In solchen Fällen erlischt jeder Garantieanspruch! Description du fonctionnement 13. Dear Customer, The following safety instructions are intended not only for the protection of your health but also for the protection of the device. Please read through the following points attentively: For safety and licensing (CE) reasons, unauthorized conversion and/or modifications to the product are not permitted. The ATX power unit is constructed in compliance with protection class 1. The only voltage source that may be used is a properly designed mains socket-outlet with the protective earth conductor of the public supply system. The power unit has an automatic broad-range input for the input voltage (100240V~/50-60Hz). Therefore, the error-prone adjustment of the existing mains voltage is avoided. The product is approved for operation in dry, closed rooms only. The product may not become damp or wet. Do not place vessels such as glasses, vases etc. on or alongside the device. Liquids could seep into the interior of the housing and in doing so impair the electrical safety. Apart from that there is the greatest risk of a fire or a fatal electric shock! In such a case, switch off the mains socket to which the product is connected (e.g. switch off the automatic fuse) and pull the mains plug out of the mains socket and the PC ATX power unit. Then, the PC ATX power unit must not be operated any longer. Take it to a specialist workshop. If the product (or the computer in which the power unit is installed) is taken from a cold environment to a warm one, it is possible that condensation water develops. Allow the power unit (and the computer in which the power unit is installed) reach room temperature, before connecting it to the mains voltage and switching it on. This may take several hours. If this instruction is not observed, not only the power unit or computer could be destroyed, but there is also the risk of a fatal electric shock! The power unit, computer, mains cable and mains plug may not be handled with damp or wet hands. Otherwise there is the risk of a fatal electric shock! Never disconnect the power plug from the mains socket by the cable. Always pull out the power plug by holding it at the handling surfaces provided for this purpose. 24 14. Tips & Information • As already mentioned, the power unit remains in the stand-by mode after being switched off via the power button of your ATX housing. Therefore, it is not disconnected from the mains voltage! It operates in the same way, for example, as a television set which can be switched to the stand-by mode by using the remote control. The ATX power unit continues to consume current in this stand-by mode. To save energy, you should switch off the ATX power unit via the mains switch if you do not need to use the computer any longer. • Of course, the same instruction is to be followed for all the other devices which are connected to the computer, e.g. monitor, scanner, loudspeakers etc. Devices without "genuine" mains switches (e.g. many PC loudspeakers, some monitors or also all devices with plug-in power units) can be disconnected from the mains voltage by using a multiple socket outlet with an on/off switch. ☞ The standby power consumption of a complete PC system can easily reach 50W. That is one kilowatt hour just after one day (1 kWh) "consumed" senselessly and converted into heat. The purchase of a multiple socket outlet with an on/off switch can therefore pay for itself within one year. ☞ Switching on all consumers (PC, monitor, printer etc.) together can possibly trigger the automatic fuse of the associated power circuit, because the switchon current is too high. If this occurs, first switch on the switch of the multiple socket outlet and then the individual devices subsequently. Proceed in the reverse order when switching them off; first switch off the devices and then the multiple socket outlet. There are also provided so-called "power managers" which allow the individual sockets to be switched on and off more conveniently via switches positioned on the front. Such "power managers" can be placed, for example, below the monitor. ☞ Ink-jet printers have to be switched off first via the on/off switch of the printer before the mains voltage will be switched off, for example, via the multiple socket outlet. Otherwise, the printer cannot take the print head to a stationary position meaning that the jets of the print head could dry out! Some printers should always remain connected to the mains voltage as otherwise they will carry out an additional cleaning process when the mains voltage is applied again (i.e. when they are switched on via the multiple socket outlet). The costs for this senseless use of ink exceed the savings in power. 