SUR 3 ANS :
TRAVAIL
Avec son orchestre Opera Fuoco, consacré à l'opéra sur instruments d'époque,
David Stern souhaite créer une troupe de jeunes chanteurs lyriques, unique en
France, selon un modèle original, qui renouvelle la notion de troupe et celle
d'atelier lyrique.
Il s'agit d'accompagner dans leur développement les meilleurs jeunes
talents sur 2 à 3 ans, selon un parcours personnalisé défini pour chacun en
fonction de sa voix, de sa personnalité et de son potentiel.
L'idée est d'offrir à des jeunes chanteurs des opportunités
d'expériences professionnelles au sein d'une compagnie
d'artistes expérimentés et attentifs à leur développement,

afin qu'ils puissent épanouir leur propre personnalité
artistique. Ce compagnonnage et l'accompagnement sur la

En particulier l'accent sera mis sur la créativité de chaque individu et la

rapport entre l'écoute et l'expression sera fondamental dans cet accompagnement,
ainsi que la réflexion sur texte et musique, restant en cela fidèle à la démarche
interprétative d'Opera Fuoco.

Cette troupe concerne les jeunes chanteurs maîtrisant les
bases de leur art et désireux de faire leurs premiers pas sur
scène dans des conditions professionnelles.
Un brassage France / Etats-Unis sera encouragé : le
mélange de chanteurs français (ou résidents en France) et
américains permettra à chacun de bénéficier des atouts de
la préparation spécifique à chaque pays.
Les candidats de moins de 28 ans seront privilégiés.
Cet appel à candidatures concerne la 2e promotion intégrée dans la troupe de
2008-09 à 2010-11: la sélection un an en avance laissera à Opera Fuoco le temps
de définir le programme de leur parcours en fonction de chaque voix.
La première promotion de chanteurs est constituée de 4 chanteurs venus du projet
La Finta Giardiniera. Chaque année, les différentes promotions de chanteurs de la
troupe cohabiteront, ce qui portera le nombre à un total de 12 chanteurs par an.

Le travail de la troupe-atelier portera sur le répertoire lyrique (opéras, cantates,
oratorios, Lieder orchestrés) du baroque au romantisme (Verdi).
Les sessions successives seront de différents types :
➢ répétitions d'opéras mis en scène avec orchestre puis tournée du spectacle
➢ répétitions de programmes de concert avec orchestre puis concerts
➢ étude d'un nouveau répertoire au pianoforte
➢ participation à des actions de sensibilisation, ateliers pédagogiques, etc...

Les tournées permettront la mise à l'épreuve devant un public des programmes
préparés et mèneront les jeunes artistes en Ile-de-France, en France et en Europe,
dans des salles de concerts, des théâtres, des festivals.

With Opera Fuoco, period-instrument orchestra devoted to lyric repertoire,
David Stern is creating a troupe of young singers, unique in France, according
to an original model redefining the concept of both troupe and lyric workshop.
The idea of this troupe-workshop is to develop excellent young talents over
a period of 3 years, through a well defined course for each singer according
to their voice, personality and potential.
Chaque chanteur se verra proposer 3 projets par an,
pendant 2 à 3 ans selon le temps de maturation
nécessaire : ce sont au final 6 à 9 projets réalisés avec
chacun pendant sa participation à la troupe, ce qui lui
permet d'acquérir du répertoire, des expériences
professionnelles, et surtout une exigence et une
démarche de travail qui le rendent autonome et prêt à
exprimer ses propres talent et personnalité sur scène.
SESSIONS
& TOURS
Les membres de la troupe seront rémunérés au projet sous
le régime de l'intermittence, selon une grille de tarif
prédéfinie. L'hébergement en chambre ou appartement
sera proposé aux non-franciliens.
David Stern et Jay Bernfeld seront les premiers impliqués
dans cette troupe-atelier, avec les instrumentistes et les
choristes d'Opera Fuoco, les musicologues Damien Colas
et Alessandro di Profio, des chanteurs internationaux
compagnons de route d'Opera Fuoco.
Des metteurs en scène comme Yoshi Oïda, des
chorégraphes, des vidéastes seront associés au travail,
pour compléter l'expérience scénique.
Each singer will participate in three sessions per year,
over the course of 2 or 3 years depending of the singer's
needs :
each singer will have taken part in 6 or 9 projects,
enabling him or her to experience professional life, to
learn a varied repertoire, and, mostly, to acquire an
artistic understanding and to prepare for a professional
career.
The work of the troupe will focus on lyric repertoire (operas, cantatas, oratorios,
orchestrated lieder) from the 17th to the 19th centuries.

