Chic is five years old already!
N’était-ce pas juste hier que nous décidions de
lancer le premier magazine de mode à Saint
Barth? Comme le temps passe vite!
Wasn’t it just yesterday that we decided to
launch the first fashion magazine in Saint
Barth. How time flies!
Pour l’édition du cinquième anniversaire,
nous avons choisi un nouveau format très
sympa, une grande taille qui nous permet
d’être plus créatifs, et un peu plus audacieux
dans nos photographies.
Nous avons également ajouté des interviews
de quelques personnes atypiques vivant sur
l’île, exploré le concept des destinations de
mariage dans notre petit coin de paradis, et
visité trois sublimes hôtels de l’île.
For this fifth anniversary edition of Chic,
we have settled on an exciting new size,
a large format that allows us to be more
creative, and a bit more daring in our
photographs.
We’ve also added interviews with a few
quite amazing people who live on the
island, explore the concept of destination
weddings in our own slice of tropical
heaven, and visit three of the island’s
coolest hotels.

Jeweler, actress, and creator of fanciful costumes, Fabienne Miot displays a discriminating talent in terms of imagination and creativity. In addition to
the original works of art she creates in her atelier and the fabulous costumes she creates for Carnival every year, she is also a charming and gracious
woman who has adopted the island of Saint Barth as her own and a great place to raise her children.
Quand as-tu commencé à créer des bijoux? Quel est ton métal préféré?
Quelle est la pièce la plus originale que l’on t’ait commandée?
When did you start making jewelry? Is there a metal you prefer or a
creation that stands out as truly exceptional?
Arrivée à Saint Barth il y a trente-six ans avec mes parents bijoutiers,
j’ai commencé dès mes 15 ans à créer des bijoux. J’ai tout de suite
préféré le travail de l’or, la transformation de la matière en associant
perles et pierres d’exception. Trente-deux ans de métier à Saint Barth,
c’est trente-deux ans d’anecdotes qui vont du bijou romantique, avec la
bague de fiançailles faite à la main en un temps record pour un couple
d’Américains, au bijou des plus incroyable composé d’un morceau de
rotule d’un client rescapé d’un accident d’avion. J’ai le même plaisir et
la même passion, qu’il s’agisse d’une petite ou d’une grosse commande.
L’essentiel est la création d’un bijou unique destiné à une personne bien
précise.
I arrived in Saint Barth 36 years ago with my parents, both jewelers.
I started creating jewelry at the age of 15, and immediately preferred
working with gold. I like the way it transforms by adding exceptional
pearls and precious stones. After 32 years as a jeweler in Saint Barth,
there are at least 32 years of anecdotes that range from an engagement
ring made by hand in record time for an American couple to something
incredible I made from a piece of kneecap for a client who survived a
plane crash. I get the same pleasure and share the same passion, whether
I am working a small piece or a large commission. What’s essential for
me is the creation of an original piece of jewelry intended for a specific
person.
Parle-nous un peu de ton désir de devenir actrice et dans quel esprit
est-ce un avantage pour ta carrière de bijoutière?
How did you develop the desire to become an actress? Is this passion
in addition to your career as a jeweler?
Je regarde le théâtre comme un élément complémentaire de mon
développement personnel. Dans un cadre à la fois ludique et sérieux,
le théâtre me permet d’aller chercher le plaisir de jouer et avant tout
de me dépasser en me montrant convaincante dans la peau d’une
autre personne. J’aime m’investir dans un rôle avec ma personnalité et
mon vécu, et en donnant vie à mon personnage, je ressens pleinement
combien le “jeu” de l’acteur intervient en complément d’un autre art:
la bijouterie et le théâtre font donc bon ménage, et se complètent
merveilleusement bien.
I consider the theatre an additional element in my personal development.
In both a serious and recreational sense, the theatre provides me great
enjoyment, especially in the possibility of not being myself but being truly
convincing as another character. I like investing my personality and
my experience into a role and bringing my character to life. I also feel
strongly that the “art” of an actor is the perfect complement to another
art: that of jewelry making. The two make a good couple, working
together hand-in-hand quite marvelously.
Et tes costumes pour le carnaval... comment les fabriques-tu...
et pourquoi?
Carnaval est un des éléments essentiels de notre patrimoine culturel et
c’est l’événement festif incontournable!! C’est un formidable moment à
vivre que nous attendons tous et je participe activement chaque année
au défilé. J’ai collaboré à trente-cinq carnavals, avec des déguisements
souvent sortis de mon imaginaire. Il y a trois ans, les costumes étaient
entièrement composés de journaux de Saint Barth; j’ai pris un malin
plaisir à choisir de vieux articles. Certains dataient d’il y a quinze ans et
avaient une valeur sentimentale pour chacun de nous. Je pense que le
déguisement marque une rupture avec le quotidien, donne la possibilité
d’être une autre personne, la recherche des costumes et des matériaux,
tout est permis et, bien souvent, je choisis mon thème au dernier
moment: tout est fait maison, et là, il faut mettre les bouchées doubles!!
Mais l’essentiel, c’est de participer!
Depuis quel âge vis-tu à Saint Barth? Comment vois-tu les changements
dans l’île?
Âgée de 12 ans à mon arrivée en 1975, j’ai vu l’île évoluer et se
transformer. La télévision n’existait pas encore, les yaourts non plus
d’ailleurs... On fermait la boutique pour accueillir un ami à l’aéroport,
et le samedi à midi, il valait mieux ne pas avoir oublié de prendre
de l’essence ou de faire ses courses, tout était fermé jusqu’au lundi
matin. Grâce à notre dynamisme, Saint Barth a su valoriser ses atouts
et exploiter ses potentialités. J’ai pleinement conscience d’habiter un
endroit d’exception. J’ai ma vie ici et je m’y plais!
And your fabulous costumes for Carnival, how did you get involved in
the parades, and why?
Carnival is one of the essential elements of our local culture, and the
most incredible event every year! It is an unbelievable experience, and
everybody awaits it with great anticipation. Every year I march in the
parade and have participated in 35 Carnivals, with costumes that
often spring from my imagination. Three years ago I made my costume
entirely from Saint Barth Journals, and I got an odd sense of pleasure in
choosing the articles from old newspapers, some of which were 15 years
old and had sentimental value for all of us. I think a costume represents
a break in your daily routine, and allows you to be someone else. When
it comes to ideas for costumes and materials to use, anything goes, and I
often chose my theme at the last moment. I make everything myself, which
means I have to work twice as hard! But the main thing is to participate.
How long have you lived in Saint Barth and how has the island
changed during that time?
I was 12 years old when I arrived in 1975, and I have watched the
island evolve and transform. Television didn’t exist then, neither did
yoghurt for that matter… You closed the store to go meet a friend at the
airport, and by noon on Saturday you had better have filled your tank or
gotten groceries since everything would be closed until Monday morning.
Yet thanks to our energy, St Barth was able to develop its attributes and
exploit its potential. I am fully aware that I live in an exceptional place.
I have created my life here, and am happy to be here!