37 d) 4-pin ATX2.0-12V plug e) 2-pin connection for the speed control unit Do not touch the mains cable, if it shows any signs of damage. First of all switch off the mains socket to which the product is connected (e.g. switch off the automatic fuse) and then pull the mains plug carefully out of the mains socket. Then replace the mains cable by a new one with the same technical details. It is not permitted to repair the damaged mains cable! The device is not a toy and has no place in the hands of children. Children cannot estimate the risks which can arise by the incorrect handling of electrical appliances. Be particularly careful when children are present. They may try to put objects into the device. There is risk of a fatal electric shock! Do not leave packaging material lying around carelessly. In the hands of children, plastic foil and/or bags and polystyrene parts etc. can turn into dangerous toys. In commercial institutions, the accident prevention regulations of the Employer’s Liability Insurance Associations for Electrical Systems and Operating Materials are to be observed. f) 3-pin plug, to the display In schools, training centres, hobby and self-help workshops, the use of the product must be supervised by trained personnel in a responsible manner. g) 3-pin plug, speed output to the motherboard 36 25 5. Functional Description 13. Connector Pin Assignment The power unit has an automatic broad-range input. That means that the mains input voltage can be within the range of between 100 and 240V~ (mains frequency 50-60Hz). a) ATX plug The PC ATX power unit converts this mains voltage into the internal direct voltages required by the PC (+5V, +12V, -5V, -12V and also +3.3V). ☞ The colours of the individual wires (e.g. PS ON and Power OK) may be different. An integrated fan conducts any excess heat generated during this conversion out of the computer. The PC ATX power unit can be switched on and off by using the mains power switch. However, the computer does not start up immediately when the mains switch is switched on. Both the power unit and the connected motherboard are initially in the "stand-by" mode. To start up the computer, the power button on the front of the ATX housing must be pressed briefly. The button must be connected by a cable to the appropriate port on the motherboard of the PC (e.g. ATX power port or similar, please refer to the motherboard instructions). If the computer is switched off by the power button, the stand-by voltage is still applied at your motherboard. This voltage is required for example for switching on the PC via the keyboard or the mouse (if the BIOS of your PC provides this option) or for automatically switching on/powering up for a modem/ISDN calling/network access (depending on the BIOS and software). Therefore, if you wish to work inside the computer (e.g. to install a new plug-in card), always switch off the PC ATX power unit via the mains power switch on the PC ATX power unit first, then disconnect it from the mains voltage and pull out the mains plug. Otherwise the motherboard and also other components can be damaged! b) 5.25"-plug The power unit is provided with a speed output of the internal fans. Moreover, the output power is indicated on a display which is installed in the 5.25" screen. However, this display has certain limits. Thus, the display is only given in steps of 5W and the value shown is only an approximate one calculated by the internal electronic system. c) 3.5"-plug 26 35 12. Technical Data 6. Control Elements and Connections • Operation with the mains voltage, 100-240V~, 50-60Hz (broad-range input) A • Output voltages and output currents (refer to the data given on the power supply unit): +3.3V= +5V= +12V= -5V= -12V= +5V= (stand-by) 30A max. 40A max. 18A max. 0.3A max. 0.8A max. 2A max. B • Voltage connections (the number of 5.25" and 3.5" current plugs may be different for later versions of the power unit): - I O 9 * 5.25" power plug 2 * 3.5" current plug 1 * ATX plug (for the motherboard) 1 * 4-pin ATX2.0 12-V plug (for motherboard with corresponding connection) 2 * S-ATA current plug (e.g. for S-ATA hard disks) C Please note: With new versions of the power unit, the arrangement of the operating elements and connections could have been altered. D A Fan • Three-pin plug for speed output, plug onto the appropriate connection of the motherboard (for controlling the speed of the fan) • Two-pin connection for the speed control unit • Cable with small three-pin plug to be connected to the LC display on the 5.25'' screen (the display shows the power currently supplied by the power unit) • Mains power switch on rear of the device • Active PFC (power factor correction) The fan draws the air out of the PC housing and blows it out of the power unit through the round opening. Therefore, never cover up the air slots of the power unit. Through heat accumulation, the power unit and any connected components will be destroyed! B Mains supply socket The power unit is powered via this socket. C Mains switch The power unit is switched on or off via the mains power switch. ☞ Please observe point 5 of these operating instructions for this step! D Screw holes The four screw holes in the outside corners of the power unit are provided for fastening the power unit inside the PC housing. Use as as many screws as possible with your PC housing. Otherwise, the PC housing could be destroyed due to the heavy weight of the power unit (e.g. during transport). 