The project offers young singers professional opportunities
while working with experienced artists attentive to their
development, so that they can broaden their own artistic
potential. The accompaniment through working periods
will aid them to mature artistically.
PERSONALITY
The creativity of each individual will be underlined through the choice of repertoire
selected for their particular needs. The approach of Opera Fuoco is to deepen the
relationship between the art of listening and the art of expressing oneself musically,
as well as that between music and text.
THE SINGERS:

This troupe concerns young singers mastering the basis of
their art and willing to take their first steps on stage in
professional conditions.
An intense French-American interaction will be favored;
it offers a unique opportunity for the singers from these
two countries to learn from each other.
Priority will be given to candidates less than 28.
This applications’ opening concerns the class joining the troupe in 2008-09
season until 2010-11: the selection takes place one year before in order to give
Opera Fuoco the necessary time to define the program according on each voice.
The 2007-08 class is composed of 4 singers who had participated in the project of La
Finta Giardiniera. Each year, the different classes of singers will take part in the
Troupe together, resulting in a total of 12 singers a year.

The program for the 2nd class is to be determined after the auditions.
Once prepared, the productions will be toured in Paris, throughout France and
abroad, in concerthalls, opera houses and festivals to challenge the young artists
to express themselves before different audiences.
The members of the troupe will be paid on a per project
basis as a freelance artist (French régime de
l’intermittence) on a fixed fee schedule. Accomodation in
room or appartment will be offered to non-residents.
We can also give you details about scholarship application to the Fondation des
Etats-Unis, Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris.

David Stern and Jay Bernfeld will be at the core of this
troupe, with Opera Fuoco’s instrumentalists and choir
singers as well as musicologists Damien Colas and
Alessandro di Profio, and international singers familiar to
the ensemble.
Directors like Yoshi Oïda, choreographers, and video designers will also be
associated with the work to complete the scenic experience.

Créée en 2003 à Paris par David Stern et Jay Bernfeld, Opera
Fuoco est une compagnie dédiée à l’art lyrique sur instruments
d’époque, "atelier d’innovation" cherchant à favoriser la
créativité dans l'interprétation de ce répertoire pour
transformer son écoute en une expérience de vie marquante.
Le travail sur le sens du texte est au cœur de sa démarche. Connues ou à découvrir, les
oeuvres sont choisies dans les répertoires baroque, classique et romantique, avec l'appui
des plus récentes recherches et partagent une densité musicale et dramatique forte.
Les couleurs et la souplesse de l'orchestre, l'intensité dramatique des représentations,
l'énergie articulatoire du chœur, la puissance expressive des chanteurs y compris dans les
récitatifs, les nuances cherchées au cœur du texte et de la musique, ont remporté un vif
succès au Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, au Concertgebouw d'Amsterdam, au Festival de
Lucerne ou au Théâtre de St Quentin en Yvelines, lieu de résidence depuis 2005.
Opera Fuoco collabore avec des chanteurs tels que Matthias Goerne, Paul Agnew, Danielle
De Niese, Patricia Petibon... La sensibilisation du jeune public à l'opéra et le travail avec de
jeunes chanteurs professionnels complètent cette approche qui vise à communiquer au
plus large public la vitalité et l'actualité de ce répertoire aujourd’hui.