À l’hôtel Le Toiny, ce sont les personnes qui comptent. En commençant par l’équipe de gestion, Dagmar et Guy Lombard, qui ont voyagé
de l’Europe au Maroc, acquérant ainsi une solide expérience. Cet hôtel boutique comporte seulement quinze chambres, et nécessite
une véritable implication de la part de ses gestionnaires. De ce fait, les propriétaires – y compris le champion du Tour de France, Lance
Armstrong – ont la chance de pouvoir compter Guy et Dagmar dans leur équipe.
At Hotel Le Toiny, it’s the people that count. Starting at the top it’s the husband and wife management team of Dagmar and Guy Lombard,
who have traveled from Europe to Morocco, pocketing experience along the way. Lucky for Hotel Le Toiny : this boutique hotel with just 15
rooms requires pure sophistication from its managers. In this case, the owners - including Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong - are
lucky to have Guy and Dagmar riding on their team.
Des mots à la mode comme “vert” et “biologique” pimentent leur
conversation au sujet de l’hôtel: “Nous sommes dans une zone verte”,
affirme Guy, désignant un grand morceau de terre non construit qui
surplombe la mer. “L’hôtel détient plus de 40 ares – et quelques chèvres
– et nous respectons énormément l’environnement.” Ce respect va de la
conservation de l’eau à la participation des clients qui sont sollicités pour
indiquer le moment où ils souhaitent que leurs draps et serviettes soient
changés, en passant par l’acquisition de trois serres dans lesquelles l’hôtel
fait pousser des fruits et des légumes sur sept niveaux, dans des pots
en fibre de noix de coco. Les invités ne le savent peut-être pas, mais les
herbes, la laitue, les courgettes, les épinards, les citrouilles, les aubergines
et plusieurs variétés de tomates qu’ils trouvent dans leurs assiettes
proviennent de ce jardin biologique.
Buzzwords like “green,” and “organic” pepper their conversation
about the hotel: “We are in a green zone,” says Guy, gesturing to
a large undeveloped point of land that overlooks the sea. “The
hotel owns over 40 acres — and a few goats — and we have an
enormous respect for the environment.” This respect ranges from
the conservation of water, and asking the guests to play along
by indicating when they want their sheets and towels changed,
to a series of three greenhouses where the hotel grows fruits and
vegetables on seven levels in pots of coconut fiber. Guests might
not realize it, but the herbs, lettuce, zucchini, spinach, pumpkin
squash, eggplant, and several varieties of tomatoes they find on
their plates come from this organic garden.
Au cours des trois années pendant lesquelles Guy et Dagmar ont géré Le
Toiny, des améliorations subtiles, autres que la rénovation des chambres
durant l’automne 2008, ont été effectuées. “Nous tentons de répondre
aux demandes de nos clients”, déclare Dagmar, l’air pensif. “Quelqu’un a
demandé un petit sac isotherme pour emmener des produits à la plage;
alors nous cherchons un sac élégant que nos hôtes pourraient utiliser lors
de randonnées ou sur la plage. Nous pourrions également préparer des
pique-niques à emporter.”
In the three years they have been at Hotel Le Toiny, Guy and
Dagmar have continually looked for ways to make subtle
improvements, other than the visible renovation of the rooms
in the fall of 2008. “We try to respond to requests made by the
guests,” says Dagmar, looking thoughtful. “Someone asked for a
small cooler in the room to take to the beach, so we are looking
for a tasteful insulated bag people could use for hikes out on the
point or at the beach. We could make picnics they could take
along as well.”
Un pique-nique élaboré par le chef primé de l’hôtel Le Toiny, Stéphane
Mazieres, serait un immense plaisir, car il est l’un des grands chefs ayant
gagné le trophée du groupe d’hôtels Relais & Châteaux et à être encensé
par les critiques – le premier d’un établissement des Caraïbes. Après
trois ans aux commandes et deux ans à seconder, Stéphane Mazieres est
un autre des membres de l’équipe qui s’ajoute à l’expérience de l’hôtel
Le Toiny. “Nous somme également le seul hôtel de l’île à proposer un
sommelier; son nom est Céline Dalben”, fait remarquer Dagmar, en
soulignant que la liste des vins comprend plus de 300 sélections.
A picnic tossed together by the award-winning chef at the Toiny,
Stephane Mazieres, would be quite the treat, as he is one of
the acclaimed Grand Chef trophy winners among the Relais
et Chateaux group of hotels — the first from a property in the
Caribbean. In his third year as chef, after two years as souschef, Mazieres is another team member that adds to the Toiny
experience. “We are also the only hotel on the island to have a
female sommelier, her name is Celine Dalben,” notes Dagmar,
noting that the wine list has over 300 selections.
“Chaque été, nous effectuons une sélection spéciale des vins de France”,
ajoute Guy. “Certains de ces vins sont très rares et viennent directement
des vignobles. Le sommelier peut recommander des vins spécifiques
à chaque client, et parler de l’endroit où ils sont produits. Cela rend le
tout beaucoup plus intéressant.” Parler de nourriture rappelle à Dagmar
les confitures inhabituelles qui sont servies au petit déjeuner: “Dès cette
année, les clients pourront les acheter et les ramener chez eux comme petit
souvenir”, déclare-t-elle.
“Each summer we make special selections of wines from France,”
adds Guy. “Some of these wines are very rare and come directly
from the vineyards. The sommelier can recommend specific wines
for each guest, and explain about where they were produced. That
makes it more interesting.” Talking about food reminds Dagmar
of the unusual home-made jams they serve for breakfast: “ as of
this year they will be for sale for guests to take home as a little
souvenir,” she says.
“Nous avons un excellent personnel, dont beaucoup de membres sont
ici depuis plusieurs années”, déclare Guy, renforçant la notion que les
individus passent en premier, de ceux qui séjournent à l’hôtel à ceux
qui y travaillent. Cette attention aux personnes est à l’évidence payante
puisque l’hôtel Le Toiny apparaît sur la Liste Dorée 2010 de Condé Nat
comme étant le meilleur hôtel de toutes les Caraïbes en ce qui concerne la
nourriture. Manifestement un bon point pour les personnes qui comptent.
“We have a great staff, many have been here for many years,”
says Guy, reinforcing the notion that people come first, from those
who stay at the hotel to those who work there. This attention to
people obviously pays off as Hotel Le Toiny pops up on CondeNast’s 2010 Gold List as the best hotel for food in the Caribbean.
Clearly a feather in the cap of the people who count.

