Longer Life for Those Who Exercise

Of course we know that exercise is good for us: better health, higher fitness levels, and it doesn’t have to
mean pumping iron. But what if we never quite get round to starting that new regime.
Juran Jawarski only took up regular exercise here four years ago, and he’s noticed the difference.
“I can carry on for an hour on the treadmill and there I don’t sweat.”
“Dare I ask how old you are now?”
“Seventy plus.”
Now researchers have been studying life expectancy for men over 50 to see how much difference physical
activity makes. And if you think you’ve left it too late, this could be good news because it suggests that
taking up regular exercise in middle age can extend your life just as much as starting younger.
Almost half the men in the study group aged 50 were already highly active and they could expect to live
2.3 years longer than those who weren’t. But exercising later in life had the same effect, though only after
10 years of physical activity.
“If you don’t smoke and drink, you can start off at about 50-60, whatever, you’ll feel as healthy as a
young kid.
“The longer you’ll keep going, the longer you’ll keep going. So good news, though, for someone my age.”
Some may see this as a good excuse for putting fitness off until later in life, lunchtime in the pub instead
of in the gym.
“It’s a waste of time exercising…it’s in your genes…you’re either healthy or you’re not”
“I do a lot of exercise actually…this it is my day off”
“I’d advise everyone to, uh, not to exercise until at least 50”
(That’s) not advice the researchers or doctors would want to hear.
“We know than any exercise is better than none. We know that the exercise can make the difference to
your blood pressure, to, uh, your insulin levels, to your weight loss, and, and so it’s important to exercise
at whatever age you are”.
This study suggests that longer life through exercise only happens if it’s sustained over many years. But
researchers want to carry on with their work, to look at the difference for woman, and for other age
groups.
