Created in 1969 by André Taquin, the company is specialised in the manufacturing of metal displays and tailor made POS (point of sale). There was a buyout in 2002 by Dominique Rolland, who brought a new, dynamic breath of fresh air to the company. I knew that it would be possible to develop the sales side by relying on the technical and creative areas, he explained. One year later, a designer, Tristan Slegers, was hired to bring creative added value to the displays which were too basic and had been lacking until that point. Very quickly however, it became apparent that the product was developed to its optimal potential on a manufacturing level, but not on a design level. The idea of creating an entirely separate design division came following this conclusion, in 2006, which is when a second designer, Timothy Doig, was integrated into the structure. The meeting of a partner, Pure Solution, a company focused on POS material made from cardboard, would be the real catalyst for change. This is how Taquin came to create Pure Lab in 2008, an independent design studio which proposed concrete solutions allying innovative design and quality of production for furniture and supports for metallic promotions. The Pure Lab studio works mainly for Taquin, but its objective is also to offer its services in other domains (events, urban furniture, conversions…). The creative input has already made the difference on several projects and allowed the company to reach a more upmarket clientele, who are more aesthetically demanding. If certain creative projects are still managed internally by Taquin, who has held onto the services of a designer and two draughtsmen, the important projects are confided to Pure Lab. Faced with international competition, from 2008, Taquin had to relocate a part of its production to Eastern Europe and Asia. Until now design was a lever allowing us to make the difference when comparing us with competitors coming from countries where labour is cheaper, emphasises Dominique Rolland. Today, thanks also to support through a consultancy grant approved by the Walloon Region, the turnover of the company has increased from 1,3 million euros in 2002 to 4 million in 2007. J.B.