Guillermo De Yavorsky est un homme à plusieurs facettes: c’est un citoyen français mais il est né à Caracas, au Venezuela. Son père est
vénézuélien. Sa mère était chilienne. Ses filles sont françaises. “Cela a toujours été comme ça chez nous dit-il, nous avons toujours été une
famille composée de différentes nationalités”. Peut-être est-ce la double personnalité française-vénézuélienne qui a amené De Yavorsky à
St Barth, où les citoyens de plusieurs pays se mêlent et se mélangent facilement.
Guillermo De Yavorsky is a man of many facets: he is a French citizen, but was born in Caracas Venezuela. His dad is Venezuelian. His mom
was Chilean. His daughters are French. “It has always been like that for us,” he says. “We have always been a family of mixed nationalities.”
Perhaps it is this French-Venezuelan double persona that caused De Yavorsky to settle in Saint Barth, where citizens of many different
countries mix and mingle easily.
“Je vis sur l’île depuis 2003”, raconte Guillermo De Yavorsky, qui a suivi
une formation d’architecte à Caracas il y a 20 ans. Il y a rencontré la
famille Contreras, propriétaire de l’hôtel Le Sereno à Grand Cul de Sac.
“Je suis d’abord venu sur l’île pour construire le Sereno pendant deux ans,
projet conçu par le designer français Christian Liaigre”.
A l’époque, Guillermo avait vécu dix ans à Londres et y travaillait en tant
que photographe: “Je voulais quitter Londres, il faisait trop froid, trop
gris, c’était trop grand, je suis un homme fait pour les climats doux.”
Les Antilles conviennent mieux à son tempérament.
“I have lived on the island since 2003,” says Guillermo De Yavorsky,
who trained 20 years ago to be an architect in Caracas, where he
met the Contreras family, owners of Le Sereno hotel in Grand Cul de
Sac. “I first came to the island to work on the Sereno for two years,
project created by the French designer Christian Liaigre.” At the time,
Guillermo had been living in London for ten years, working as a
photographer: “I wanted to leave London, it was too cold, too gray,
too big, I am a warm climate kind of guy.” The Caribbean better
suits his temperament.
De plus, il était prêt à fonder une famille et l’incertitude d’une carrière de
photographe fut laissée de côté au profit de l’architecture, une autre des
passions de Guillermo. “A Saint Barth, j’ai rencontré Johannes Zingerle,
qui a atterri sur l’île avec l’ouragan Luis en 1995. Il est architecte DPLG
français, et nous avons commencé à travailler sur des projets à St Kitts
et au Mexique en 2005” explique-t-il. En 2008, Guillermo et Johannes
ont été rejoints par un troisième partenaire, Alain Rolley, et ensemble,
ils ont créé design affairs, un bureau d’architectes et de designers basé à
Gustavia.
In addition he was ready to start a family and the uncertainty of a
photographic career was put aside for architectural design, another
of Guillermo’s passions in life. “In Saint Barth, I met Johannes
Zingerle, who landed on the island with hurricane Luis in 1995
and is a French licensed D.P.L.G architect, and we started working
on projects in St Kitts and Mexico in 2005,” he explains. By 2008,
Guillermo and Johannes were joined by a third partner, Alain
Rolley, and created Design Affairs, a combination of architects and
designers based in Gustavia.
Un de leurs projets en cours est la rénovation de l’aéroport Gustaf III
de Saint Barth. “Nous voulions garder la même sensation d’ouverture
qu’il y a en ce moment” dit Guillermo. “L’aéroport doit faire partie de
l’expérience tropicale, et il doit vous dire que l’île est différente des autres,
vous venez d’arriver à Saint Barth.”
One of their current projects is the refurbishment of Saint Barth’s
Gustaf III airport. “We wanted to keep the same open feeling there
is now,” says Guillermo. “The airport should be part of the tropical
experience, and let you know this island is different from the others,
you have arrived in Saint Barth.”
En ce qui concerne le rôle d’architecte et de designer sur une petite
île, Guillermo doit occasionnellement faire face à un grand dilemme:
“Certains clients veulent que tout soit le plus grand possible… sans
garder l’esprit de l’île et tenir compte de la consommation énergétique”,
explique-t-il. “La question de l’énergie est une situation complexe
dans laquelle je tente de faire au mieux la balance entre le respect du
désir des clients et le respect de mes propres convictions. Je suggère
d’autres solutions et essaye également d’inciter les clients à réellement
vivre l’expérience des Antilles, et à ne pas rechercher par habitude le
tout climatisé. “Mais je dois avouer, et je pense sincèrement, que le
développement de Saint Barth a été meilleur qu’ailleurs aux Antilles.”
As for the role of an architect and designer on a small island,
Guillermo is occasionally caught in a bind: “Some clients want
everything as big as possible…not in keeping with the spirit of the
Island or taking in to account the energy consumption,” he says.
“Energy consumption is a very complex issue in which I am trying
to do my best, to swing between the respect of client’s desire and
my own convictions. I suggest alternative solutions and encourage
clients to live the Caribbean experience and not, the habit of having
air-conditioning everywhere. But I have to say, and believe, that the
development of Saint Barth has been better than elsewhere in the
Caribbean.”
Deux autres projets sur lequel Guillermo a travaillé avec Christian Liaigre
sont la villa de Larry Gagosian sur la plage à Flamands et les trois Villas
du Sereno, ce qui lui a permis de collaborer avec de grands noms du
monde du design.
Two other projects in which Guillermo work on collaboration with
Christian Liaigre are, a Larry Gagosian villa on Flamands’ beach,
and the new villas of Le Sereno, this experience allowed him to
collaborate with highly rated designers from around the world
Les travaux de rénovation de l’Hôtel Christopher sont une autre création
de design affairs dans laquelle Guillermo et Johannes ont travaillé sur le
design et le concept général de l’hôtel, avec Cristina Rodriguez, designer
invitée, ainsi qu’avec Lotus Architecte en tant que maitre d’œuvre. “Sur
ce projet, nous avons utilisé la structure existante autant que possible,
nous avons amélioré l’aspect sans tout démolir. Il y a maintenant une
magnifique sensation de l’espace extérieur au sein de l’hôtel.”
The renovation of the Christopher Hotel is another of Design Affairs
creations, Guillermo and Johannes worked, on the design and general
concept, in collaboration with guest designer Cristina Rodriguez, and
Lotus Architecture as execution architects (maitre d’oeuvre). “On this
project, we used the existing structure as much as possible, improved
the look without demolishing everything. There is a now wonderful
sense of the tropics around the pool area in the heart of the hotel.
Quelle serait la maison de rêve pour Guillermo De Yavorsky? “Je pense
toujours à cela” admet-il. “Cela serait une maison très ouverte, petite, avec
beaucoup de bois, de pierres, le moins de béton possible et une végétation
abondante, pas nécessairement une vue sur mer.” Il vit actuellement
heureux entouré de jardins, avec des papayes, des tomates, des citrons et
un corossolier. “Nous nous réveillons avec le chant des oiseaux tous les
matins, c’est très paisible.”
What would Guillermo’s dream house be? “I always think about
that,” he admits. “It would be a very open house, small, with a lot
of wood, and stone, as little concrete as possible, not necessarily with
sea views, and lots of trees.” He currently lives happily surrounded
by garden views, with papaya, tomatoes, lemons, and a corossol
tree. “We wake up with the birds singing every morning, it is very
peaceful”.

