The Birth of Céline We do not know under what name Journey to the End of the Night was sent to a number of publishers on 14 April 1932 with the explanation that it provided « bread for a whole century of literature ». Denoël will claim to have received an anonymous package. The letter addressed to Gallimard is signed « Dr Louis Destouches ». On the 11 October, in his journal, Carolo Rim notes that Destouches explained, « Céline is my mother’s name. Eve- rything that is refined in this work I get from my mother ». He does not mention his maternal grandmother, Céline Guillou, who nonetheless will become « Grandmother Caroline » in Death on the Installment Plan. The book is finally printed on October 13 with the author’s name of Louis- Ferdinand Céline. This of course unites three first names : his own, that of his Father, and that of his Mother. A united family. © Tous droits réservés.
