The b e r y l l i u m c o n t e n t of t h e r o c k was discovered 3y t h e B r i t i s h Columbia Dept. of Mines a s a r e s u l t of a r o u t i n e s p e c t r o g r a p h i c a n a l y s i s of a specimen submitted by M r . Davis f o r s t i n assay. Three c l a i m s , Low Grade Nos. 2, 3, & 4, were l o c a t e d i n June 1954 by J.J. McDougall f o r S t . Eugene Mining Corporation, Limited. Some g e o l o g i c a l work was r e p o r t e d on t h e claims. Spectrographic a n a l y s i s gave a range of .01-.l% t i n . "A l e n t i c u l a r body of b l a c k s k a r n about 300 f e e t long and 35 f e e t i n maximum width l i e s w i t h i n a t h i n l e n s of impure c r y s t a l l i n e limestone. It extends southeastward from t h e c o n t a c t of t h e l a t t e r w i t h g r a n i t e i n a c r e e k g u l l y , becoming narrower and p a s s i n g beneath overburden. A s m a l l g r a n i t e tongue l i e s above t h e s k a r n and p a r a l l e l w i t h i t . A limestone l e n s i s o v e r l a i n c h i e f l y by a r g i l l i t e and u n d e r l a i n c h i e f l y by blue-gray q u a r t z i t e s c o n t a i n i n g numerous q u a r t z v e i n s , a l l a p p a r e n t l y dipping s t e e p l y t o t h e n o r t h e a s t . Some p a t c h e s of r e d and yellow gossan occur a l o n g t h e a r g i l l i t e s , which a r e much c o n t o r t e d and f a u l t e d . There i s however, no evidence of a major f a u l t along t h e c r e e k bottom, which marks t h e c o n t a c t . he s k a r n i s mostly b l a c k b u t i n p a r t banded. The massive b l a c k m a t e r i a l i s heavy and s t r o n g l y magnetic, and i s a p p a r e n t l y composed l a r g e l y of magnetite, w i t h minor amounts of c h l o r i t e , g a r n e t , and, l o c a l l y , s m a l l i r r e g u l a r a r e a s of f l u o r i t e and q u a r t z . I t i s r e d t o r e d d i s h brown and similar t o g a r n e t i n appearance; i t occurs as i n d i v i d u a l g r a i n s g e n e r a l l y less t h a n a mm and c l u s t e r s o r s t r i n g e r s o c c a s i o n a l l y 20 mm long. "According t o Holland, ' c l u s t e r s of g r a i n s a r e a s much a s $ inch across, i t i s accompanied by a few small g r a i n s of n a t i v e bismuth, i t a p p e a r s t o b e l o c a l i z e d i n a massive magnetite-rich c o r e i n t h e c e n t r e of t h e w i d e s t p a r t of t h e s k a r n l e n s a t i t s northwest and a v i s u a l examination of t h e s k a r n i n d i c a t e s t h a t t h e b e r y l l i u m c o n t e n t i s low, c o n s i d e r a b l y less t h a n 1 p e r c e n t ' . Composite samples of m a t e r i a l c o l l e c t e d by t h e w r i t e r , b u t n o t i n c l u d i n g p i e c e s c o n t a i n i n g v i s i b l e h e l v i t e , were r e p o r t e d from s p e c t r o g r a p h i c a n a l y s i s t o c o n t a i n .02 and .015 per c e n t Be. A specimen of t h e carbonate-rich phase c o n t a b e d 0.D04 p e r c e n t . Samples of s l i g h t l y m i n e r a l i z e d h o r n f e l s from t h r e e l o c a l i t i e s above t h e s k a r n showed Be i n a c o n c e n t r a t i o n of l e s s t h a n 0.01 p e r c e n t . Three o t h e r s showed none. A sample of t h e g r a n i t e i n t h e v i c i n i t y showed no Be." (Mulligan, R., 1968). ... ... ...