reflètent que la lumière naturelle capturée par
l’objectif lors de deux occasions particulières.
La première est la nuit précédant l’ouragan
Earl, au mois d’août, lorsque les cieux étaient
remplis de couleurs électriques, spectaculaires,
satisfaisant les espérances. La seconde est la
nuit de pleine lune, alors que l’illumination
lunaire accompagnait l’équinoxe à la fin du
mois de septembre. Ce sont les nuits qui
enveloppent St Barth d’un air mystérieux et
d’un sentiment d’illusion, confirmant ainsi sa
beauté absolue.
An island drenched in the most incredible
light, tempting the eye of the photographer
Alexandre Abela. These images are 100%
untouched, reflecting only the natural
light caught by the lens on two exceptional
occasions. The first was night before hurricane
Earl in August when the skies were electric
with color, dramatic in dimension, and ripe
with expectation. The second was the night of
the harvest moon, the full lunar illumination
that accompanied the fall equinox in late
September. These are the nights that wrap
Saint Barth in an air of mystery, a sense of
illusion, and confirm its absolute beauty.

Jean-Louis Rossi a survécu à l’ouragan Earl à bord d’un voilier long de 38 mètres dans le port de Gustavia. Il est soit très courageux soit
fou ou peut-être un peu des deux. Dix jours après l’ouragan, fumant des Gauloises sans filtre dans un restaurant en bord de front de mer à
Gustavia, il semblait calme à ce sujet, mais l’on pouvait sentir que cela avait été une expérience extrêmement dangereuse pour Rossi, une de
celles qu’il espère ne pas avoir à traverser une seconde fois.
Jean-Louis Rossi rode out hurricane Earl on a 38’ sailboat in the harbor of Gustavia. He is either very brave or foolish, or perhaps a
combination of both. Ten days after the storm, smoking unfiltered Gauloises in a waterfront café, he seemed calm and matter of fact about it
all, but one senses this was a life-threatening experience for Rossi, one he hopes he doesn’t have to live through a second time.
Son voilier s’appelle “Ombre blanche”, traduction de l’anglais
“White Shadow”, et est le dernier d’une série de cinq bateaux de ce
nom possédés par sa famille en Angleterre. “Le premier appartenait
à mon grand-père, et servait à transporter de la soie”, déclare Rossi.
Aujourd’hui, ce bateau de 112 mètres se trouve à Marseille.
His sailboat is called “Ombre Blanche,” translated from
the English “White Shadow” as the first in a series of five boats by
this name owned by his family started out in England. “The first
one was owned by my grandfather, and used to transport silk,”
says Rossi. Today, that 112’ vessel can still be found in Marseille.
“Personne dans ma famille n’a jamais perdu un bateau, touchons du
bois”, affrime Rossi, un Corse, ayant tissé de forts liens avec les îles et
la mer. Il arriva à Saint Barth quelques mois avant que l’ouragan Earl
ne frappe, en août 2010, déferlant sur les côtes de l’île avec des vents
d’environ 240 km/h. “J’ai survécu à mon premier ouragan sur un bateau
à Madagascar il y a trente-sept ans”, se souvient Rossi. “Il n’y avait pas de
bulletins météo à l’époque et nous avons tiré le bateau dans un canal le
long de la côte. C’était bien moins effrayant que celui-ci.”
“No one in my family has ever lost a boat, knock on wood,” says
Rossi, a Frenchman from Corsica, with strong ties to islands
and the sea. He arrived in Saint Barth just a few months before
hurricane Earl hit in August 2010, battering the shores of the
island with 150mph winds. “I survived my first hurricane on a
boat in Madagascar 37 years ago,” Rossi recalls. “There were no
weather reports at the time and we pulled the boat into a canal
along the coast. That was a lot less scary than this.”
Le bateau de Rossi, qui est également sa maison, était plus ou moins

