During the last decades, microtechnologies have prompted the development of miniaturized and highly parallel devices allowing a high biological analysis throughput. For this purpose, we have developed an electrochemically-based approach allowing the patterning and the grafting of a large panel of biological molecules on surfaces. Biomolecules can be arrayed with a patterning scale ranging from 100nm to the millimeter on 2D surfaces1 or into submicronic solid state pores2. Using the possibility to graft biomolecules on metal, this copolymerization process has also opened the development of SPRimaging (Surface Plasmon resonance) allowing the real time and label free measurement of biological interactions on a microarray. Applications of SPRi cover different fields from fundamental researches about oligosaccharides/proteins interactions3 or DNA hybridization studies to clinical researches. These results also prompted the development of new analytical processes to explore, or to fit in for the need of new biological applications focused in the field of the interactions of complex objects as bacteria or cells and surfaces. In this way, processes to catch see and sort immune blood cells have been developed opening the way of very specific immunological studies4-5. In a more applied field, the real time monitoring of bacteria growth ie “culture, capture, measure” process, has allowed the detection of very low number of bacteria6. This low-tech, fluidic free approach is fully compatible with single bacteria detection in complex samples as food or blood. Beyond the classical process of specific recognition, new approach of optical e-tongue/nose using an assembly of non-specific combinatorial sensors are currently developed7. This process allows the translation of an odor into an image…opening a large field of applications. I will also try during this seminar to connect basic researches to applications and valorizations.
