Constructed from 1966 to 1977 in the heart of lower
Manhattan, the twin towers were destroyed before the eyes of
the international press on September 11, 2001 during a
terrorist attack that successively veered two hijacked airplanes
into each tower. Veritable architectural wonder of 412 m in
height , the structure of the two towers was surprisingly
simple.
The glass facades set into a light steel trellis absorbed the
force of the winds so that they could not penetrate and bore
the weight of the towers and some 110 floors, each formed by
a concrete plate encompassing 4020 m2. The interior space
was open and thus free of pillars. For their creator, Minoru
Yamasaki, the World Trade Center stood for "a living symbol of
the commitment of mankind to world peace ... a
representation of mankind's belief in humanity, in individual
dignity, in cooperation between men." 35 years later, it was as
an emblem of the economic power of multinational societies
that the tours became a target of attacks alongside the
Pentagon and likely also the White House. This event would
mark, according to numerous analysts, "the beginning of a
new geostrategic era" in world conflic