Lorsqu’il entendit les bulletins météo annonçant qu’un ouragan de
catégorie 2 se déplaçait vers Saint Barth, Rossi décida de rester sur le
bateau et d’affronter l’orage.
Rossi’s boat, which is also his home, was more or less stranded in
the port of Gustavia earlier this summer when the shipyard called
and told him that a number of boats in the same series had a
problem with the rudder. He was told not move the boat too much
until it was fixed, which meant sailing to Saint Martin, but the
shipyard didn’t have room at the time. When he heard reports of a
category two hurricane coming toward Saint Barth, Rossi decided
to stay on the boat and brave the storm.
Puce, la femme de Rossi, et leur boxer Chloé restèrent avec des amis
proches, la famille Soizec, sur le rivage. Ils avaient tous peur pour Rossi,
un homme approchant des 65 ans, semi-retraité et travaillant dans les
équipements frigorifiques pour les bars et les restaurants. Les gendarmes
et les sauveteurs régionaux des services de la mer (CROSS) appelèrent
à plusieurs reprises pendant la tempête pour s’assurer que Rossi allait
bien, mais même si cela n’avait pas été le cas, ils n’auraient pas pu faire
grand-chose pour l’aider avec des vents si forts et des vagues atteignant
une hauteur de 20 mètres à l’intérieur du port.
“Cela a commencé aux alentours de 5 heures du matin le lundi 30 août”,
se souvient Rossi, qui était seul sur le bateau depuis la veille au soir.
“La mer était agitée, avec beaucoup de houle et de fortes rafales de vent.
C’était comme être dans une machine à laver. Mon bateau était amarré
à l’extérieur du port, un peu après l’Hôtel de la Collectivité.” Même
s’il était bien ancré, le bateau glissa, tirant son bloc d’ancrage de 2,5
tonnes et commença à se déplacer vers les rochers. “Un autre bateau se
dirigeait vers les rochers, et finit par heurter le rivage”, raconta Rossi.
Son propriétaire atteignit la terre ferme, mais lui, Rossi, pensait qu’il était
obligé, que c’était un point d’honneur, de ne pas laisser son bateau.
“Je ne voulais pas que des générations d’ancêtres se retournent dans
leurs tombes”, plaisante-t-il. “J’ai activé les moteurs en marche arrière
pendant trois heures pour éviter de heurter le bateau qui se trouvait à
côté de moi.”
Rossi’s wife, Puce, and their boxer Chloe, stayed with close friends,
the Soizec family, on shore. They were all anxious for Rossi, a man
close to 65 years old, who is semi-retired and works in refrigeration
for bars and restaurants. The gendarmes and the regional rescue
at sea service (CROSS) called a few times during the ordeal to
make sure Rossi was okay, but even if he wasn’t, there wasn’t much
anyone could have done to help him with such high winds and
waves surging as high as 20’ in the harbor.
“It started at about 5am on Monday, August 30,” recalls Rossi,
who had been alone on the boat since the evening before. “The seas
were rough, with big swells and powerful gusts of wind. It was like
being in a washing machine. My boat was moored in the outer
harbor, a little past the Hôtel de la Collectivité.” Even though it
was well-anchored, the boat became to slip, even lifting its 2.5 ton
mooring block and starting to move toward the rocks. “Another
boat headed toward the rocks, eventually hitting the shore, at
which point the owner made it safely to dry land,” Rossi notes.
But he felt it was an obligation, a point of honor, not to leave his
boat. “I didn’t want generations of my ancestors to be spinning in
their graves,” he says. “I ran the motors in reverse for three hours
to avoid hitting the boat next to me.”

Vers 7 heures du matin, Rossi avait stabilisé “Ombre blanche” avec
deux ancres et le bloc d’ancrage. Cela fut de bon augure, car les vents
commencèrent réellement à hurler. “Pendant la journée, le bateau
chavira trois fois, avec le mât à plat sur l’eau”, explique-t-il. “Avec le poids
de la quille, le bateau se redressera toujours s’il n’est pas endommagé”,
remarque-t-il, et par miracle, il n’y eut aucun dégât sur le bateau de
Rossi, autre que l’eau haute de 30 cm qui se déversait pendant la
tempête. Et son canot qui dériva.
By 7am, Rossi had “Ombre Blanche” stabilized with two anchors
and the mooring block. Luckily as that is when the winds really
started howling. “During the day, the boat capsized three times,
with the mast flat against the water,” he explains. “From the
weight of the keel, the boat will always right itself if there is no
damage,” he points out, and by miracle there was no damage to
Rossi’s boat, other than the foot of water that poured in during the
storm. And his dinghy floated away, lost at sea.

Rossi, qui ne quitta pas son bateau avant le mardi soir, 48 heures après
être monté à bord. “J’avais de l’eau et de la nourriture pour quatre jours,
on ne sait jamais”, déclare Rossi. “À un moment, j’ai pensé lever l’ancre
et aller en mer, en me disant que cela serait mieux de rester à flot dans
les vagues que d’abîmer l’ancre.” Mais il y réfléchit à deux fois, et décida
de ne pas bouger le bateau.
On Monday afternoon, the Soizecs and Puce came to the dock to
show their solidarity for Rossi, who did not leave the boat until
Tuesday evening, a full 48 hours after he had boarded. “I had
food and water for four days, you never know,” says Rossi.
“At one point I considered lifting the anchors and heading out
to sea, thinking it might be better to be afloat in the waves than
battered at anchor.” But he thought twice, and stayed put.
“Je suis resté calme tout le temps, c’était difficile”, raconte Rossi. “Vous ne
pouvez pas vous permettre de paniquer, et devez résoudre les problèmes
un par un.” Rossi commença en maillot de bain, mais au fur et à mesure

réfléchissantes et un masque de plongée pour gagner en visibilité sous
la forte pluie; en effet, il avait du mal à voir au-delà du bord du bateau.
“J’écoutais le canal 16 de la VHF et toutes dix minutes, un SOS était
lancé à Saint-Martin”, dit-il. “La chose dont je me souviens le plus est le
bruit des vagues, je pouvais les entendre arriver jusqu’à moi, comme le
bruit d’un avion prêt à décoller.”
“I stayed calm throughout, working hard,” Rossi reports.
“You cannot afford to panic, and have to solve the problems one
by one.” Rossi started out dressed in a bathing suit, but as the
storm progressed he donned his bright red rain slicker with
day-glow stripes and a diver’s mask to gain visibility in the heavy
rain when he could barely see past the edge of the boat. “I listened
to VHF channel 16 and every few minutes there was an SOS in
St Martin,” he says. “The thing I remember most is the noise of
the waves, you could hear then coming at you, like the noise of an
airplane ready to take off.”
Rossi passa presque tout l’ouragan sur le pont, attaché par un harnais
aux bouées de sauvetage qui se trouvaient le long du bateau. “Je préférais
voir ce qui se passait”, admet-il, ajoutant qu’il ne dormait que par demiheures. “Toutes les heures, j’allais à l’avant du bateau pour m’assurer
que les ancres et les chaînes étaient solides et que rien ne flottait devant
ou autour de moi.” Il utilisa son GPS pour garder une trace de sa
position, mais éteignait tout à chaque fois que le bateau était sur le côté.
Heureusement, son équipement électronique resta sec.
Rossi spent most of the storm on deck, attached by harness to the
lifelines that run along the sides of the boat. “I preferred to see
what was going on,” he admits, adding he would sleep for a halfhour at a time. “Every few hours I would go to the front of the
boat and make sure the anchors and chains were secure and that
nothing was floating around in front of me.” He used his GPS to
keep track of his position, but turned everything off each time the
boat was on its side. Luckily his electronics stayed dry.
Avec sa nature corse autonome et bornée, Rossi était probablement
plus apte à faire face à ce type d’aventure que la plupart d’entre nous.
Il a aussi passé une grande partie de sa vie sur des bateaux, à naviguer
presque tout autour du monde, passant ainsi le cap Horn et le cap
de Bonne-Espérance, et traversant le canal de Panama. Rossi prévoit
toujours des vivres à bord d’“Ombre blanche”. Il pense rester dans le
port de Gustavia pour au moins cinq années supplémentaires, avant de
se diriger vers de nouvelles aventures en mer. “Je ne conseillerais pas de
faire face à un ouragan comme Earl”, dit-il. “Cela n’est pas une bonne
idée si vous pouvez l’éviter!”
With his self-reliant, insular Corsican nature, Rossi was perhaps
more suited to this type of adventure than most. He has also spent
most of his life on boats, has sailed pretty most of the way around
the world, passing Cape Horn and Cape of Good Hope, as well as
crossing the Panama Canal. Rossi is still planning to live aboard
“Ombre Blanche” in the port of Gustavia for at least another five
years, before he heads off on new adventures at sea. “I wouldn’t
recommend riding out a storm like Earl,” he says. “It’s not a good
idea if you can avoid it!”

