THE MANY USES OF THE VERB 'FAIRE'= 'TO DO/MAKE' Faire is the most overworked verb in the French language. TO MAKE : Ma mère va faire un gâteau. =My mother is going to make a cake. TO GIVE : Je vais faire une conférence sur la graphologie. =I am going to give a lecture on graphology. TO TAKE : Elle aime faire une promenade au parc. =She likes to take a walk in the park. TO HAVE : Mon mari fait de la tension. =My husband has high blood pressure. TO ACT : Ne fais pas l'idiot. =Don't act the fool. TO FORCE : Je l'ai fait travailler. =I forced him to work. [I made him work.] TO DESCRIBE A HOBBY/SPORT : Ils font de la natation/du ski/du cyclisme. =They go swimming/skiing/cycling. TO EXPRESS MEASUREMENT : La cuisine fait 6 mètres de large. =The kitchen is 6 metres wide. TO HAVE/GET SOMETHING DONE : Ils font construire une maison. =They are having a house built. THE PAST HISTORIC TENSE There is a past tense that you will meet when reading books, magazines and newspapers but almost never in conversation. It is called the past historic or past definite. It is a literary tense and you yourself will only need to use it if you decide to write books etc. in French ! However, you must be able to recognize it. The past historic describes a completed action in the past and, in the case of regular verbs, is formed by removing the '-er', '-ir', '-re' from the infinitive and adding the following endings : '-ER' VERBS '-IR' + '-RE' VERBS je -ai je -is tu -as tu -is il / elle -a il / elle -it nous -âmes nous -îmes vous -âtes vous -îtes ils / elles -èrent ils / elles -irent Examples : Le lendemain Paul arriva tôt.=The following day Paul arrived early. Les touristes visitèrent cinq pays en cinq jours.=The tourists visited five countries in five days.
