/ KIDS - could also benefit from u-band survey: SGCUSS, WIRO?, CFHT? HSC? Jean-Paul Kneib - eBOSS - LBL - June, 24th 2011 vendredi 24 juin 2011 8 e-BOSS targets • • • • ELGs: see Johan’s talk for different selections ugr vs. gri • AGN from follow-up of eROSITA/Herschel(?) ~10 agn/sqdeg (first year of eROSITA data) QSOs: see Christophe’s talk z~0.8 LRGs from WISE ?? (to be explored) Clusters BCGs/LRGs from follow-up of X-ray/SZ experiments: ~a few gal/sqdeg Jean-Paul Kneib - eBOSS - LBL - June, 24th 2011 vendredi 24 juin 2011 9 e-BOSS imaging data • • DR8: 10k sqdeg • VST/KIDS: 750 sq.deg on the Equator NGC (should be publicly accessible on some form by mid-2014) - no repeat strategy • HSC: 2000 sq.deg on the equator ~1500 sq.deg on NGC, ~500 sqdeg on SGC? (access?) • • SGCUSS: 3000 sqdeg on SGC to U<23 (access?) • WIRO proposal accepted (Adam Myers) u~23 on a few k sq.degs looks possible DES: current design ~500 sqdeg overlap, could be increase to 1500 sq.deg on South Galactic cap. We can apply for DECam imaging on NGC - yearly repeat observation strategy CFHT u-band: 10 sqdeg/hour with u<~24 - plan for a LP, next call end of 2011 => ~400h, 4000 sqdeg on NGC?