De plus en plus de futurs mariés se rendent à Saint Barth pour le mariage de leurs rêves, une destination où la carte postale tropicale prend
vie. Rien ne peut concurrencer les plages de sable blanc de l’île, les eaux turquoises, et les villas et hôtels de luxe comme décor pour les
“Oui, je le veux”. Même la robe de mariée la plus fantastique peut s’adapter à une cérémonie sur la plage et danser sous les palmiers agités
lors d’une nuit de pleine lune sous les tropiques. La vraie essence du romantisme!
Wedding bells that is, as more brides and grooms are heading to Saint Barth for their dream wedding, a destination wedding where the
destination is a tropical postcard come to life. Nothing can beat the island’s white sandy beaches, sparkling turquoise seas, and luxury villas
and hotels as a backdrop for saying “I Do”. Even the most fantastic wedding dress can adapt to a ceremony on the beach and dancing under
the swaying palm trees on a moonlit tropical night. The very essence of romance!

Par chance, Saint Barth dispose également d’une église
anglicane où le pasteur réside et célébre des cérémonies religieuses
pour les mariages et les renouvellements de vœux, car de nombreux
couples se sont déjà officiellement unis lors d’une cérémonie civile
chez eux. Il y a également quelques organisateurs de mariages tel
que “DK events” qui disposent du savoir-faire et des moyens de
concevoir une célébration de mariage pour cinquante invités dans un
cadre privé ou bien pour quelques centaines d’invités dans le cadre et
l’ambiance d’un hôtel 4 étoiles.
Pourquoi Saint Barth? Comme un couple de New York nous l’a
raconté: “C’est le premier voyage que mon nouveau mari/petit ami
à l’époque et moi avons fait ensemble il y a dix ans. Il ne voulait pas
me dire où nous allions, il m’a juste dit “Prends ton maillot de bain,
ton passeport et quelques affaires.” Bien sûr j’ai oublié mon maillot
de bain! Eh bien… ce n’est pas très grave à Saint Barth, n’est-ce pas?
Lors de notre troisième voyage, deux ans plus tard, il m’a demandée
en mariage après un long dîner romantique. Après notre premier
voyage et la demande en mariage, il nous a paru évident de nous
marier à Saint Barth.”
Il y a également des mariages des familles vivant à Saint Barth, qui
peuvent compter jusqu’à 400 ou 500 personnes, en particulier si les
mariés font partie de la grande « famille » de Saint Barth qui remonte
aux colons français qui sont arrivés ici au cours des XVII et XVIIIe
siècles. Vous pouvez tout de suite dire si vous êtes invité à un mariage
typique de Saint Barth grâce aux noms de famille de l’heureux
couple, de Aubin à Brin et de Questel à Stakelborough, en passant
par Gréaux, Laplace, Ledée et Magras.
Ces mariages débutent généralement au domicile de la mariée
où tout le monde décore sa voiture avec des fleurs et des rubans
pour une procession de klaxon jusqu’à la mairie de Gustavia. Ici,
le président du conseil de l’île ou l’un de ses adjoints s’occupe de
la partie civile de la cérémonie. Ceux ayant un penchant religieux
se rendent ensuite à l’église de leur choix pour une bénédiction
nuptiale. Puis la fête peut commencer.
Les mariés accueillent chaque invité à la réception avec de
la dentelle, et acceptent leurs cadeaux (de nos jours, ce sont
principalement des enveloppes…). Une quantité impressionnante
de gâteaux de mariage – le préféré est composé de raisins trempés
dans du whisky avec du glaçage blanc – et du champagne sont servis
aux invités. Plus tard dans la soirée, des soupes et des sandwichs
sont proposés, une tradition qui date du temps où les jeunes mariés
rentraient chez eux à pied depuis l’église, où quelques grand-mères
gardaient une chaude soupe de bienvenue sur le feu.
La soupe n’est pas la seule chose qui soit chaude puisque
la température sur la piste de danse est sûre d’atteindre des
températures frôlant celles des saunas au fur et à mesure que la foule
augmente. Une groupe de musiciens ou un DJ continue à monter
le volume et fait danser les invités. Malgré la chaleur, les couples
de tout âge semblent capables de danser pendant des heures sans
s’arrêter, tournant aisément au son du zouk et de la soca, du calypso
ou meringue, en passant par une valse, une polka ou même un swing.
Eh oui, un mariage à Saint Barth – que les mariés soient locaux ou
qu’ils viennent de loin – est idéal pour danser toute la nuit!
Luckily Saint Barth also has an Anglican Church where
the resident vicar is more than happy to host religious ceremonies for
weddings as well as renewal of vows, as many couples have already
officially tied the knot in a civil ceremony back home. There are also
a few very savvy wedding planners such “DK Events” who have the
know-how and accoutrements to style a wedding celebration for 50
guests in a private setting or a few hundred guests in the ambiance
of a four-star hotel.
Why Saint Barth? As one New York City couple reports: “It was
the very first trip my now husband/then new boyfriend and I took
together ten years ago. He wouldn’t tell me where we were going,
only said, “Pack your swim suit and your passport and little else.”
Of course I forgot my swimsuit! Oh well...doesn’t really matter on
Saint Barth, now does it? On our third trip, two years later, he
proposed after a long romantic meal. After the first trip and the
proposal, it seemed natural for us to get married in St. Barth.”
In addition to destination weddings, there are also Saint Barth
family weddings, at which the parties can number well over 400
or 500 people, especially if the bride and groom are part of the
big Saint Barth “family” that stretches back to the original French
settlers that eked out an existence here in the 17th and 18h centuries.
You can tell immediately if you are invited to a typical “Saint Barth”
wedding by the last names of the happy couple, from Aubin to Brin,
and Questel to Stakelborough by way of Gréaux, Laplace, Ledée and
Magras.
These weddings usually start out with the family gathering at the
home of the bride where everyone decorates their car with flowers,
lace, and ribbons for a horn-honking processional to the town hall in
Gustavia. Here, the president of the island council or one of his veeps
takes care of the civil side of the ceremony. Those with a religious
bent then trundle off to the church of their choice for a nuptial
benediction by the priest. Then the fun begins.
The bride and groom greet every guest at the reception, often
stationed for much of the evening on a sofa covered with lace in a
corner of the room, and accepting their gifts (these days primarily
envelopes…). An endless supply of wedding cake — the local favorite
has raisins soaked in whisky with sweet white frosting — and
champagne are served to arriving guests. Later in the evening soup
and sandwiches are served, a tradition that dates from the time when
the newlyweds walked home from the church to their new home, with
a few grandmothers keeping a welcoming soup warm on the fire.
The soup isn’t the only thing that’s hot as the temperature on the
dance floor is guaranteed to rise to sauna-like temperatures as the
crowd increases. A live band or DJ continues to pump up the volume
and keep everybody dancing. In spite of the heat, couples of all
ages seem to be able to dance for hours without stopping, spinning
effortlessly from zouk and soca to calypso and meringue, by way of
an occasional waltz, polka or even a jitterbug. As a Saint Barth
wedding — whether the bride and groom are local or have come from
afar — is the perfect place to dance the night away!