National Opera, La Monnaie, Opéras de Lausanne, Luxembourg, Concertgebouw

Edinburgh), en Amérique (Carnegie Hall, Glimmerglass Opera Festival), et en Asie (Opéra
d'Israël, Opéra de Hong-Kong, festival de Pekin). Il sera le directeur musical de l'Opéra de
St Gall à partir de 2008.
Ses qualités pédagogiques et ses expériences à Aix et Royaumont le rendent attentif à
travailler avec de jeunes chanteurs et à les accompagner dans leur carrière. Enfin, ses
convictions le mènent à vouloir communiquer sa passion au plus large public, y compris
celui qui ne va pas spontanément vers ce type de répertoire.

Soliste virtuose, co-fondateur de Capriccio
Stravagante, il a récemment créé Fuoco et
Cenere, avec qui il réalise de nombreux
concerts et enregistrements. Avec Opera
Fuoco, il dirige un continuo riche et varié
et ses qualités de chef de chant passionné
par le répertoire lyrique sont essentielles
pour la préparation des chanteurs.
Created in 2003 in Paris by David Stern and gambist Jay
Bernfeld, Opera Fuoco is devoted to vocal repertoire on period
instruments. The ensemble's creative approach revitalizes vocal
expression by giving greater importance to the text and to all of
the dramatic elements of the repertoire.
Whether performing unknown rarities or established masterpieces, Opera Fuoco’s range
reaches from the Baroque through early Romanticism. With the support of leading
musicologists, it focuses on works that balance musical inspiration with narrative intensity.
The expressive power of the singers, the energy of the orchestra, Stern and Bernfeld's
dramatic intensity have all led to great successes in Paris (Théâtre des Champs-Elysées),
Amsterdam (Concertgebouw) and Switzerland (Lucerne Festival).
Opera Fuoco collaborates regularly with artists such as Danielle De Niese, Matthias
Goerne, Paul Agnew, Patricia Petibon... By reaching out to young audiences and nurturing
young talents as well, it offers a complete and comprehensive approach to the role of an
opera company in today’s cultural landscape. Indeed, their goal is to highlight the vitality

David Stern’s artistic expression stems from his
work with both modern and period instruments.
Inspired by the fusion of voice and theater, he is
also sensitive to the subtleties inherent to stylistic
articulation of period instruments. Representing

a new generation of period-instrument conductors,
Stern strives to give this historic approach new

energy and relevance, while adapting certain
aspects of it with modern ensembles as well.
Having received his Master’s at the Juilliard School, he became the assistant conductor to
John Eliot Gardiner. David Stern was invited to conduct operatic and symphonic
repertoire in France (Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, Opéras de Lyon, Rouen, Strasbourg..), in
Europa (English National Opera, Lausanne, Luxembourg Operas, Amsterdam
Concertgebouw, Wiener Festwochen, Gstaad, Lucerne, Edinburgh Festivals), America
(Carnegie Hall, Glimmerglass Opera Festival), and Asia (Hong Kong Opera, Beijing
Festival). Having focused on 19th century repertoire with Concerto Köln, he is presently a
principal guest of the Basel Chamber Orchestra, and as of the 2008-09 season, he will begin
as musical director of the St Gallen Opera House and Orchestra in Switzerland.
Having worked with young musicians in New York (Stony Brook University), the UK and
France, notably at the Aix-en-Provence Festival and the Fondation Royaumont, Stern has
developed a nurturing approach, helping young artists in their early careers. This
commitment has led him to reach out to a larger and more diverse public, with the hope of
conveying his passion for this oft neglected repertoire.

DIRECTION
Jay Bernfeld has a solid reputation as a
virtuoso player. After Capriccio Stravagante,
he formed the chamber ensemble Fuoco e
Cenere, with which he has given many
concerts and recordings. Within Opera
Fuoco, he leads the continuo group and
his role as a coach is of prime importance
for the preparation of choir and singers.
