VISITE GUIDÉE GUIDED TOUR
VISITE D’ATELIER PARTIE L’ÉPÉE TITRE XOXOX SPIDER IN SPACE VISITE GUIDÉE GUIDED TOUR L’ÉPÉE EST LA DERNIÈRE MANUFACTURE SWISS MADE DE PENDULES DE TABLE. LE CRÉATEUR HORLOGER MB&F LUI A CONFIÉ DEUX RÉALISATIONS DÉLIRANTES, INSPIRÉES DES VAISSEAUX DE STAR WARS ET D’ARAIGNÉES GÉANTES. VISITE INDISCRÈTE D’UNE VIEILLE MAISON PROPULSÉE DANS L’ESPACE MODE. L’ÉPÉE IS THE LAST WATCH MAKER IN SWITZERLAND DEDICATED TO MAKING HIGH-END CLOCKS. THE ARTISTIC HOROLOGIST MB&F ENTRUSTED THEM TO PRODUCE TWO DELIRIOUS CREATIONS, INSPIRED FROM STAR WARS SPACE SHIPS AND GIGANTIC SPIDERS. AN INTRUSIVE VISIT INSIDE AN OLD HORLOGER THAT HAS BEEN PROPELLED INTO TRENDY MODE. Tired of Swiss watches ? Not enough space for a grandfather clock ? Your remaining option : a table clock ! Against all odds, the sector is in the middle of a revolution thanks to L’Épée, the last Swiss manufacture to concentrate its work uniquely to clocks. While its name is fairly unknown to the public, its clocks have been sent around the world, under the name of one brand or another. Suiza, L’Épée’s parent company, is the last of the leading Swiss watch manufacturers to concentrate on office clocks. Nearly the whole industry calls upon their services when it comes to making these clocks which once orned our parents offices. As discretion is necessary, the house conceals the names of those prestigious clients that buy the right to put their name on the finished time piece, white-labelled by Suiza or its subsidiary L’Épée. All, expect one : MB&F. The brand is that of another generation, one of the haute horlogerie start ups who have rewritten the industry’s codes. In as little as tens years, Max Büsser & Friends is a Genevan collaboration that has chosen to put forward to an equal extent its founder and his friends. 70 DOUX MAGAZINE © D.R. Amongst these, we count, L’Épée. When this man approached the clock manufacturer, the industry held its breath. Max Büsser has shattered the codes of the watchmaking industry and contributed to the conception of the most beautiful pieces of a new horlogical era. L’Épée is at the opposite extreme : a very traditional watch maker, both a captive of its past as a time keeper and of its unique world heritage. Its not a surprise, that its this second part of this human experience that MB&F have chosen to enhance…in its own way. A CLOCK WITH A NIP The result, a spider like table clock. Sensitive souls should abstain, the time piece isn’t really designed to be hidden behind the telephone or the calendar. This gigantic spider stretches out in length as if to grab the hand of the person who would attempt to read the time on its back. L’Épée designed the time module, building on one of its own modules fitted with a power reserve of eight days. For MB&F, the manufacturer deployed a sapphire glass dome inside which turn the hours and minutes. We find this module on another conjoint creation GARDIENNE D’UN HÉRITAGE UNIQUE AU MONDE PARI RISQUÉ, PARI GAGNÉ L’association entre L’Épée et MB&F était risquée. A VERY TRADITIONAL WATCH MAKER between the two brands, the Starfleet Machine. It’s name reflects Max Büsser’s universe, very oriented around Star Wars and animated heros of the 70’s. The Starfleet is no exception, with an aero-horological design like something straight out of a saga signed Georges Lucas. The piece is composed of three arches, the time module is positioned at the centre of these in the same way as used for the Arachnophobia model : a glass dome where the hours and minutes are read from above, from a vertical angle. There subsists however a sizeable difference between the two : the power reserve here is five time greater than that of Arachnophobia, with an exceptional total of forty days. Its, for the moment the highest level ever reached in this field. RISKY BET, WINNING BET Les ateliers de concpetion, réalisation, montage, réglage et contrôle de L’épée à Delémont (Suisse). 72 DOUX MAGAZINE The association between L’Épée and MB&F was a risk. The clock brand, renowned for its eclecticism, adventures here into unknown grounds, taking risks that nobody has dared for decades. The table clock seemed to have been classed among old antiques. So more than marketing clout, Max Büsser real genius was to bring back life and new orders to the industry and to put the spot light back on L’Épée that seemed set to sink. The operation has been of undeniable success. From survivor in the shadows, L’Épée has become in less than a year the idealised favorite of trendy collecters. Vintage is sought after, especially when it has been revised by MB&F. A FUTURE TO STRENGTHEN One question remains, what will happen if MB&F ceases to bring to life these limited series co-produced with L’Épée ? Will it survive without the brand that has propelled it into a new era ? Has this sudden come back to fame not gone too far, too fast, can it last ? To see the headquarters of L’Épée, in Delémont in the Jura, this doesn’t seem to be a problem. The production of the Starfleet Machines has finished, the work tables are currently covered with spiders legs in all directions. The brand’s manager confirms that the partnership with MB&F is only beginning. New pieces are in the pipeline. A visit through the work shops shows proof of this, wth bits of space ships and robots. A large part of which will be uncovered in January, during the International High Jewellery Fair. Max Büsser is very consistent in his ideas, as far as his childhood heros wanting to discover the galaxy are concerned. If there is a « friend » to make the journey with, that friend will be L’Épée.