Quelques jours avant de partir à Saint-Barthélemy, Nadia ignorait totalement qu’elle allait se marier cette semaine-là. Mais son petit ami,
et maintenant mari, Adrian, l’avait invitée en vacances sans mentionner la destination. Après vingt heures de voyage depuis la Belgique, ils
arrivèrent à Porto Rico, et la suite appartient à l’histoire, et l’histoire de ce surprenant mariage, la voici…
Just a few days before her destination wedding in Saint Barthélemy, Nadia had no idea she was even getting married that week. But her boyfriend, and
now husband, Adrian had invited her on a vacation without disclosing the destination. After 20 hours of travel from Belgium, they arrived in Puerto
Rico, and the rest is history, as the story of this surprising wedding unfolds.
Comment avez-vous fini par vous marier à Saint Barth?
Nous étions sur la plage à Porto Rico, et Adrian m’a dit de regarder
un avion qui passait par là. J’ai tout juste eu le temps de voir l’avion et
de comprendre son message : “Nadia, veux-tu m’épouser?”… Alors,
Adrian a ouvert une petite boîte avec cette magnifique bague de
fiançailles à l’intérieur. Mais ce n’est pas tout… il a ensuite dit “Nous
prenons un bateau cet après-midi et nous nous marions dans quatre
jours… tous nos amis sont là.” Je me suis retournée et j’ai vu tous
mes plus proches amis, ainsi que mes parents et mes beaux-parents.
C’était très émouvant… alors j’ai couru vers l’océan et me suis jetée
à l’eau. Adrian avait préparé la surprise pendant plusieurs mois avec
la complicité de nos meilleurs amis et de nos familles. Nous sommes
montés à bord du bateau, SeaDream, pour une magnifique croisière,
et pendant notre escale à Saint-Barthélemy, la mère de notre ami
nous attendait chez elle, où le mariage devait avoir lieu. Elle avait tout
organisé comme une vraie pro. Le capitaine du bateau nous a mariés
et la cérémonie sur la plage de Saint-Barthélemy est un moment que
je n’oublierai jamais.
How did you end up getting married in Saint Barth ?
We were on the beach in Puerto Rico, and Adrian told me to look
up at a plane that was flying by. I hardly had time to see the plane
and understand its message: “Nadia: will you marry me ?”… Then
Adrian opened a small box containing a magnificent engagement
ring. But that’s not all… then he said, “We are getting on a boat
this afternoon and getting married in four days… all of our
friends are here.” I turned around and saw my closest friends, as
well as my parents and my in-laws. It was very emotional… so I
ran toward the ocean and threw myself into the water.
Adrian had been preparing this surprise for several months
with the complicity of our best friend and family. We got on the
ship, SeaDream, for a lovely cruise and during our stop in Saint
Barthelemy, the mother of our friend was waiting for us at her
house, where the wedding was held. She had organized everything
like a real pro. The captain of the ship married us, and that
ceremony on the beach in Saint Barthélémy is something I will
never forget.
Combien d’invités étaient présents et quelles ont été leurs
impressions sur l’île?
Nous étions vingt-quatre au total. Mes plus proches amis, mes parents,
et mes beaux-parents étaient là et avaient gardé le secret jusqu’au
bout. Je ne me suis jamais, ne serait-ce qu’un seul instant, doutée de ce
qui m’attendait. Nous sommes tombés amoureux de la beauté de l’île,
et avons tout simplement adoré les deux jours passés à Saint Barth.
How many guests came with you and what were their
impressions of the island ?
We were 24 all together. My closest friends, parents, and in-laws
were all there and they kept the secret right to the very end. I never
for a minute suspected what was awaiting me. We fell in love with
the beauty of the island, and simply adored the two days we spent
in Saint Barth.

What was the most fantastic moment ?
The most fantastic moment was the ceremony on the beach, with
special lighting that created a wonderful atmosphere.
Quels sont vos meilleurs souvenirs de cette journée?
J’ai d’excellents souvenirs de cet instant unique et rare. Le fait d’avoir
été entourée par ma famille et mes meilleurs amis dans un paradis
tropical, la beauté de l’île, le cadre, la surprise… tout a contribué à
faire de mon mariage un évènement totalement surréaliste et magique
que je peux revivre dans son intégralité grâce aux photos prises par
Alexandre Abela lors de la cérémonie sur la plage de Saint Barth.
And your best memories of the experience ?
I have great souvenirs of this unique and uncommon experience.
The fact that I was surrounded by my family and best friends in
a tropical paradise, the beauty of the island, the environment, the
surprise… all contributed to make my wedding a totally surreal
and magical event that I can relive in its entirety thanks to the
photos taken during the ceremony on the beach in Saint Barth.