34 27 7. Installation 11. Troubleshooting If you have no specialist knowledge of installation procedures, please arrange that the installation will be carried out by a SPECIALIST or an appropriate specialist workshop. By purchasing the ATX power unit you have acquired a product which has been designed to the state of the art and operates reliably. Nevertheless, problems and faults can occur. Therefore, we would like to explain to you how you can eliminate possible faults. Incorrect installation will damage the power supply unit, your computer and all connected devices. It may also cause other risks, such as short circuit, electric shock or fire. Caution, danger to life! Switch off the computer in which the power supply unit is to be installed and all connected devices. Isolate all devices from the mains voltage and pull out the mains power plug! It is not sufficient just to switch it off via the mains switch! Observe all the safety instructions contained in these operating instructions without fail! Problem Possible solutions Device not functioning Is the ATX power unit switched on? • Open the housing of your computer and remove the cover carefully. Is the mains power cable plugged in correctly on both sides? • If the power unit is to be used to replace a defective power unit, for example, remove the old defective power unit first. First of all, disconnect all connecting plugs for the motherboard and the installed devices. Then remove the cable ties which may be there. Is the mains power socket-outlet working properly? Are all the connections of the components inside the computer correct? If, for example, the hard disk cable is twisted when plugged in, the computer may not start due to a short circuit and the ATX power unit will not start either! • Hold the old power unit tightly and remove all retaining screws of the power unit so that it can be taken out of the PC housing. If a new PC has been assembled, the motherboard will often not start if the rotational speed of the CPU fan is too slow (e.g. CPU fan with a low rotational speed to reduce the noise). • Screw down the new power unit in the PC housing with 4 screws (thread basing on inchsystem, max. screw length ca. 5mm). • Connect the motherboard by using the broad ATX plug. ☞ Note! If force is exerted, it is also possible to install the ATX plug in the wrong way into the socket of the motherboard! The ATX plug should be easily plugged in without applying any force, then it is to be locked in place by using the clip at the side. Computer does not start up when the power supply unit is switched on If the ATX power unit is switched on (via the mains power switch on the rear of the ATX power unit) there is only the standby voltage applied at the motherboard. It is required to press the power button on the front of your PC housing briefly to turn on the ATX power unit (providing that the power button is connected to the appropriate connection of your motherboard). Therefore, check that the connection of the power button to the motherboard is correct. The scope of delivery includes an ATX adapter to be able to use the power unit for special motherboards provided with a 24-pin ATX socket. If you have such a motherboard (e.g. a server motherboard), first plug the adapter into the 24pin plug of the motherboard and then the 20-pin plug of the power unit into the socket of the adapter. • The ATX power unit also has a 4-pin ATX2.0 12-V plug which is required for many motherboards (e.g. motherboards for Intel P4 or AMD64 processors). It is used to connect the +12V extra voltage to the motherboard via extra wires (it is used to relieve the load of the +12V wire of the ATX current plug). ☞ 28 If your motherboard has this connection, do not fail to connect this plug. 33 9. Maintenance and Cleaning None of the components inside the ATX power unit is to be serviced by the user. Therefore never open it. Servicing or repair works and any associated opening of the ATX power unit may only be carried out by a specialist or a specialist workshop. The fuse integrated in the ATX power unit can only be replaced by using a special tool. Therefore, do not try to replace the fuse by yourself. Entrust a specialist or a specialist workshop to do this work. Depending on the installation place of the computer, more or less dust is sucked in by the fan which is installed in the ATX power unit. This dust will deposit in the power unit or on the blades of the fan. It can be removed from the outside by using a vacuum cleaner. Disconnect the ATX power unit previously from the mains voltage. Pull out the mains plug! A clean, dry and soft cloth is sufficient to clean the outside of the ATX power unit. 10. Disposal Once the product becomes unusable, dispose of it in accordance with the relevant statutory regulations. • The supplied 80mm fan can be mounted to an 80mm fan slot on the rear of the PC housing. It conducts warm air out of the PC housing. Connect the three-pin plug with the single cable to the appropriate connection on the motherboard; it carries the speed impulse of the fan. One of the two-speed control units of the 5.25'' screen is connected to the two-pin plug. • Connect the cable with the small three-pin plug of the power unit to the appropriate socket behind the display of the 5.25'' screen. It supplies the power or the display data to the display on the front side of the 5.25'' screen. • The supplied 5.25'' screen with the two speed control units is to be installed into a free 5.25" slot of the PC housing. Then, connect the two two-pin plugs of the speed control units to the appropriate connection of the power unit or of the 80mm fan. Afterwards, the speed of the rear power unit fan can be set by one of the control units and the speed of the 80mm fan can be set by the other one. ☞ If the power unit becomes too hot, it automatically increases the speed of the power unit fan. • Furthermore, the power unit offers a speed output (three-pin plug). It can be connected to a suitable connection e.g. on the motherboard to be able to monitor the speed of the fan. • Connect all devices included in the PC housing to the appropriate current plugs, e.g. hard disk, DVDROM etc. The power unit also has two S-ATA current plugs. • Install all cables in the PC neatly in straight lines ensuring that the cables are not squeezed or damaged in any way. Protect the cables from the sharp edges within the PC housing. Make sure that they do not become entangled in the fan of the PC. • Use cable ties to fix the cables in the PC housing. • Check the following points: Is the power button on the front of your ATX housing connected to the appropriate port on the motherboard? ☞ That is to say because the switching-on of the mains power switch does not switch on the PC (you may change this via the BIOS setting). • Close the computer housing and re-connect the computer to all other devices, cables and accessories. • Now, connect the computer to the mains voltage and switch on the ATX power unit via the mains switch on the rear of the ATX power unit. ☞ Normally, the computer will not start up immediately. You have to press the power button on the front of the ATX housing briefly to switch on the PC. • If your computer does not start correctly, switch it off immediately and check all settings and cable connections. 32 Before you open the housing to check, do not forget to switch off all devices. Isolate them from the mains voltage and pull out the mains power plug (see above)! 29 8. Handling Observe all safety instructions in these operating instructions! You may only operate the product in dry indoor areas. Contact with moisture must be avoided at all times! Never touch the device or the plug with wet or moist hands! There is risk of a fatal electric shock! Avoid the following unfavourable ambient conditions at the installation location or during transportation: • damp or humidity which is too high • extreme cold or heat • direct sunlight • dust or combustible gases, vapours or solvents • strong vibrations • strong magnetic fields such as those found in the vicinity of machinery or loudspeakers. Ensure that the computer/power unit is ventilated adequately at the place of set-up. The computer has to be set up/positioned in such a manner that an adequate air circulation is possible. Never cover up the air slots or the computer when it is in operation. Do not insert any object, e.g. paper clip, ballpoint pen, pin, needle or knitting needle etc. into the ventilation slots or openings of the devices. Children could attempt to put objects (e.g. toys) into the ventilation slots and openings of the ATX power unit or the computer. It must be assumed that the safe operation is no longer possible, if - the device shows signs of visible damage, - the device does not operate any longer and - it has been stored for long periods under unfavourable conditions or - it has been subject to considerable stress in transit. Do not pull the mains plug out of the mains socket by the cable! Always pull the plug out of the power socket by the handling surfaces provided on the side. Otherwise the mains cable could be damaged. There is risk of an electric shock! The ATX power unit may not be opened. None of the components inside the ATX power unit is to be maintained by the user. If the ATX power unit (or the computer, in which it is installed) is not used for a longer period of time (e.g. during storage), switch it off via the mains switch and additionally pull the mains plug of the mains cable out of the mains socket. If you switch off the computer only via the power button on the front of the PC housing, the computer or the power unit is in standby mode (similar to a TV set). Therefore, the PC must be disconnected from the mains voltage before carrying out work at the PC (e.g. installation of a plug-in card). Switch off the ATX power unit via the mains power switch and disconnect it from the mains voltage. Pull out the mains plug. The ATX power unit consumes power (though in low quantities) in the standby mode, too. That's why, slight heating is normal. In the standby mode, some kWh (kilowatt hours) can be accumulated per month. Depending on the price for electricity, costs of 1-2 Euro per month are possible and can easily be saved: Simply switch off the ATX power unit via the mains power switch. This could cause damage to the ATX power unit and the computer, in which it is installed. Apart from this, there is the risk of a fatal electric shock, if electric cables or terminals are contacted.! If the power unit (or the computer in which the power unit is installed) is taken from a cold environment to a warm one, it is possible that condensation water develops. Allow the power unit (and the computer in which the power unit is installed) reach room temperature before connecting it to the mains voltage and switching it on. This may take several hours. If this instruction is not observed, not only the power unit or computer could be destroyed, but there is also the risk of a fatal electric shock! When setting up the product, make sure that none of the cables is bent or squeezed. Always check the ATX power unit (and the computer) for damage each time before using it. If damage is found, the ATX power unit or computer may NOT be connected to the mains voltage! This may cause fatal injury! 30 31