L’endroit, à vous couper le souffle!
Situé sur la plage de Flamands, l’hotel
Saint Barth Isle de France est bien plus
qu’un simple candidat pour le lieu de vos
vacances. Avec ces deux “Charlie” aux
commandes (Vere Nichol et Walker), l’Ile
de France gagne à coup sûr. En effet, une
journée parfaite à Saint Barth pourrait s’y
dérouler du matin au soir. Prenez un mardi
par exemple. Allez-y en milieu de matinée
et dirigez-vous directement vers le spa (il
est conseillé de réserver au préalable!).
Allongez-vous sur la table de massage
chauffée et accordez-vous un moment de
détente totale. Ensuite allez au hammam
et laissez la vapeur évacuer le stress. Enfin
reposé, vous serez prêt pour aller déguster
votre repas, et la rumeur dit que les
meilleures frites de l’île figurent au menu.
Puis il est temps d’aller faire une sieste sur
la plage ou au bord de la piscine, pour un
long après-midi de farniente agrémenté
uniquement de boissons fraîches. Lorsque le
soleil commence à se coucher, dirigez-vous
tranquillement vers la salle de restaurant
pour assister au célèbre défilé de mode,
où les mannequins, toutes plus belles les
unes que les autres, vous présenteront les
derniers modèles de la boutique de l’hôtel.
Vous ne désirerez alors plus partir et votre
seul souhait sera de vous asseoir à une
table pour dîner. Dégustez quelques-uns
des meilleurs mets du chef avec votre vin
préféré, et appelez cette expérience : une
journée. Mais quelle journée!
A jaw-dropping location on the beach
in Flamands makes this hotel more than a
contender. With its two Charlie’s at the helm
(Vere Nichol and Walker), the Isle de France is
a sure winner. In fact, a perfect St Barth day
could be spent from morning to night at the
Isle de France. Take a Tuesday for example.
Get there in mid-morning and go directly to the
spa (reservations are a good idea!). Sink onto
the heated massage table and indulge in total
relaxation. Go to the schvitz and steam away
the stress of your existence. Newly rejuvenated
you’ll be ready for lunch, and rumor has it the
French fries are the best on the island. Then it’s
time for a nap on the beach or by the pool, a
long lazy afternoon punctuated only by a cool
drink. Then as the sun begins to set wander
back to the dining room for the famous fashion
show, as models each one more stunning than
the next display the latest trends from the hotel’s
boutique. By then, you won’t want to leave and
the only sensible thing to do is stroll over to a
table for dinner. Sample a few more of the chef’s
special treats, with your favorite wine, and call
it a day. But what a day!

Privacy abounds at Le Toiny, a boutique hotel
nestled on its own little corner of the island. Each suite is
like a private cottage with its personal pool and terrace
for the ultimate getaway. Classic four-poster beds and

Pays Basque have been adapted to the Caribbean for a

can be ordered to augment any meal. Perhaps the most
popular personality at the hotel is a large yellow lab,
Moritz, referred to as the customer service manager. He is
so adorable that guests have been known to spend hours
on the ground playing with him. If you can tear yourself
away from Moritz, head to the spa where local products
from Ligne Saint Barth wrap you in a frothy cloud of
pineapple, papaya, melon, passion fruit, and mango
extracts. Not for ladies alone, Le Toiny’s special treatments
are for gentlemen as well, with an old-fashioned wet shave
available in an outside setting complete with a relaxing
planter’s chair. Geo. F. Trumper shaving cream, music in
an iPOD, coffee, and ti’punch round out the experience.
That’s the best thing about Le Toiny, surprising little
touches that make for a big experience at a charming little
hotel.

Le mardi, Le Gaïac, le restaurant à ciel ouvert du Toiny
se transforme en marché aux poissons, avec une grande

On Tuesdays, Le Gaïac, the signature open air restaurant at Le Toiny becomes a fish market
of a sort, with a spread of local fish for lunch or dinner. Make your selection and see the
mouth-watering catch of the day grilled before your very eyes. On Sundays, the hotel presents

des nuits parisiennes. Jean-Marie Rivière a
enchanté l’île. Il recevait à La Banane ses
amis célèbres et anonymes avec le même
esprit de fête et de convivialité.

located in Lorient, La Banane is slightly off
the beaten track but well worth the detour.

The late, great French cabaret director JeanMarie Rivière created La Banane as his
special island retreat and named it after his
first revue. For years he presided over the
hotel and produced a late night show that
was fun, saucy, and sexy.

dans les années 50 lorsqu’en 1955, Pierre Jeanneret s’installe à
Chandigarh, capitale du Punjab en Inde, afin de seconder son
cousin Le Corbusier dans l’édification de cette ville nouvelle.

temps. Un mobilier unique qui raconte une histoire, et dont
l’histoire se prolonge ici avec vous.
Today the hotel has a more modern take but the bones of the
original can still be seen. Breathe deeply and smell the jasmine and
the salt air, as you wander through tropical gardens with a spicy
floral bouquet of hibiscus, frangipani, and bougainvillea.
The nine bungalows have been updated with a combination of
traditional and contemporary furnishings for the kind of laid-back
gentility one expects in Saint Barth.
Ask about the names of the bungalows, you’ll get the story of
the hotel’s new designs. Stay in bungalow Pierre and you’ll be
swept back to 1955, when the designer Pierre Jeanneret went
to Chandigarh, capital of Punjab, India, to help his cousin Le
Corbusier build a new city, and at the same time, create innovative
furniture built in rosewood and teak by Indian craftsmen, which
today is very looked after by the biggest art collectors. La Banane
boasts some of these original pieces in an environment where art
and craft create a hotel that feels like home.

Here at the bar, the presence of guests creates a warm and friendly
atmosphere. The most charming evenings are spontaneously
organized and quite often you meet the Island’s personalities. Not so
long ago, a nostalgic Italian countess was singing operettas during
cocktails!
Thursday evenings have become the ‘before diner’ rendez vous on the
island. For the rest of the week, musical evening or Happening is
according to the mood of the day...
